We haven't published a newsletter in about a year and haven't printed one in two years... so what gives? We have always enjoyed the crazy busy holiday season as it's a great time to enjoy a glass of wine with the right meal, family and friends, as we reflect upon the year at hand and dream about the next one. It's a time of giving gifts and thanking folks for what they do and who they are. It's a time for us to highlight the best we have to offer-- it's our goal to make your holidays even better, to help accentuate this special time. Bibi Graetz is an innovative thinker, artist and winemaker born of Italian and Norwegian parents who started Testamatta (meaning “hot head” in Italian) just outside of Florence. At the time, his family faced the possibility of losing lease contracts on some untended old Sangiovese vines that surround his home. Bibi saw an artistic opportunity and rehabilitated the vineyard. The rest is history and Testamatta is now regarded as one of Italy’s greatest wines crafted using 100% Sangiovese in new French oak. This stunning Super-Tuscan is a pure expression of Tuscany’s signature grape and a must-have for Italian wine lovers and collectors. It is approachable now with decanting, but very capable of aging. The beautiful label was personally designed by Bibi Graetz.

San Filippo is a small producer known for its high-quality Brunello’s. The estate totals has only 25 acres under vine and “Le Lucére” is a vineyard selection from the highest plots at San Filippo. After spending two years in French barrique it undergoes a small amount of additional aging at the estate before release. “Le Lucére” is intense, complex and very capable of aging.

It's full-bodied, with an incredible depth of fruit and a savory, salty, almost grilled meat character. Layers and layers of fruit and tannins. A truly great wine. Better in 2020."

WINE ADVOCATE 96 POINTS - "Aged two years in oak, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucére is expressive and deep with thick lines and a profound sense of extraction. This is a lovely wine that occupies a special place on the opulent side of the Brunello spectrum. Of course, the amazing quality of fruit in 2010 has given winemakers more variables and raw material to play with. The wine shows dark concentration and an impenetrable appearance. Dried fruit, clove, nutmeg and toasted almond segue to cola, licorice and pressed rose petal. The mouthfeel is sweet and chewy but the overall effect is spectacular. This wine marks a huge improvement over past efforts."

We are spellbound by the complexity of this perfectly aged wine from the historic Benanti family estate. This cuvee is composed primarily of Nerello Mascalese with a small amount of Nerello Cappuccio. Think of a hypothetical cross of Burgundian Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo, which is vibrant and fresh at 11 years of age. This wine is balanced, full of character and drinking beautifully right now. As Salvino Benanti says, "These are elegant wines for elegant food and elegant people." We agree wholeheartedly! This tremendous food wine, pairs exceptionally well with lamb, pork dishes, sausage or even pizza!

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "Benanti's 2004 Serra della Contessa is a showstopper. This blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio is made from 100-year old vines, many of which date to pre-phylloxera times. The wine is fermented in oak vats, then racked into French oak barrels for aging. It reveals notable intensity and purity in its expressive layers of ripe fruit, leather, minerals, menthol, licorice and smoke. Supple, finessed tannins frame the gorgeous finish. Today the wine is quite primary but in time it will likely develop into an ethereal beauty. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016."

The Ciacci Piccolomini D’Aragona is one of our most popular Brunello’s of the year. At our first Brunello tasting earlier this year, the “normal” Brunello bottling was a customer favorite and is without a doubt the best ever produced by Ciacci Piccolomini. It is showy and more approachable than many of the Brunello’s we’ve tasted and is already displaying the complexity that makes Brunello so famous. From the epic 2010 vintage, this wine displays terrific precision, balance and complexity. Furthermore it offers outstanding value.

The bouquet is buoyant and bright with lingering tones of smoke, ash, balsam, herb, licorice and soy sauce. Those kinds of aromas make Brunello such a wonderful wine and thankfully you get them in abundance here. Dry mineral and brimstone also give the wine a sense of focus, sharpness and cleanliness that is very appealing. The close is long, fine and polished. I look forward to retasting this bottle five years from now."

