elegant wines that show solid typicity and age-worthy profiles. His 2010s are superb across the board and possess slightly reserved aromatics with firm, pure textures. Downright backwards, especially when compared to his 2009s, they will all benefit from short- term cellaring and, I suspect, these scores will seem a bit low once they flesh out. His 2011s had just been bottled at the time of this tasting, so I opted to review them as barrel samples and give ranges for the scores. They all showed more up-front, perfumed and supple profiles, yet I think they will close down slightly over the coming year as they settle in bottle. Chris believes his 2011s might surpass his 2010s.

"Similarly colored, yet a step up in richness and depth, and certainly not aromatically challenged, the 2010 Champoux Vineyard is a superb blend of 42% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc and 26% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 21 months in barrel, it possesses gorgeous aromas of black raspberry, creme de cassis, dried flowers, spice box and a dusty pebble minerality on the nose. Medium-bodied, elegant and beautifully balanced, with fresh acidity and moderate tannin, it has upside and should round into form with another 2-3 years of bottle age and have over a decade or more of total longevity. Drink 2015-2022."

have everything; texture, richness, balance and structure. Chris continues to think 2007 is his best vintage (we tasted his 2007 Sorrella during the visit and it’s an incredible wine) to date, and he describes 2012 as a “bigger 2008.” Nevertheless, I think these 2012s will rival the 2007s in another 4-5 years. In addition, they have a new vineyard near Two Blondes called Pollard Vineyard that’s planted to Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. I visited earlier this year and the 2013s had not been put together, so I’ll review those (possibly from barrel) next year. These are great wines."

"A wine that I think rivals the 2007 Sorella, the 2012 Sorella comes all from the Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA and is made from 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc. Aged 18 months in 35% new French oak, it has smoking notes of blackcurrants, black raspberry, toasted bread and spice-box to go with a full-bodied, awesomely concentration, yet layered, balanced profile on the palate. There’s a lot of tannin here, so short-term cellaring is advised. This beauty will have 2-3 decades of longevity and will stand toe-to-toe with some of the greatest Bordeaux blends out there."

and low rainfall (about 6-8" annually) translates to excellent flavor concentration. The vineyard's latitude and south- and north-facing orientations help vines soak up more than 17 hours of sunshine per day at the peak of summer, resulting in rich, fully mature flavors and supple tannins.

Canoe Ridge's "The Expedition" lineup of wines was inspired by explorers Lewis & Clark. The mindset here was to explore the possibilities of blending some of the extra wine after crafting their flagship wines. Now, while we taste hundreds of "value" wines during the course of the year, there are very few that standout as having high quality to price rations. When we tasted these Expedition wines, we had to do a double take with the vendor; these wines absolutely rocked! The Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon were the stars of the show, and we had to immediately bring them in and share this find with our customers!

Light gold / butterscotch in color, this wine has a rich nose of lemon cream, butter, and philo dough. Flavors of roasted nuts, citrus, lemon curd, butter, and a tough of oak greet you upon entry. Rich and expressive on the palate, this wine has weight, yet still retains mouth-watering acidity to keep things fresh and lively. This really taste like it should cost more…but don't tell the winery!

This is not a case of deja vu. If you follow our newsletter, you may recall that a Columbia Crest wine was our wine of the month last year at this time (the ‘09 H3 Cab, to be precise). Read More...
This year, their red blend “Les Chevaux” (French for ‘the horses’) hit the home stretch well ahead of the dozen other worthy wines to take the purse.

Chevaux is a blend comprised of 80% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Syrah. Winemaker Juan Muñoz Oca was raised in Mendoza, Argentina and worked with his grandfather, cellar master at Bodegas Toso winery, at a young age. Juan joined Columbia Crest in 2003 and was named head winemaker in 2011. Prior to 2011 he was dedicated to the winery’s red wine program where he worked alongside Ray Einberger whose 2005 Reserve Cab became the first Washington wine to be named ‘Wine of the Year’ by Wine Spectator in 2009. Why Columbia Crest? Oca states: “The perfect grape-growing climate, the best viticultural practices, and a people committed to crafting the best bottle of wine vintage after vintage is what Columbia Crest’s winemaking is all about.”

The nose starts with Christmas spices, vanilla and cardamom, then adds a layer of cherry/plum/pomegranate reduction; a very attractive, inviting nose. The palate leads off with sweet cherry fruit and forward tannins as baking spices, Kriek lambic flavors and dark cocoa notes add depth and balance. The finish is lengthy and tasty as the big tannins slowly recede, leaving reverberations of red fruits, spice and a mineral earthiness to meander around the mouth for a few minutes more.

- "Supple and spicy, with a plush-textured, dark-hued, blackberry-rich mouthful lingering against creamy oak notes on the long and polished finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Drink now through 2018."

is composed of shallow Scoon silt loam soil, formed in loess, underlain by basalt. The fruit has a Meyer lemon highlight. The upper vines grow on a steep (15%-30%) side hill facing northwest at 1280 feet elevation, with two soil types. The shallow Scoon silt loam soil predominates. But there is an area of Burke silt loam soil, moderately deep and well drained on a 12% slope. These grapes have a pineapple, tropical fruit note that is very distinctive.

The resulting wine is an interplay between the two sites, showing an enticing array of ripe pear, lemon crème, orange blossom, marzipan, and butterscotch are accompanied by rich creamy texture and vibrant acidity. Only 225 cases were produced!

and 35% Semillon that barrel fermented, it sports a light gold color to go with a sweet bouquet of buttered citrus, crushed rock, white flowers and toasted almond. One of the few serious white Bordeaux blends being made in the US, this medium to full-bodied beauty has a core of sweet fruit, integrated acidity, sensational purity and dry, clean finish. While I suspect it will age just fine, I see no reason to delay gratification and would drink bottles over the coming couple of years."

In the 1990's Washington State's winemaking trends had clearly shifted to Bordeaux varietals, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc. In 1992, Delille Cellars started with 2 wines, both blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. In 1995, the same philosophy contributed to the creation of the Chaleur Estate Blanc, a Bordeaux style white wine blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Since that time, the lofty scores and high praise for the Delille wines have come through year after year. This year's release of their Sauvignon Blanc-blend may be the best yet off their vineyards in Washington's Columbia Valley.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Washington, Chris Upchurch began his career as a wine merchant, working with several of Seattle's best-known restaurants. This experience allowed him to hone his palate while tasting wines from around the world. Chris then developed a successful grape-brokerage business contracting grapes from Washington State and selling them to winemakers. Chris uncovered his true calling once he started spending endless hours in the vineyards. That love of the land, the vine and its fruit, fostered Chris' passion of winemaking and his passion for charting a course in Washington State.

An acclaimed professional winemaker for over twenty years, Chris still spends much of his time in the vineyards of Washington State, primarily Yakima Valley and Red Mountain AVA's. Reflecting on the great European winemaking tradition, he remarks, "The truly long-lived wines are made in the vineyards. I expect to be here for many years to come."

While the dense chewy tannins dominate initially, this racy core of acidity shines forth after some heavy decanting / air time. This wine begs for fat either in the form of a nice marbled rib eye or cheese. Delicious! While patience and another year or 2 in the bottle is recommended, if you want to drink now, as mentioned, enjoy it with dinner!

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 94-96 POINTS - "Chris Figgins and Drew Bledsoe continue to release a blockbuster Cabernet under their Doubleback label."

Given the texture and concentration, it should drink reasonably well on release, yet evolve for two decades."
