for its depth, this red delivers plum, currant, licorice, tar and mineral flavors that are rich and focused. The firm tannins are well-integrated, kept lively by fresh acidity. Smoke and floral notes mingle on the long finish. Drink now through 2031. 30,000 cases made."

The Seleccion Especial from Abadia Retuerta is back at Hi Time. This wine quickly disappeared after being named #15 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2015 and we are thrilled to have it back in stock. This is a serious, well-balanced wine with a rich bouquet and deep fruit flavors. This fantastic red blend is from Sardon de Duero, a wine-growing area in northern Spain west of Ribera del Duero. It is part of the prestigious 'Golden Mile' (La Milla de Oro) of wineries located along the Duero River in the autonomous community of Castilla y Leon. La Milla de Oro has a special microclimate and is home to some of Spain's most renowned wineries including Vega Sicilia, Dominio de Pingus and Bodegas Mauro.

The Special Selection is produced from the best grapes from each of Abadia's vineyards. It combines the richness of Tempranillo with the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and gains additional complexity from the addition of Syrah and Merlot. This delicious wine is an outstanding value and over-delivers for the price!

2011 it ripened perfectly and also reveals showy, dark aromas of graphite, black pepper and smoke. It does have some aromas of dark chocolate and smoke, but the oak is perfectly integrated and makes those aromas of paprika come out and provide freshness. The palate is medium to full-bodied with classical dusty, grainy tannins, good acidity, and very good balance, a big, powerful and ripe Cabernet which really benefitted from the 2011 growing season. This has to be one of the top Cabernet Sauvignons produced in Spain. Drink 2015-2020."

with sand; it is a relatively warm soil that provides good homogeneous ripeness of the grapes, vintage after vintage. As with all of the single vineyards, it fermented with indigenous yeasts and went through malolactic fermentation in brad new French oak barrels, where it had an upbringing of 18 months before bottling after a clarification with egg whites. I found the character of orange peel that I frequently saw in the Ribera del Duero reds in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with some rusticity and a little dustiness, with character. There are fine-grained tannins, good balance and a dusty texture that fills your mouth. It has very good balance and it will age nicely. 5,700 bottles, 275 magnums and 18 double magnums were filled from the 22 barrels in one single lot on June 17th 2014."

matured for 16 months in new Nevers barrels (that’s a difference with Vega Sicilia; for Alion all wood is French). It is an exuberant, ripe Alion, with hedonist’s aromas that jump out of the glass. Winemaker Javier Ausas tells me he likes the wines when they are young and showy like this one. It is indeed a showy vintage, with aromas of violets, molasses, cereals and a whiff of malt whisky. We tasted the wine a little warm, but that does not benefit the wine, which should be served at 15-16 C and allowed to warm up and open up in the glass. It’s also quite smoky, with reminiscences of very good barrels, black aromas, violets, black olives and fresh plums. The palate is tannic with lactic and warm flavors. This is a very exuberant, showy vintage for Alion, and here I tend to agree with Ausas: even though this has plenty of stuffing to age I’d drink it young in its exuberant phase. 290,000 bottles produced. Drink now-2019."

Last year, winemaker Edgar Torres brought us a couple wines that were simply amazing! This year is no different, other than the fact that he has a new wine that is really gets us excited! Read More...
His latest bottling is called "Toro de Paso", a blend of Tempranillo, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Tempranillo and Grenache are a couple of the primary grapes in many Spanish reds, and coming from this Central Coast region, calling this wine Toro de Paso just made sense.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 91+ POINTS - "Edgar Torres continues to fashion rich, full-throttle Paso Robles reds that have a Spanish flair. His 2012s and 2013s are both rock solid and these are certainly reasonably priced given the quality."

"A wine that has some upside, the 2012 Toro de Paso has that classic Tempranillo character of blueberry and darker fruits, cedar plank, spice-box, leather and smoked meats. These give way to a medium to full-bodied wine that has solid concentration, a focused, streamlined texture and building tannin, all of which suggest it will evolve nicely. A blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Grenache and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 18-20 months in 40% new French and American oak, give it a year or two in the cellar and enjoy bottles through 2024."

but its opulent red berry, cherry and dark chocolate flavors are enlivened by strong minerality. As deeply concentrated and palate-staining as this wine is, it shows unlikely elegance. In fact, this reminds me a little of a modern Bordeaux The finish is sweet, smoky and very long."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - " The 2007 Vino del Olivo (named after an 800-year-old olive tree) is a blend of 88% Tempranillo and 12% Graciano. It has a hedonistic, flamboyant bouquet of macerated red cherries and crushed strawberry, with hints of marmalade and fresh fig underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with a very polished, oaky entry. There are plush red fruits with cassis and blueberry cut through with crisp acidity leading to a tensile, velvety-smooth finish. It is a decadent, but composed Rioja."

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - " Black cherry, plum, tobacco and loam flavors mingle in this broad red. This has slightly chewy tannins, but remains fresh."

the Vina Real winery. As with the Reserva, the Crianza is usually a blend of 90% Tempranillo complemented with small amounts of Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. 2010 had textbook climatic conditions to be a great vintage. The destemmed grapes carry out both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats and the wine ages for some 14 months in French and American oak barrels. This 2010 has a nice bright cherry color with a clean and open nose displaying red fruits and a spicy touch, coming through as quite a traditional nose and a polished palate with good acidity as they aim for freshness and drinkability. This Crianza represents superb value for money. Drink now-2020."

La Rioja is blessed with the perfect conditions for excellent vineyards. Its soil and climate are favorable for growing vitis vinifera, and its wine culture runs deep and wide. There are good reasons why this land enjoys international recognition for its outstanding wines. Cune, with its three wineries and the many international prizes earned by its wines, has also contributed to making Rioja the global benchmark it is today.

Cune`s Viña Real winery is located on top of the Cerro de la Mesa, in Rioja Alavesa, an area celebrated for its fruit-forward wines, a land with a soil that supports the best native red wine grape varieties and that enjoys an optimum mesoclimate. Most vines here grow from the highlands of the Sierra de Cantabria down to the Ebro River on southern-facing slopes the calcareous sediment of the hills makes the soil ideal. Rioja Alavesa was one of Spain`s pioneering regions in the barrel-aging of wines, and Viña Real was one of the first to make crianza wines in this area.

Cune has been a long time staff and customer favorite from Rioja. Over the years we have had the privilege of tasting their Gran Reservas as far back as the 50’s. Our reactions are always the same, we ooh and awe, treasuring every sip.
