VAVASOUR 2009 PINOT NOIR

"This is one of those wines whose fragrance and flavors shimmer in the glass inviting you to return to it again and again. It has silky layers of ripe (but not overly ripe or too concentrated) dark cherry flavors, plus exciting grace notes of camphor/mint, a little spice, and discreetly integrated oak. 91 Points." - Marguerite Thomas, winereviewonline.com

The Vavasours arrived in New Zealand and established themselves in the Awatere Valley in 1890. Nearly a century later in 1985, Peter Vavasour identified the Awatere Valley as the new frontier for New Zealand wine growing and planted the first grapes there. Vavasour’s first vintage was 1989; within three years they were garnering high accolades and had officially put Awatere Valley on the map of great wine making regions. In our notes, we mused about a nose full of sweet cherry/strawberry fruit with a bit of smoke, spice and mint. The palate reflected the nose with good cherry and plum fruit, more spice, a touch of smoke and light earth. This is an easy-going, delightful wine ready for spring and the rebirth of barbecue weather.