Produttori del Barbaresco always offers one of the most exciting tastings of the year. This cooperative winery decided not to make single-vineyard expressions in 2010 and all the fruit went into the base 2010 Barbaresco instead. This is an approachable Barbaresco with fine-grained tannins opening the door to enjoy the characteristic complexity Nebbiolo is known for. An outstanding value!

WINE ADVOCATE 93+ POINTS - "The 2010 Barabresco opens to beautiful aromas of forest floor, white truffle and cola. All the fruit from Produttori del Barbaresco's single-vineyard wines are packed into this one base Barbaresco. The wine is sharp and focused and, although it does not have the soft generosity of 2009 or 2011, this is a wine of enormous elegance. I did not find the mouthfeel to be exceedingly thin. In fact, I noted the persistence, freshness and liveliness of the finish.

Rosso’s from Montalcino are, in essence, “baby” Brunellos.” If you’ve always been enamored with wine from Montalcino, Uccelliera has to be one of the benchmarks. The wine is 100% Sangiovese, but it is a different clone than what is used in Chianti. This is a wine that has more of everything with more breadth and amplification when compared to Chianti Classico. Uccelliera’s Rosso di Montalcino is fresh, rich, and powerful, but being a Rosso di Montalcino, it’s just plain easy to drink!

The 2013 Rosso di Montalcino opens to easy fruit intensity and sharp mineral tones of brimstone and pencil shaving that you note immediately. Those dusty tones slowly turn to bright cherry, licorice and cola. Rosso di Montalcino is one of Italy's most food-friendly wines (think pasta, grilled sausage and lasagna) and this wine is a good example of why. Fresh acidity and easy tannins offer a smooth and informal drinking experience.

How do they pack so much flavor into such an affordable bottle of wine?! This is one of the more remarkable values coming out of Italy. This lively, juicy red wine comes from the rugged Abruzzi hills above the Adriatic coast of central Italy. Bursting with considerable fruit, floral and earth flavors, this is a wine of surprising depth. It is a terrific wine to pair with meat, hearty tomato-based pasta dishes or on its own. An amazing value!

Deep ruby with purple highlights. Aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plums, purple flowers and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with velvety tannins. Deep and penetrating dark fruit flavors mingle with olive while warm potpourri envelops the senses. The wine has a pleasant organic earthiness.

Top Spanish Wines of 2015


Aged Rioja just doesn’t get much better than this! From one of the original and most historic wineries in Spain’s famous wine-producing region, La Rioja Alta knocked it out of the park with their excellent 2001 vintage. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate practically gushes about this wine, calling it “otherworldly.” Amazingly, this is a current release as Rioja Alta determined it is entering the perfect window for drinking. We wholeheartedly agree and note this wine also has the ability to age gracefully in a cool cellar for many more years. Absolutely delicious!

WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "2001 is a great vintage for all the wines from La Rioja Alta but the long-awaited 2001 Gran Reserva 890 is otherworldly. 2001 was a slow maturing vintage which produced smaller grapes especially in the old vineyards on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria in the villages of Brinas, Labastida and Villalba where the vineyards that make it into this wine are located. The final blend contains a majority of Tempranillo with 3% Graciano and 2% Mazuelo. The wine ferments with the natural yeasts attached to the grapes in stainless steel vats and is aged for six years in used American oak barrels with 12 manual rackings. A selection of the best barrels were blended together and bottled unfiltered in March 2008. Only 15,000 bottles were produced. It shows (even) younger and more concentrated than the 2004 904, a darker shade of red and a somehow backward and reticent nose (relatively speaking) of forest floor, cold bonfire, antique shop, truffles, game, sandalwood, nutmeg and clove. The fruit is also a little darker and the palate more austere, but still showing vibrant and supple, with clean flavors and a great finish. This is my favorite modern time 890. Bravo!"

