SAUVION 2012 VOUVRAY LOIRE VALLEY

This Sauvion is an excellent example of a dry still wine that almost surprised us with how good it is for how little it costs. I say almost because we know how good and how inexpensive the wines can be from the Loire Valley. So much expression! Sauvion's nose highlights green apple, peach and mixed stone fruits, hay, quince, stoney minerality and light florals. The palate is rounded upon entry but trimmed with nice acidity. Orchard fruits dominate in taste, peach and nectarine in the foreground, as a light touch of honeyed river water meanders in the background. Serve chilled, with maybe a bit of goat cheese.

Chenin Blanc is a quite versatile grape from the Loire Valley in France - it contains good sweetness, acidity and fruit while remaining fairly neutral in the overall palate zone (which allows things like terroir, vintage differences and winemaker treatment to affect the taste). With such characteristics, and depending on climate conditions and desire of the winemaker, both sparkling and still (dry or dessert) wines can be made - and made well.
