and 7% Petit Verdot – offers a terrific example of the combination of richness and textural polish with lift and energy that Washington State vineyards, and especially this one, can supply. Both blond and smoky Latakia tobaccos join black raspberry, purple plum and cassis, which are shadowed by their high-toned distilled essences. Hints of vanilla and nutmeg – perhaps from barrel (ca. 40% new); or perhaps part and parcel of Champoux fruit – are subtly complementary, while a saline savor grows in this beauty’s long finish, stimulating the salivary glands as well as the urge to take another sip. Expect this to excel for a decade. Camarda bottled his first Champoux vineyard designate from 1999, a pure Cabernet. Once fruit from the other cepages became available, he began bottling a blend of them all."

and low rainfall (about 6-8" annually) translates to excellent flavor concentration. The vineyard's latitude and south- and north-facing orientations help vines soak up more than 17 hours of sunshine per day at the peak of summer, resulting in rich, fully mature flavors and supple tannins.

Canoe Ridge's "The Expedition" lineup of wines was inspired by explorers Lewis & Clark. The mindset here was to explore the possibilities of blending some of the extra wine after crafting their flagship wines. Now, while we taste hundreds of "value" wines during the course of the year, there are very few that standout as having high quality to price rations. When we tasted these Expedition wines, we had to do a double take with the vendor; these wines absolutely rocked! The Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon were the stars of the show, and we had to immediately bring them in and share this find with our customers!

Light gold / butterscotch in color, this wine has a rich nose of lemon cream, butter, and philo dough. Flavors of roasted nuts, citrus, lemon curd, butter, and a tough of oak greet you upon entry. Rich and expressive on the palate, this wine has weight, yet still retains mouth-watering acidity to keep things fresh and lively. This really taste like it should cost more…but don't tell the winery!

With a strong, dark garnet color, this Cabernet has an enticing nose of currants, raspberries, vanilla, sweet oak, and violets. Balanced and fresh on the palate, fresh red berries, cherries, compote, and smoky plum wrap around the palate. This is a complex, yet very easy drinking Cabernet with polished tannins that creep up on the velvety finish

We've long been fans of Columbia Crest, one of Washington State's premiere wineries, known for both handcrafted, superior-quality small-lot wines and affordable, everyday Washington quaffers. Read More...
So where does "H3" fall? Well, the price says everyday and affordable but, we must confess, the juice in the bottle has us leaning toward the superior side of the above descriptor-- it's a fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon that we believe people will fall in love with, especially as a "go to" Cab for the holidays.

The nose is a nice blend of sweet brown spices, black cherry, a little cherry cola and a touch of vanilla-- very approachable. The palate keeps with the cherry fruit theme and adds a touch of cedar and subtle dusty earth, all lifted by a nice layer of acidity. The finish is brief but tasty. With a latitude similar to Bordeaux, and long days of sunshine leading to excellent ripeness of fruit, clearly it's not just the horses who've found heaven in the hills of Washington.

This is not a case of deja vu. If you follow our newsletter, you may recall that a Columbia Crest wine was our wine of the month last year at this time (the ‘09 H3 Cab, to be precise). Read More...
This year, their red blend “Les Chevaux” (French for ‘the horses’) hit the home stretch well ahead of the dozen other worthy wines to take the purse.

Chevaux is a blend comprised of 80% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Syrah. Winemaker Juan Muńoz Oca was raised in Mendoza, Argentina and worked with his grandfather, cellar master at Bodegas Toso winery, at a young age. Juan joined Columbia Crest in 2003 and was named head winemaker in 2011. Prior to 2011 he was dedicated to the winery’s red wine program where he worked alongside Ray Einberger whose 2005 Reserve Cab became the first Washington wine to be named ‘Wine of the Year’ by Wine Spectator in 2009. Why Columbia Crest? Oca states: “The perfect grape-growing climate, the best viticultural practices, and a people committed to crafting the best bottle of wine vintage after vintage is what Columbia Crest’s winemaking is all about.”

The nose starts with Christmas spices, vanilla and cardamom, then adds a layer of cherry/plum/pomegranate reduction; a very attractive, inviting nose. The palate leads off with sweet cherry fruit and forward tannins as baking spices, Kriek lambic flavors and dark cocoa notes add depth and balance. The finish is lengthy and tasty as the big tannins slowly recede, leaving reverberations of red fruits, spice and a mineral earthiness to meander around the mouth for a few minutes more.

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "Supple and spicy, with a plush-textured, dark-hued, blackberry-rich mouthful lingering against creamy oak notes on the long and polished finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Drink now through 2017."

the inaugural release of FIGGINS perfectly exemplifies the brilliance of this vintage from the Walla Walla Valley. The wine has loads of bright raspberry, blueberry, red apple cider, Grand Marnier, tobacco and sage with further notes of cassis, red fruits, blackberries, currants, fruit tree flowers and a slight hint of cedar shavings. On the palate the wine has a remarkable freshness and excellent length highlighted by super fine-grained, silky tannins. Having a core of precise “just ripe fruit” the wine has power but emphasizes restraint, elegance and balance.

ROBERT M. PARKER, JR.'S THE WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS
"The 2008 Figgins Estate Red Wine is the inaugural release of a wine made by Chris Figgins, son of Leonetti Cellar founder, Gary Figgins. The fruit was sourced from the Figgins Estate Vineyard which is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Merlot. The wine was aged in 70% new French oak for 22 months before bottling without fining or filtration. A total of 831 cases were produced. Sandalwood, exotic spices, sage, cherry blossom, cassis, and blackberry aromas inform the nose of a dense, rich, elegant, beautifully proportioned wine that has enough ripe, fine-grained tannin to blossom for another 4-5 years. It offers a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2023, perhaps longer. All in all, not a bad debut."

This fruit comes from an experimental block at Northridge where 3/4ths of the block was grafted from Phelps to equal parts clones 470, 174 and 383 – all top end Rhone clones from Superior. Read More...
We source the entire block and farm less than 2 tons per acre. The Rhone stems lignify earlier so we use 100% stems on the bottom of the fermenters and layer them with the de-stemmed Phelps clone on the top. The wine is of course native yeast fermented, then spends 27 months in barrel – a mix of two 500 Liter Puncheons and 11 French Rhone barrels.

This is the inaugural release of “The Hidden” Syrah. This co-ferment of four Syarh clones makes for one complex wine. 27 months in barrels and raring to go. It is gamey, bloody (think fresh meat) and has forest floor, anise and sassafras. If that is not enough, all of that is enclosed in a skin of wild blackberry. This wine is powerful and will age forever. Totally Killer!

profile of aptly named Stoneridge. The vineyard is a mix of Malaga, silt, loam and big rocks of fractured basalt and caliche. It is a warm site with good air drainage and lots of wind. This windy site has naturally reduced yields and limited vigor encouraging robust, yet supple tannins that add to the aging potential to the wine. The thick-skinned fruit produces intense color and wild aromatics.

Aromas of a old leather bound book. Smooth and satisfying, red and black currant, cedar, tobacco, sweet espresso and oh so subtle spice. Sit back and enjoy this classic.