The Bodegas Roda winery is "most modern of the traditionalists and most traditional of the modernists." What this means is Roda honors the historical legacy of Rioja while introducing updated production methods. The result is a delicious expression of Riojan wine showing rich fruit and beautiful floral spice. It is raised in French oak (as opposed to the American oak used by most winemakers in Rioja) and is crafted to be a little bigger and bolder while remaining balanced and elegant. Bodegas Roda was recognized as one of the 100 best wineries in the world by Wine & Spirits Magazine, a distinction only given to 5 Spanish wineries.

Deep purple with a ruby rim. Ripe dark fruits predominate including black raspberry and black cherries. The oak influence adds notions of spice box, bay leaf, tobacco, vanilla and cocoa. With aeration, a savory component emerges offering a glimpse of things to come. Dense and voluminous on the full-bodied palate with present, but well-integrated subtle tannins. Layers of pure, ripe black fruit, such as blackberry, black cherry and blue plums are enhanced by notions of baking spices. Very nicely balanced with a persistent finish.

ANTONIO GALLONI 94 POINTS - "(50% new oak) Deep ruby. Sexy, high-pitched aromas of black raspberry, cherry-cola, Asian spices and sassafras, with slow-mounting minerality. Juicy, sharply focused red fruit flavors show an alluring sweetness and pick up notes of allspice and candied rose with air. Sweeter still on the finish, which is smooth, sappy and extremely long. This will be a beauty in a few years but it's actually very easy to drink now."

From the owners of Vega Sicilia, the most iconic winery in all of Spain comes the 2010 Pintia. The Alvarez family's hugely successful Toro project benefits from Vega Sicilia’s talented winemaking team. It also benefits from an environment, which is harsher than Ribera del Duero. The tougher conditions produce Tempranillo of immense concentration and depth of flavor. Pintia is made with the same exacting care as Vega Sicilia’s Unico, which sells for more than $300.00 per bottle. Fortunately, Pintia is available for a fraction of that price, making it a bargain for a wine of such pedigree. For those who love powerful and captivating wines with impeccable balance, this is a no brainer.

WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "The 2010 Pintia had already been bottled when I tasted it, although not released. The bouquet is very Bordeaux-like with black rather than red fruit, fine minerality and touches of graphite and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with plump, rounded tannins, a firm structure and great precision on the finish. This is what you might call a "classic" Pintia that already demonstrates great breeding and sophistication toward the finish."

Prado Enea from Muga continues to impress with its amazing depth and complexity and is only produced in years when Muga feels the quality level is high enough to merit its release. In fact, there will be no Prado Enea released for the 2007 or 2008 vintages. For Muga lovers, this is one to stock up on while it is available. This wine sets itself apart with its combination of deep fruit flavors and secondary aromas gained from extensive oak aging. This is a gorgeous bottle of wine.

WINE ADVOCATE 96 POINTS - "The 2006 Prado Enea is a phenomenal bottle of traditional Rioja at its best. A blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and the remaining 10% Mazuelo and Graciano aged for a long time in oak and bottled before release. This is a practice quite common from yesteryear, but that is a true rarity today. The grapes are sourced from higher-altitude terraced plots where the climate is cooler and drier and the soils are rich in clay. This is a wine that is not automatically produced every year. The wine spends its elevage in oak containers of different size, origin and age for no less than three years. The nose is intoxicating with a superb mixture of tertiary and more primary aromas like old furniture, cloves, cracked pepper, incense and cigar ash plus cherries in liqueur (that Garnacha!). The palate is medium-bodied, with great freshness acidity and balance, with a silky texture, ultra-fine tannins and great persistence and length. This wine feels younger than it is, and seems to be aging at a glacial pace. With the stuffing and balance it has this should make very old bones, and drink greatly throughout its life. Superb! At this quality level the price seems like a bargain. “

Pago de los Capellanes is one of our favorite Spanish wines and we have proudly carried it at Hi-Time for many years. Nestled deep in the heart of the Ribera del Duero region, “Pago’s” vineyards only grow Tinto Fino or Tempranillo grapes, the variety indigenous to the region. “Pago de los Capellanes” (Land of the Chaplains) is named in honor of the clergy who were stewards of the property for centuries. This wine continues to impress, delivering outstanding quality and value. Tempranillo grapes are hand-harvested and aged in new French oak barrels (1 to 3 years) until they reach optimal maturity for blending. The result is a bouquet with fine complexity and ripened fruit, especially cherries, blue berries and black currants, which are in harmony with wood, spices (vanilla and coconut) and a liquorice undertone. The wine displays great balance with the fruit, acidity and mature tannins showing great harmony.

The Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva is an amazingly complex wine produced only in years when the quality of the grapes is very high and supports the lengthy aging process required by the Gran Reserva designation. Wine critics hailed the 2005 vintage as one of the great vintages of the last decade in Rioja. The El Coto winery has enjoyed great success in Europe and is just now being brought into the United States in very limited quantities. In fact, only 120 cases of this wine were imported into this country!

Medium ruby fading to a garnet edge. The nose is very complex, showing dried red fruit, cigar box, forest floor, earth and herbs. The palate is refined and the tannins are resolved and silky. Nice acidity brightens the character of the fruit. Cherry, pomegranate and red currants predominate with additional notes of cedar, tobacco and leather. This 100% Tempranillo-based wine is exceptionally balanced with the smooth drinkability gained from 24 months of aging in American oak and 36 months in bottle prior to release.

WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "Focused and vibrant, this traditional red delivers bright flavors of dried cherry, tobacco, orange peel and spice. Light tannins and citrusy acidity keep this lively. Though the flavors are maturing, the wine remains fresh. Drink now through 2020."

Legendary Australian Winemaker Chris Ringland and partner Jorge Ordonez have set out to make explosive, rarified bottlings twice before, with Alto Moncayo & El Nido “Clio.” Triga is the newest of these partnerships with grapes sourced in Alicante, Spain. The blend is very similar to the early bottlings of El Nido “Clio” and is made primarily from low-yielding Monastrell (aka Mourvedre) with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon added to the blend.

Triga is the hedonistic luscious masterpiece that fans of Alto Moncayo and El Nido “Clio” would expect. Look for an inky, purple black color; ripe blueberry and liqueur-like blackberry fruit complimented by a range of exotic spices. Triga overflows with richness and power, but the vineyard sits on a mountain of fossilized chalk. This limestone influence shows with added minerality and a vibrant, red currant-like raciness underlying the fruit.

ANTONIO GALLONI 93 POINTS - "Inky ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes fresh black and blue fruits, incense, potpourri, and five spice powder. Stains the palate with intense boysenberry and cherry compote flavors, given spine and lift by a zesty mineral nuance. Densely packed yet lithe, finishing with outstanding thrust and smooth tannins that build slowly."

Cune has been a long time staff and customer favorite from Rioja. Over the years we have had the privilege of tasting their Gran Reservas as far back as the 50’s. Our reactions are always the same, we ooh and awe, treasuring every sip. Cune is one of the most renowned and historic bodegas in all of Spain. Founded in 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers, the company has been an integral part of Rioja’s ascendance in the world of fine wine. The company is still run by descendants of the Real de Asúa brothers and remains a constant in the cultural iconography of Spain. Their combination of traditional roots and innovative vision, has made them one of Rioja’s most reliable sources for high quality wine.

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "Going one step up in the quality ladder, the Viña Real 2010 Reserva plays with the advantage of being cropped from a quite balanced, fresh vintage, a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alavesa fermented in stainless steel and matured in barrel for 22 months, during which time it was racked every four months. This wine has all the classical aromas of an old time Rioja, cherries, vanilla, some coconut, dill, leather, cured meat, incense, old furniture and cold bonfire. The palate is medium-bodied and very balanced with great acidity and fine tannins that make it easy to drink. Pop or keep. It has good freshness, and with time in the glass it develops beautiful aromas of orange peel that transmit very good freshness."

