The Mongeard family has produced wine in Vosne-Romanée since the eighteenth century, and makes “old school” styled, delicately proportioned, graceful Burgundies. Their 2010 Bourgogne (Pinot Noir) is no exception. In fact, this is a great entry-level bottle of Burgundy that would please even the most seasoned wine drinker. Grapes for Val de Mer come from 18 hectares of estate fruit and miniscule parcels of purchased fruit in and around Chablis. Apart from the Vaudesir Grand Cru, all the Val de Mer Chablis hail from the left bank of the Serein River, where the wines tend to show more fruit yet maintain a distinctly Kimmeridgien minerality that can only be Chablis. The nose on this Bourgogne Blanc blends sea salt, lemon grass and a touch of cream. In the mouth, great acidity showcases lemon citrus fruit, apple flesh, mixed florals and lean minerality.
