VINA ILLUSION 2011 JOVEN

This is a strikingly beautiful wine grown in a vineyard set amidst olive, almond and oak trees in the sub zone of Rioja Baja. It is a blend of Tempranillo and Grenache from 20-year-old vines. The grapes are grown by winemaker Martin Alonso who founded Viña Ilusion in 1992. Grown in limestone and clay soils, Martin’s philosophy embodies the teachings of Masanobu Fukuoka who penned "One Straw Revolution." Martin traveled to Japan 30 years ago to learn from Fukuoka himself. The novel tells of the philosophy of "do nothing farming" – using neither chemical nor organic fertilizer, and using the mantra that healthy cultivation is more about long-term planning and careful observation than it is about manipulating agriculture. While at a Rioja trade tasting, a few of the Hi-Time Staff were taken by this wine for its purity and elegance. There is supple lingering cherry and raspberry flavors, light spice, with a medium-light body (think Pinot Noir), yet with a velvety, plush texture and soft tannins. It is lively and enchanting.