"Considered by many observers to be the finest estate in Jumilla, Casa Castillo is a treasure-trove for fabulous values, particularly from the Monastrell (Mourvedre) grape that loves the chalky terroirs and cool slopes of the Sierra del Molar." – Robert Parker

Casa Castillo began as a rosemary plantation but has evolved into the preeminent estate in the DO of Jumilla. The property has old vines growing in chalk soils covered with stones, which were planted by the French fleeing the phyloxera epidemic. These national treasures produce bold and layered wines at an unbelievable value. This year’s wine contains the fruit from the highly prized (and priced) Pie Franco, which was not produced in this vintage. A blend of 70% Monastrell with 15% Syrah and 15% Garnacha.

WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "2012 could be the finest vintage to date, as there was no 2012 Pie Franco, as quantities were really short and those grapes are in this blend. It starts off with some notes of smoke, toffee, fresh fruit and orange peel in harmony with well-integrated oak and a stony profile that develops more and more notes of esparto grass with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, with some polished, very fine tannins and a good mid-palate that is very balanced and fresh (I saw a note of pomegranate, is it the Garnacha?). It is a serious, very young wine with ripe flavors that make it very tasty. This is clearly riper than the 2013s and shows the character of the vintage quite transparently. The price is a dream come true. Super!"

It is an exciting time for Spanish winemaking and particularly for the Priorat region which continues its evolution as a producer of thrilling red wines. One of the great names associated with winemaking in Spain is Juan Gil, maker of the hugely popular Clio and El Nido wines, which sell out quickly once we get them in the store. Bluegray is Gil’s new project in Priorat, which is a blend of 45% Grenache, 30% Mazuelo (Carignan) and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is lush and powerful, yet artfully balanced with pure fruit flavors augmented by minerality imparted by the soils. It is made in a ripe, fruit-forward style which seems tailor-made for the American palate.

Deep ruby with heavy staining of the tears, the nose shows focused ripe black fruit and cherry flavors accented by fresh autumn spices, mineral and spicy notes. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied with very smooth tannins. The fresh fruit flavors on display include blackberry, cherry, currant and blue plums. This shows good balance and drinkability with a long, lingering finish. Enjoy on its own or with grilled and roasted beef, aged cheeses and hearty dishes.

The blend changes with each vintage and in 2010 they had very good Petit Verdot so the percentage of it is higher than ever. It's a blend of 60% Malbec and 20% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The wine shows great integration of the oak, with notes of blackcurrant and spices (black pepper), showing restraint and incipient elegance along with underbrush and hints of truffles. I think I've never seen such an elegant Cheval des Andes. The palate reveals very good balance between power and elegance with ripe, fine-grained tannins, good length and freshness. This wine is a dead-ringer for a very high-quality California Chardonnay. Sourced from the remote upper reaches of Argentina’s Uco Valley on the eastern slopes of the Andes, Bodegas Salentein produces this remarkable single vineyard Chardonnay from a vineyard planted at some of the highest elevations on the planet. The grapes were hand-picked at optimum ripeness with only the top grapes making it into this bottling. The wine was fermented in French oak barrels, undergoing malolactic fermentation and aged for 10 months on the lees. We were wowed by El Enemigo. This is a bold and powerful Malbec blend from Argentina, made in collaboration with Alejandro Vigil, head winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata and Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicholas Catena, who is continuing in her family’s legacy of winemaking. The 2012 El Enemigo is a blend of 93% Malbec and 7% Petit Verdot sourced from vineyards in the Uco Valley of Mendoza. This is a voluptuous, full-bodied wine with a color such a deep purple, it paints the glass. Wafting up are aromas of blackberries, red licorice and brandied cherries, followed by more blackberry, clove, black pepper and cola on the palate. The finish is long with gentle, soft tannins.

Heytesbury is a blend of the best barrels from the best batches of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon and small parcels of Petit Verdot and Malbec. The Margaret River Wine Region is positioned on a cape that is surrounded by ocean on three sides in the south-west corner of Australia. The Henschke family has been making wine since Johann Christian Henschke planted a small vineyard at Keyneton in 1862. Each generation built upon the foundations of Henschke and brought new ideas and ongoing success. The Henschke family also pioneered single-vineyard wines in Australia with the Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone wines. These captured the wine world’s imagination and continue to be highly sought after premium wines. Hi Time Wine Cellars is excited to introduce Mount Michael Wines to the United States for the first time after being a treasured vineyard in Central Otago, New Zealand for over a decade. This beautiful vineyard is located just 100 meters from the 45th parallel –that mysterious line which circles the globe and marks the halfway point between the equator and the South Pole. The climate is ferocious, with extremes of hot and cold. This makes for perfect conditions for growing pinot noir grapes.

