His latest bottling is called "Toro de Paso", a blend of 37% Tempranillo, 26% Grenache, and 37% Merlot. The Tempranillo and Grenache are a couple of the primary grapes in many Spanish reds, and coming from this Central Coast region, calling this wine Toro de Paso just made sense. From the first pour, we were hooked, as this wine displays an intense garnet color with a purple hue, and aromas of violets, spice, dried cherries, strawberries, plums, and violets. Similar flavors follow suit, where they are joined by blueberries, blackberries, minerals, grilled meat, and just the right amount of tannin. Rich, juicy, forward, and still retaining good structure, this wine is tasty now, and should continue to drink well for another 5-7 years. Could this Spanish/Bordeaux blend be the next big style to come out of Paso Robles?...We think other wineries should take note!

INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR 91 POINTS "Dark ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berry and cherry preserves, with smoke, game and violet accents. Plush and expansive, offering spicy cherry and cassis flavors and notes of candied flowers and bitter chocolate. Vanilla and cracked pepper build with air and carry through a long, sappy and gently tannic finish. Incidentally, the 2008 bottling of this wine is drinking very well right now, with plenty of juicy dark berry character and brightening minerality; no rush to drink it but no crime to do so now, either."

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "Juicy black cherry and red plum flavors mingle with notes of licorice, black pepper and toast in this firm, fresh red. Displays enough structure for food but remains balanced and lively."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS "The 2009 Condado de Haza Crianza undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrique where it ages for 15 months. It offers a lovely ripe, yet controlled bouquet of raspberry, kirsch and incense that blossom with aeration. You can almost smell that Ribera warmth! The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins over-layering a sweet core of red fruit. It is playful and joyful, belying its fine structure and citric fresh finish. This is a wonderful wine from Condada de Haza."

but its opulent red berry, cherry and dark chocolate flavors are enlivened by strong minerality. As deeply concentrated and palate-staining as this wine is, it shows unlikely elegance. In fact, this reminds me a little of a modern Bordeaux The finish is sweet, smoky and very long."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - " The 2007 Vino del Olivo (named after an 800-year-old olive tree) is a blend of 88% Tempranillo and 12% Graciano. It has a hedonistic, flamboyant bouquet of macerated red cherries and crushed strawberry, with hints of marmalade and fresh fig underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with a very polished, oaky entry. There are plush red fruits with cassis and blueberry cut through with crisp acidity leading to a tensile, velvety-smooth finish. It is a decadent, but composed Rioja."

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - " Black cherry, plum, tobacco and loam flavors mingle in this broad red. This has slightly chewy tannins, but remains fresh."

Cune has forever been Hi-Time Staff 1 or our top 2 wineries in Rioja. We have had the privilege through out the years of tasting their Gran Reservas as far back as the 50’s. Our reactions are always the same, we ooh and awe, treasuring every sip. Just recently Wine Spectator’s Top 100 garnered Cune Imperial 2004 Gran Reserva as their #1 Wine of the Year. A truly fantastic vintage and yes, we sold out earlier in the year. We are able to offer their 2005 Gran Rerserva, which is another stellar year for Rioja. Limited supply.

and incense. Stains the palate with intense blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter with air. Packs a serious punch but comes off as lithe and precise, finishing with strong cut and length and silky tannins that come up slowly."

ROBERT PARKER 92 POINTS - "The 2007 Gran Reserva is mostly Tempranillo with a little Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo fermented in inox. The nose displays abundant notes of red fruit intermixed with more complex and developed aromas of leather, raw meat, cloves and nutmeg. It has some grainy tannins, with good acidity, and comes through as easy to drink, straightforward, perhaps a little bit thin in the palate for a Vina Real Gran Reserva. A Gran Reserva to enjoy now. Drink 2014-2022."

the Vina Real winery. As with the Reserva, the Crianza is usually a blend of 90% Tempranillo complemented with small amounts of Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. 2010 had textbook climatic conditions to be a great vintage. The destemmed grapes carry out both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats and the wine ages for some 14 months in French and American oak barrels. This 2010 has a nice bright cherry color with a clean and open nose displaying red fruits and a spicy touch, coming through as quite a traditional nose and a polished palate with good acidity as they aim for freshness and drinkability. This Crianza represents superb value for money. Drink now-2020."

La Rioja is blessed with the perfect conditions for excellent vineyards. Its soil and climate are favorable for growing vitis vinifera, and its wine culture runs deep and wide. There are good reasons why this land enjoys international recognition for its outstanding wines. Cune, with its three wineries and the many international prizes earned by its wines, has also contributed to making Rioja the global benchmark it is today.

Cune`s Viña Real winery is located on top of the Cerro de la Mesa, in Rioja Alavesa, an area celebrated for its fruit-forward wines, a land with a soil that supports the best native red wine grape varieties and that enjoys an optimum mesoclimate. Most vines here grow from the highlands of the Sierra de Cantabria down to the Ebro River on southern-facing slopes the calcareous sediment of the hills makes the soil ideal. Rioja Alavesa was one of Spain`s pioneering regions in the barrel-aging of wines, and Viña Real was one of the first to make crianza wines in this area.

Cune has been a long time staff and customer favorite from Rioja. Over the years we have had the privilege of tasting their Gran Reservas as far back as the 50’s. Our reactions are always the same, we ooh and awe, treasuring every sip.

tannins and citrusy acidity keep this lively. Though the flavors are maturing, the wine remains fresh. Drink now through 2020."

The Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva is an amazingly complex wine produced only in years when the quality of the grapes is very high and supports the lengthy aging process required by the Gran Reserva designation. Wine critics have hailed the 2005 vintage as one of the great vintages of the last decade in Rioja. The El Coto winery has enjoyed great success in Europe and is just now being brought into the United States in very limited quantities. In fact, only 120 cases of this wine were imported into this country!

This 100% Tempranillo-based wine is exceptionally balanced with the smooth drinkability gained from 24 months of aging in American oak and 36 months in bottle prior to release. This is a delicious, savory wine, which benefits from at least 2 hours of decanting to really show its complexity and is exactly what a quality Gran Reserva Rioja should taste like. It is a wine of character and elegance, which is well balanced and harmonious.

Medium ruby fading to a garnet edge. The nose is very complex, showing dried red fruit, cigar box, forest floor, earth and herbs. The palate is refined and the tannins are resolved and silky. Nice acidity brightens the character of the fruit. Cherry, pomegranate and red currants predominate with additional notes of cedar, tobacco and leather. With aeration, the wine becomes very savory and pairs well with lamb, pork, steak and aged cheeses.
