sumptuous wine that totally covers the palate with dense dark fruit. The 2005 Pagliaro is impressive in the way it achieves superb density while retaining the elements of delicate, nuanced subtlety that inform Bea’s finest wines. winemaking methods with today's modern technology, Barberani is able to produce a variety of wines that fully express the terroir of central Italy. Created from Sangiovese and Montepulciano, this medium bodied red is fruit-forward and lightly herbaceous. Bold notes of strawberry, blueberry and violet are backed by hints of cinnamon and clove that follow through to the finish. Enjoy this wine with classic Umbrian entrees, like spit-roasted red meat, game, or hearty pasta dishes.

Sagrantino tannins. It shows marvelous balance in a full-throttle, opulent style. There is marvelous intensity in the glass as the wine builds towards the imposing yet beautifully balanced, utterly radiant finish, where varietal notes become more prominent. The 2007 Sagrantino is a great introduction for readers who are new to the grape, although this is one of the more exuberant expressions on the market. Colpetrone gave the Sagrantino 18 months in mid-size French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.”
About 6 months ago we were looking for a Sagrantino that didn’t break the bank when we heard the good news—Colpetrone lowered their prices in the US by almost half. Sagrantino di Montefalco, from Italy’s Umbria region, remains fairly rare, but these wines will easily rival Brunello for ageability and complexity, depth and power. Just last week we tasted the Colpetrone again at the annual Gamberro Rosso “Tre Bicchieri” event in San Francisco. Only the top award winners are allowed to pour at the event—about 400 wines out of 40,000+ the Gamberro Rosso tastes each year. Needless to say, The “Tre Bicchieri” is a peerless event for top tier Italian wines. But even in this select company of great (and often expensive) wines, the Colpetrone Sagrantino stayed with us and stood out as one of the best of the best. What started as a tasty find to fill a need in our Italian section has grown to a true staff favorite.

feet above sea level. The soil is clay and limestone infused with small pebbles from an ancient riverbed. This wine is vinified in a similar fashion to the single vineyard Sagrantino with a long cuvaison which extends forty to fifty days. The wine is then aged one year in stainless steel tanks, two years in large oak barrels and another year in bottle before release. The wine is not filtered. 2005 is the first year this exclusively Sagrantino-based cuvée was created.
