THE HILT 2011 PINOT NOIR "VANGUARD" SANTA BARBARA COUNTY 750mL

The Hilt is a new Pinot Noir project made by winemaker Matt Dees. Matt is the winemaker at Jonata and The Paring, and he brings the same dedication to The Hilt wines. Out of the 10 varieties planted at the Rancho de San Carlos de Jonata, there is no Pinot Noir. Only grapes from the Ranch should be under the estate namesake label. La Poesia de Jonata is discontinued as a label, it is now part of The Hilt line of wines.

ANTONIO GALLONI 95 POINTS - "The 2011 Pinot Noir Vanguard is a much deeper, more powerful wine than the Vanguard. Black cherries, mint, licorice and French oak all meld together in a rich, voluptuous wine loaded with class and pedigree. The Old Guard turns positively explosive with air. Today it is striking. The 2011 was made predominantly from Sanford & Benedict with a dollop of fruit from Bien Nacido. Winemaker Matt Dees used 45% new oak on the 2011 Vanguard. Drinking window: 2013 - 2021."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "These awesome wines are made by Matt Dees and the Jonata team and are named after the idea that the wines are farmed to “The Hilt.” Sourced from Sanford & Benedict, Solomon Hills and Bien Nacido vineyards, they were some of the most impressive efforts I was able to taste during my time spent in Santa Barbara County.

"Looking at the reds, the 2011 Pinot Noir Vanguard offers up a savory, masculine feel with earthy black cherry, spice box and edgy minerality that flows to a medium-bodied, concentrated and razor sharp palate. There’s no baby fat here and this impressive effort should be given another year or three in the cellar. Drink 2016-2023+."
