Amarone della Valpolicella, usually known as Amarone, is a dry red wine made primarily from Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella grapes. According to tradition, the grapes are allowed to dry on straw mats, which concentrates the sugars and flavors in the grapes. The grapes are then pressed and fermented, before being aged in oak barrels. The wine resulting from this labor-intensive process is very flavorful.

The 2007 Le Bessole is voluptuous and generous in the mouth with remarkably fresh fruit including mulberry, cherry, kirsch, raspberry and baking spice. This medium-bodied Amarone is very approachable with soft, supple tannins. It is the perfect introduction for those wanting to try this classic Italian wine-at an affordable rarely seen in Amarone.

Spontaneous cover crops (grass cover) are left between the rows of vines, the grass cover is mowed and the turf is left in place (the soil is not tilled). Very low doses of SO2 are added to the wine only after fermentation and before bottling in order to preserve the product.
Salvarenza is a tiny sub-plot of the La Frosca Cru vineyard, blessed with 80 year old vines. The grapes are hand-harvested and then temperature-control fermented in oak cask of 228 liters. Malolactic fermentation and aging are also in oak: the wine rests on its lees for nine month before bottling. Aged six months in bottle prior to release.

phenolic ripeness and maturity. After a gentle pressing and fermentation, the wine is aged in second pass French Oak. ARQUA garnered the prestigious “Tre Bicchieri” award by the well- respected Gambero Rosso publication. This wine is reminiscent of a well-made Napa Valley wine or perhaps a right bank Bordeaux wine produced in a warm vintage such as 2009. It competes very favorably with wines from those appellations.

Medium ruby in color, aromas of both dried and ripe cherries, with red currants and nice toasty notes. On the palate, one is struck by the lush, silky tannins. The fruit is ripe and juicy with the cherries showing engaging brightness. The French oak is expertly matched to the wine, imparting notes of warm vanilla and milk chocolate. This wine has silky, plush tannins and is in a perfect spot in its evolution. It is drinking great right now, although it could certainly age for an additional several years.

We tasted the wines of Vignalta and were so impressed that we wanted to bring in both the Rosso Riserva and ARQUA bottlings. We feel both wines will appeal to lovers of California and Bordeaux wines and showcase excellent purity of fruit and offer tremendous value. Vignalta was founded in 1980 by Lucio Gomiero who concluded after years of tasting great Bordeaux wines, that anything Pomerol could do, he could do just as well. The appellation of Colli Euganei in Northern Italy shares the same lines of latitude with Bordeaux; therefore it is not surprising that these varietals flourish. The estate consists of 123 acres, with diverse vineyard holdings on mostly south-facing slopes taking advantage of the unique soil and varietal combinations in the area.