The grapes for this wine were hand-picked from a single vineyard. Fermentation was very traditional- open topped tanks, hand plunged, indigenous yeasts and a portion of whole bunch included in each fermenter. Gentle pressing, combined with maturation in French oak barriques (50% new) for 12 months has resulted in a beautifully balanced and elegant wine.

Deep violet in color. Aromas of black fruits, baked cherries and wild thyme. On the palate, this wine shows surprising power, packed with deep voluptuous dark berries with a slightly savory back palate. The Bourgeois family was on a worldwide search for a new slice of terroir, similar to their own in Sancerre in the Loire Valley of France. After a 12-year exploration, the Bourgeois family found a 98 hectare plot in Marlborough where ultra-premium Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir could be grown. Their first grapevines were planted in 2001 and with much hard work and meticulous management and planning, they started producing wines of stellar quality-- like this one.

In the French tradition, the vineyard is planted in high density to encourage competition between vines and restrain vigor. This natural vigor control means the vines put more energy into the grapes, rather than the canopy, which concentrates the berries. Dry farming (using no irrigation) also helps keep vigor under control. By stressing the vines to just the right level, it forces the roots to go deeper in the soil, thereby getting the purest expression of terroir and showing more minerality from the river stone soil.

The nose is resplendent with stone fruits and spring blossoms dancing amid well water, flint and mineral scents. The palate is viscous and rich, yet tempered by good acidity, as a mélange of mixed stone and tropical fruits (pear, white peach, lichee, lime) lead to a mid-palate of rich, brown spices and mineral water. Mixed fruits flourish in the crisp, fresh finish. Think fruits of the sea (richer fish, shellfish) or your favorite 'bigger' cheeses with this one.

WINE ENTHUSIAST 91 POINTS - "A French-owned outpost in the South Pacific, Clos Henri seems to be finally coming of age. This entry-level offering delivers a hint of smoky, fumé character, but also plenty of ripe fruit, ranging from fig, melon and stone fruit to zestier notes of passion fruit. The Spice Route Winery's name recalls the ancient mariners plying their trade in bringing exotic Eastern spices to Western Europe along the so-called 'Spice Route'. In much the same way Charles Back sailed into largely uncharted waters to realize the viticultural potential of the Swartland wine region. His venture's name is equally evocative of the style of wines being made: rich, complex yet infinitely enjoyable, with ripe fruit of the finest quality skillfully enhanced through careful oaking.

"Chakalaka" is a blend of many grapes: 29% Syrah, 29% Mourvedre, 13% Grenache, 13% Carignan, 8% Tannat and 8% Petite Syrah. The beauty in a field-blend style of wine like this is when the sum of the parts create something more harmonious and beautiful than the individual grapes could attain solo. South African Rhône? Maybe so-- and certainly delicious.

The nose is filled with jammy, spicy fruit, dark raspberries and blackberries, as brown spices, fresh tilled earth and stony scents add complexity. Great viscosity in the mouth, a basketful of fruits, a mix of red, blue and black berries and cherries, are balanced with a layer of acidity and silky tannins. The easy, rich fruits are balanced with spices, vanilla bean and clove, subtle earthiness and black tea in the background. This is not a heavy wine but, like the spice traders of yore, it's certainly rich and impeccably balanced between sweet fruit, pungent spices and solid earth.

Top German Wines of 2015


Winemaker Klaus Peter Keller in Rheinhessen produces some of the most revered dry wines in Germany. The dry Riesling he makes, known as "G-Max", comes from 50-60-year-old vines in Keller's Grand Cru vineyards, and is the single most expensive bottling of dry Riesling on release, fetching onwards of $600 and up (if you can find it). Renowned British wine critic Jancis Robinson states, "If I had to choose one wine to show how great dry German Riesling can be I would choose a Keller Riesling. These wines are the German Montrachets."

