vintage that straddles the line between traditional and modern-style Rioja. It offers up a soaring perfume of wood smoke, pencil lead, exotic spices, lavender, and blackberry that leads to a dense, impeccably balanced, lengthy effort that has the structure to evolve for 5-7 years while showing why 2004 is such an esteemed vintage in Rioja. It should see its 20th birthday in fine form."

It’s finally arrived!!! Founded in 1985, Baron de Ley is a single estate winery located in Rioja Baja focusing on high quality Reserva and Gran Reserva wines. Based on the “Chateau” concept, grapes are sourced exclusively from the property’s estate vineyards. This is an innovative step in a region where bodegas typically source grapes from independent growers throughout the area.

Baron de Ley’s unique personality blends the best of old and new. Located on the grounds of a 16th century monastery on the east bank of the river Ebro in Mendavia, the estate covers 175 acres planted primarily to Tempranillo, and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. Quality and attention to detail are an obsession at Baron de Ley, where the ancient architecture belies to the latest winemaking equipment.

We have been waiting for this 2004 Gran Reserva for a while. Tasting other vintages we think you will like this wine now as well as in the future.

On the nose, we get a vast palette of scents: black cherry, sandalwood, soy sauce, carob, mixed exotic spices and herbs, dark florals, black raspberry-- pretty much a "wow!" nose; very expressive. The palate leads with sweet fruit, more exotic spices, a dark medley of berries and minerality. This is elegant but confident wine as the flavors and scents merge harmoniously without 'too much' of any single component blaring through; this while the tannins and acidity interweave throughout the rich mouthfeel, uplifting and sustaining the complete mise-en-scéne of the wine. The finish is lengthy and tasty. Again: wow!

cigarbox overtones. Sweet, palate-coating cherry and cassis flavors are braced by gentle acidity and become spicier with air. Mocha and smoke note linger on a long, supple and gently tannic finish with very good energy.”

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "Still fresh and bright, this juicy red offers cherry, berry, chocolate and licorice flavors. The tannins are light but firm, the acidity has an orange peel note, and the finish is sweet and clean. Drink now through 2015."

We see a pattern here—the 2001 Gran Riserva from Beronia made Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list for 2011, but the wine had just sold out when the list was published. Again, with the 2004 vintage, Beronia’s Gran Riserva made the Spectator’s Top 100 in 2012, about a month after the 2004 had completely sold out. We love the balance of age and aroma, pot-pourri flowers and lovely cherry fruit that we’ve seen in these Gran Riserva wines. The newly released 2005 Gran Riserva is here and it delivers again—a top quality wine aged for seven years at the winery to ensure prime drinking is a rare and beautiful thing in the wine business, and we love Beronia for their Gran Riservas.

Paso Robles, he fell in love with wine and decided to make his livelihood in the wine business. Hey…can you blame him?!? He has worked with many of the superstars of the Central Coast, including Matt Garretson, Augie Hug, and Alta Maria Vineyards. Today, he is the assistant winemaker at Barrel 27, and works alongside one of our best friends, McPrice Myers (what a mentor!), when Edgar isn’t tinkering on his own wines. We sampled his latest releases a few months ago, and they really knocked our socks off! The intensity of these wines are rivaled by few here in the United States, and we suggest you check out what Edgar can do!

Edgar’s Tempranillo comes from French Camp Vineyard on the hilly Southeast area of Paso Robles. While it is warm enough to fully ripen Tempranillo, this region of Paso is slightly more moderate than other parts. This means you get physiologically mature fruit that isn’t overripe. Aged for 18 months in a combination of new and used barrels, this wine has a crazy aroma of rhubarb pie, lingonberry, sweet applewood smoke, mint leaf, cinnamon, red licorice, camphor bark, coffee. The Tempranillo offers flavors of rich dried raspberry and cherry, baking chocolate, vanilla bean, and has fine and grippy tannins with a long, strong finish.

Last year, winemaker Edgar Torres brought us a couple wines that were simply amazing! This year is no different, other than the fact that he has a new wine that is really gets us excited! Read More...
His latest bottling is called "Toro de Paso", a blend of 37% Tempranillo, 26% Grenache, and 37% Merlot. The Tempranillo and Grenache are a couple of the primary grapes in many Spanish reds, and coming from this Central Coast region, calling this wine Toro de Paso just made sense. From the first pour, we were hooked, as this wine displays an intense garnet color with a purple hue, and aromas of violets, spice, dried cherries, strawberries, plums, and violets. Similar flavors follow suit, where they are joined by blueberries, blackberries, minerals, grilled meat, and just the right amount of tannin. Rich, juicy, forward, and still retaining good structure, this wine is tasty now, and should continue to drink well for another 5-7 years. Could this Spanish/Bordeaux blend be the next big style to come out of Paso Robles?...We think other wineries should take note!
