HEITLFINGER 2009 BRUT BLANC DE NOIRS

In all our years of tasting so-called Sekt or Champagne-method sparkling wines from Germany, we’ve never come across a specimen quite like this. From Heitligner, a leading producer in Germany’s Baden region, winemaker Claus Burmeister has created one of the most remarkable sparkling wines we’ve ever tasted from Germany. It is a beguiling 100% Pinot Meunier cuvée drawn entirely from the 2009 vintage. Burmeister ferments 30% of the wine in oak, 70% in steel, then uses some of the original unfermented juice to complete the secondary fermentation before aging the wine sur lattes for a remarkable 4 years. The result is a breathtaking example of what can be accomplished by a keen innovator who refuses to yield to compromise. Pale in color, the wine simply bursts with unmistakable fragrances of wild strawberries, yellow orchard fruits and baked bread, all the while supported by a very fine perlage and an impressive finish. We could hardly believe our ears when Burmeister told us that this wine is a Brut Nature (i.e. completely without dosage) because there is no sense of austerity: only thought- provoking pleasure. A worthy change of pace from the usual big name Champagnes.