Unbeknownst to many though, is Keller's Von der Fels (meaning literally "from the rocks"), a dry Riesling made from a blend of young vines (10-25 years old) from the Grand Cru sites of Hubacker, Absterde, Morstein and Kirchspiel, macerated on the skins for 12 hours and fermented in big old oak and stainless steel, and costing only a fraction of Keller's single vineyard wines. Von der Fels is one of the best values in elite dry Riesling that brings together the three main components of Riesling (fruit, minerality and acidity) focused with purely elegant fruit, a serious rocky minerality, and precise length.

JOHN GILMAN VIEW FROM THE CELLAR  92+ POINTS - "Year in and year out, I am a huge fan of the von der Fels bottling and the 2014 vintage is another outstanding wine in the making. This is a touch fuller than the straight Riesling Trocken, coming in at twelve percent alcohol, and perhaps a bit more ageworthy as well. The excellent nose wafts from the glass in a mix of pink grapefruit, tangerine, petrol, a stunningly complex base of minerality, lemongrass and a topnote of orange peel. On the palate the wine is fullbodied, pure and very much defined by its complex soil tones, with a rock solid core, outstanding focus and grip and a very long, youthful and bouncy finish. It is lovely juicy and sweet, but also very elegant, and a nothing but lovely type of Kabinett, although FlorIan Lauer does not want to name it like this because predicates are used only for sweet wines. Since Florian Lauer was nearly out of stock with his 2013s, he poured me tank samples of 2014, which are ready to be bottled and shipped very soon. As many of his colleagues, he is very happy with the quality of 2014 whose wines offer significantly ripe, golden-yellow Riesling aromas whereas in 2013 citrus fruit and apple aromas were the Leitmotiv."

The Mülheimer Sonnenlay is the largest single vineyard in the Max Ferd. Richter estate. The ‘Sonnenlay’ (sunshine and slate) is situated in a valley adjacent south to the river. Up to the last ice age that was the original bed of the Mosel river. The Sonnenlay mountain is facing west - south west. This specific wine originates from the part called "Johannisberg", presenting the best part of the mountain.

This 2002 Riesling Spatlese Trocken is ageing beautifully with great complexity and depth. Bright, clear structure of ripe yellow fruit, faint petrol aromas, clearing and giving way to fresh peach flavors, good acids, and pure slate stone minerals on the palate, backed by good weight and a refreshing, long finish.

First, a bit of backstory on this offer: This is an Old Vines, otherwise known as "Alte Reben" planting of a very special Riesling by Johann Peter Reinert. This special bottling was intended to go to Auction, but our Importer at Dee Vine Wines decided to purchase the lot, and in doing so, made this wine much more affordable to us. Auction wines in Germany of this caliber typically sell for $50 and up.

The estate has been passed directly from father to son since the first Johann Peter Reinert established it in 1813. Peter represents the fifth generation, and it is his effort over the past twenty-five years that has catapulted the estate to the front rank of producers in the Saar, despite the challenge of growing individual wines in six different villages – in more than a dozen different vineyards – that total only 4.2 hectares of vines.

The weathered blue slate of the Ritterpfad (the “Path of Knights”) in the village of Wawern faces due south. This soil along with its elevation, produces sleek, mineral-laced Riesling of aristocratic bearing. This beautiful Spätlese (late harvested fruit) has ripe, plush flavors, and has the capacity for much further development in the cellar.

Trollinger is known as Schiava or sometimes Vernaccia Rosso in Italy. The light, refreshing Swabian version done here by Andi Knauss is similarly not a tannic wine, but it has an irresistible verve and energy not unlike Poulsard that sets it apart from its Italian cousins. This vintage is the best we've tasted yet, with remarkable purity, pleasing, high-toned cherry fruit, and cleansing acidity. Thank goodness this is a 1-liter bottle. It always gets guzzled.

