in Laguardia averaging 30 years of age. It is fermented in open stainless steel tanks and aged in French oak barrels for one year. It’s a little closed and requires some time to start showing its nose. The palate is explosive, with clean acidity and balance, pure, hedonistic with great depth. It slowly develops some minty, balsamic aromas coating the red fruit, with even notes of fennel. 150,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2014-2022. "

WINE ENTHUSIAST 91 POINTS - "Everything about this highly functional Rioja is nice. The nose is fresh, minerally and shows complexities like cinnamon aromas and herbs. The palate is snappy and racy, but not shear or acidic. Flavors of plum, berry and oak are pure and bold, while the finish is dry, lightly toasted and shows minerality and coffee notes. Drink through 2019. "

INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR 91 POINTS - - "Assertive red fruit and floral scents are brightened by a minerally nuance. Spicy, penetrating and gently sweet, offering bitter cherry and raspberry flavors and a touch of rose. The long finish features gentle tannic grip and very good spicy lift, leaving a cherry pit note behind."

On the palate it is an unctuous and silky.

The grapes come from old Tinto Fino vineyards located on clay-limy hills with a low yield. The 2004 vintage was a historic one due to the weather conditions: rainy Fall, freezing Winter, slight showers during Spring time and a dry Summer. The harvest season was the hottest ever.

His latest bottling is called "Toro de Paso", a blend of 37% Tempranillo, 26% Grenache, and 37% Merlot. The Tempranillo and Grenache are a couple of the primary grapes in many Spanish reds, and coming from this Central Coast region, calling this wine Toro de Paso just made sense. From the first pour, we were hooked, as this wine displays an intense garnet color with a purple hue, and aromas of violets, spice, dried cherries, strawberries, plums, and violets. Similar flavors follow suit, where they are joined by blueberries, blackberries, minerals, grilled meat, and just the right amount of tannin. Rich, juicy, forward, and still retaining good structure, this wine is tasty now, and should continue to drink well for another 5-7 years. Could this Spanish/Bordeaux blend be the next big style to come out of Paso Robles?...We think other wineries should take note!

for at least 15 months. It has a generous nose of red cherries, over-ripe oranges and Indian ink that is attractive, if not overly complex. The palate is rounded and slightly leathery on the entry. INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR 91 POINTS "Dark ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berry and cherry preserves, with smoke, game and violet accents. Plush and expansive, offering spicy cherry and cassis flavors and notes of candied flowers and bitter chocolate. Vanilla and cracked pepper build with air and carry through a long, sappy and gently tannic finish. Incidentally, the 2008 bottling of this wine is drinking very well right now, with plenty of juicy dark berry character and brightening minerality; no rush to drink it but no crime to do so now, either."

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "Juicy black cherry and red plum flavors mingle with notes of licorice, black pepper and toast in this firm, fresh red. Displays enough structure for food but remains balanced and lively."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS "The 2009 Condado de Haza Crianza undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrique where it ages for 15 months. It offers a lovely ripe, yet controlled bouquet of raspberry, kirsch and incense that blossom with aeration. You can almost smell that Ribera warmth! The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins over-layering a sweet core of red fruit. It is playful and joyful, belying its fine structure and citric fresh finish. This is a wonderful wine from Condada de Haza."

Sweet and open-knit red fruit flavors gain weight and depth with air, picking up licorice and cocoa powder qualities and a touch of floral pastilles. Silky and open-knit, offering juicy dark berry and violet pastille flavors and a touch of mocha. The floral note carries through on the finish, which features soft tannins and slow-building spiciness. As usual, this is a fantastic value.”

This year, the “Codice” is undeniable, a seductive mix of pretty, spicy Tempranillo fruit with just enough oak to add depth and richness.
