sees Cabernet Franc (77%), Merlot and a very small part of Cabernet Sauvignon. Like many Tuscany growers, Tenuta di Arceno is betting on Cabernet Franc’s performance in the warmer corners of Tuscany. The integration here is absolutely beautiful and the wine glides smoothly over the palate with the perfect balance of extraction, glycerin, residual sugar and acidity. The aromas span the spectrum, from bright cherry to dark chocolate.”

Arcanum is the pinnacle of the estate’s offerings. Based on Cabernet Franc, the true signature of the estate, this remarkable wine is built to age yet is drinkable young, offering aromas of violets, roses and raspberries, with long and delicate spice notes; it is a wine that is seductive yet subtle. Arcanum is sourced primarily from the Apparita and Belvedere blocks of Cabernet Franc. With superb exposure and sandy clay soils, each year these blocks shine to produce the finest expression of the variety, and the leading wine of the estate.

Vibrantly nuanced and beautifully articulated, the 2010 impresses for its striking balance and refined, sophisticated personality. This is one of the very best Solengos I can remember tasting. The style is rich and highly expressive, but with no excess weight. In 2010, Solengo is 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot, 20% Merlot and 10% Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030."

Argiano is a classic Tuscan hilltop estate in Montalcino with over 250 acres of south-facing vineyards. The estate dates to 1581 and has a long reputation as top of producer of classically-styled Brunellos—a great cradle for a Bordeaux-inspired super-Tuscan. “Solengo” was originally created in 1995 by Giacomo Taschis, the same winemaker who helped create “Sassicaia,” “Tignanello” and many of the firstwave of great Super-Tuscans. As Antonio Galloni noted in The Wine Advocate, the 2010 bottling of Solengo is balanced, beautiful, and one of the best wines from a great vintage.

and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tre is a wine of great character. A dense ruby-red color, this blend shows aromas and flavors of fresh fruit, wild red berry and tomato leaf. This well balanced, medium-bodied wine has fine tannins and a lively acidity on the finish.

LA Times: "Wine of the Week", April 27, 2013.

"Here's a Tuscan red that will roll with any summer menu. "Tre" is a blend of three grapes (mostly Sangiovese, with 10% each Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) from Brancaia's three estates in Tuscany. The 2010, easygoing but with character and substance, conjures up the taste of blueberries and dark cherries and something darker and more earthy. Think of it as a strongly drawn secondary character. Maybe not the lead, but I'm happy to open a bottle for dinner at home with friends anytime.

Drink it with pasta fagioli, hearty pasta dishes or antipasti spreads. I'd drink it with meatloaf or a burger too." -S. Irene Virbila

and sensual, the 2007 impresses for its impeccable balance and long, suave finish. The 2007 kept improving over the time I followed it. This is a vintage built on silky elegance and expressive fleshiness in the fruit, but those elements need time to emerge fully. There is an inner resonance to the 2007 I find very appealing. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.

JAMES SUCKLING 97 POINTS - "Aromas of blackberries and blueberries follow through to a full body and velvety tannins. This is so layered and deep. Fabulous texture. Better in 2014. We will see in the end whether 2006 or 2007 is better. Try in 2016"

open and resonant, the 2007 is one of the bigger wines made at Castellare over the last three decades. There is an immediacy that is quite appealing, but the wine’s bombastic personality needs some time to settle down. Our customers are all too familiar with the quality of the Brunello di Montalcinos that consistently come out of the cellars of Ciacci Piccolomini (whose origins date back to the 17th century). Now they are offering a wine that may seem to go against the grain of Tuscan standards, if not tradition; In 1989, in the absence of the high quality of fruit the estate expects for its Brunello’s, Ciacci decided not to produce a Brunello di Montalcino. This decision, however, coincided with the first harvest of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from their Estate vineyards. In a move that could only be described at the time as sacrilegious, Ciacci created a “Super Tuscan”! Yes, a wine made with those international grapes; Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Blasphemous! So, they called it “Ateo” which translates…”Atheist”, a wine that defies the prevailing belief system of winemaking in Montalcino, Tuscany and all throughout Italy! Fast forward to the current 2010 version of Ateo, the wine is not only accepted in Montalcino, it is a celebrated success story. The wine had a pinch hit role that found itself in the starting line-up! Only 1000 cases produced.

JAMES SUCKLING 90 POINTS - "Delicious soft tannins and juicy berry and chocolate fruit character. Full and round. Well-made Rosso di Montepulciano. Better than many Vino Nobles. Drink now."

There is a new vintage here which represents a new level of achievement for Fattoria del Cerro's entry level Rosso-a delicious, layered Sangiovese with bright floral elements and pure cherry fruit. The wine is also much more competitively priced as the importer came to the table with a price that is about $4/bottle less than the previous release. We also have Fattoria del Cerro's Tre Bicchieri winning Vino Nobile in the store, but for pure value and accessibility, the estate's Rosso is unbeatable.

Wine Spectator for the 2006 vintage. The Flaccianello is 100% Sangiovese from the estates top vineyard blocks and only uses the best grapes even further. The wine is aged 24 months in new French barrique, which used to be 18 months up until 2006 vintage. This wine is amazing. It is among the top I.G.T wines in Tuscany, and one of the best 100% Sangiovese wines. For the price, it is amazing young right now and is a wine that can age for 20 years without missing a stride. The Fontodi Flaccianello has been consistently great for decades, and is even better from one of the greatest Tuscany vintage ever.

The 2010 vintage in the Chianti Classico sub zone is one for the history books. The vintage was a long and cool growing season, which allowed the grapes to slowly develop and mature without losing balance. The rain that fell was almost always followed by a few weeks of sunny weather. This meant that the ground dried up, so the grapes wouldn't be diluted or have to worry about rot and mold. What this means for the grapes in the Chianti Classico zone is this. The wines developed amazing aromatics that liken to the 2004 vintage, have acid and structure (grape tannins) like 2006 vintage, with a slight bit a fruit like the 2007 vintage. For all people that love the classical vintages and styles, this is your vintage. However if you just love great wines to pop and drink this is also the vintage for you.

Sweet red cherries, tobacco, flowers and spices meld together beautifully in this deep, resonant Fontalloro. This is a more immediate, round style than the Rancia. We’ve had some great success this year introducing our customers to Rocca di Frassinello’s second wine, “Le Sughere di Frassinello,” and we’ve been eagerly waiting for this—the estate’s “Gran Vin,” a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. We’ve been following the Rocca di Frassinello estate for the last couple years—bring Chateau Lafite into a joint venture on the Tuscan coast with Chianti’s much heralded Castellare estate and you have our attention. Time and again, our favorite bottling from Frassinello has been the “Le Sughere di Frassinello.” “Le Sughere” is meant as second wine from the large Frassinello estate, next to the more age-worthy top wine simply called “Rocca di Frassinello.” However, there is so much more charm and immediate pleasure in “Le Sughere di Frassinello” that we always want to go back this wine. The 2009 bottling of “Le Sughere” earned 93 points in the Wine Advocate and a Top 100 mention in the Wine Spectator. Both publications gave the newly released 2010 “Le Sughere” 90pts while the Gamberro Rosso awarded the 2010 “Le Sughere” Tre Bicchieri, Italy’s highest award for wine. The blend hasn’t changed (50% Sangioveto, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 25% Merlot), but we found the 2010 to show more of its Bordeaux influence with polished black currant fruit alongside notes of cedar, sandalwood, and espresso. But of course, the sunshine of the Tuscan coast makes these elements warmer, richer, and more ready to enjoy.