JOHN GILMAN - VIEW FROM THE CELLAR 91+ POINTS - "As is the case every year, there is nothing “basic” about the “basic” Riesling Trocken from Klaus-Peter Keller. In 2014, this wine finished up at 11.5 percent alcohol and eight grams per liter of acidity. The yields were very low this year for this wine and it has ended up with a rock solid core as a result, with the bouquet a fine, youthful blend of grapefruit, tart orange, petrol, chalky soil tones, lemon peel and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and quite deep, with lovely, nascent complexity, ripe, snappy acids and superb length and grip on the focused and serious finish. As Klaus-Peter noted, “perhaps this is the best basic Riesling we have made.” It deserves a few years in the cellar to start to unfold its secondary layers of complexity and is a great value in 2014. 2017-2030+."

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS  - "Pichlers’2012 Riesling Smaragd Steinertal suggests chili as well as Szechuan pepper bite and pungency, allied to rhubarb-like tartness and mouthwatering savor, all enrobed in lusciously ripe, white peach and apple on a plush palate. "This site has an effect a lot like Schutt," explains Lucas Pichler, "because the eroded stone that form its basis followed the creases and crevices in the hillside that are precisely what conduct cool air down from the woods above the vineyards." Wafting hints of chamomile and suffusion of crushed stone add to the interest and allure of this refined, long-finishing Riesling that should prove worth following through at least 2022.

"In recent years," notes Lucas Pichler, "we've been harvesting a little earlier in order to depress the alcohol levels a bit," which in 2012 meant among other things beginning with Gruner Veltliner Federspiel already in the third week of September. After what I had tasted thus far of the vintage, I was amazed to find the Rieslings here in aggregate even finer than the Gruner Veltliners, a pattern that was to be dramatically accentuated at nearby Alzinger. (I did not get chance on my most recent visit to catch-up with Pichlers’ Sauvignon Blanc from this vintage.)"

Alen Bibich has long been one of our favorite wine producers in Croatia. Located in the Skradin part of Northern Dalmatia, his lithe, minerally reds have a freshness uncommon to the reds from the more famous growing areas to the south. The R6 is a roughly equal blend of native red varieties Babich, Plavina, and Lasin aged 12 months in new American oak. All are part of the large Zinfandel family of grapes native to the region. Under 13% alcohol, the wine is lifted and high toned despite the time spent in barrel. Starting with a gentle nose of cherry kirsch and tobacco, the wines is elegant but also savage, reminiscent of red wines of the Veneto or even old school Chianti. Exceptionally food friendly this will pair with anything from goat cheese to smoked meats.

Haridimos Hatzidakis, originally from Crete, now lives and makes wine on the volcanic island of Santorini. His 2013 Santorini is a wonderfully full-flavored dry Greek white with a seam of ripe acidity at its heart that gives it vitality. It is composed of 100% organically-farmed Assyrtico. The highly regarded English wine journal, Decanter, gave this wine as having "Honey-baked fruits, banana leaf, jasmine, flowers, pine, lime and grapefruit lift. Immediately lively and bold on the full-throttle, textured, harmonious palate: mouthwatering freshness with tart lemon-curd ripeness, underlined by punchy minerality." British wine writer Jancis Robinson praises this white's "wonderful combination of citrus and mineral with quite a broad ripe palate structure but no shortage of acidity. Really attention-grabbing."

How often do you get to drink a Bordeaux-style blend from 2005 at such a reasonable price? A blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon; 35% Cabernet Franc; 25% Merlot and 5% Limnio, the 2005 Chateau Carras has won Gold Medals in Berlin and Texas. Wine writer Anthony Dias Blue describes it as "smooth, soft and herbal with ripe plum and earth; long and balanced; clean ripe and rich." We find complex aromas of blackberries, cherries and vanilla leading to a smooth, rich palate and long finish.

This red, sourced from high altitude vineyards in Lebanon's Batroun district, is composed of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon; 26% Caladoc (a cross of Malbec and Grenache); 22% Syrah and 17% Tempranillo.
