of this tasting, the 2011 Cornas Empreintes offers up smoky, earthy notes of truffle, black currants, creme de cassis and damp soil to go with a medium to full-bodied, pure and lively profile on the palate. Gaining in richness and depth in the glass, it’s a beautifully done Cornas to drink over the coming decade."

WINE SPECTATOR 91 POINTS: "Dark yet fresh, offering blackberry and mulled black cherry fruit, with vibrant acidity, lively olive and tobacco notes and a good brambly feel through the finish. Best from 2014 through 2023. 1,500 cases made." –JM

aromas and flavors of black raspberry, graphite, beef blood, iron, cedar and white pepper (among other things). This is Cornas at its finest, with insane aromatics, full-bodied richness and massive concentration, yet at the same time staying elegant, seamless and gorgeously pure. It’s more approachable than the 2010, but should still need 3-4 years of cellaring and have two decades of longevity."

More fresh and focused, with heavenly black raspberry, wild flower, underbrush, crushed rock-like minerality and hints of vanilla, it flows onto the palate with a seamless, pure silk texture that carries awesome concentration, ultra-fine tannin and incredible length. It will need more cellar time than the 2009, and have 2-3 decades of prime drinking."

of the 2009. While it doesn’t have the over the top exuberance of the prior vintage, it offers incredibly pure, detailed and classic aromas and flavors of black pepper, currants, blackberry, mineral and smoked bacon fat. Guigal before establishing their own vineyard in 1987. Yves Gangloff draws his wine-making experience from the time he spent at the Rhône Domaine Delas.
The intensely fruity Côte-Rôties of Gangloff has won numerous fans, among those many sommeliers, who enjoy matching them with local black truffle dishes. Gangloff labels -usually voluptuous nudes, are painted by Yves' brother. Made with 8% Viognier from small sites centred on Tupins and Combard in the Côte Blonde, this is fleshy, spicy and indulgent, but with finely tailored tannins and beautiful poise on the finish, bearing all the hallmarks of Gangloffian excellence and tempting potential drinkers to an early symposium.

Hermitage has a knockout texture, masses of fine tannin and a great finish. Enjoy it over the coming 15 years or more.

This was a rock star lineup by owner/winemaker Florent Viale. Covering roughly 13 hectares in Crozes Hermitage (mostly around the villages of Mercurol and Tain) and just under two hectares in Hermitage, the wines from this domaine see a traditional vinification followed by aging mostly in older demi-muids, with new oak kept to around 20% for most of the cuvees. The wines are classic, textbook examples of their appellations and should not be missed. The fact that they can represent good value is just icing on the cake."

We love it when we can get a good deal to you, especially when it means getting a declassified Cornas at Cotes du Rhone pricing. Such is the case with a wine from the young winemaker, Matthieu Barret, who comes from a generation of winemakers (his grandfather founded Domaine du Coulet after WWII), and Matthieu has farmed biodynamically in the Northern Rhone since 2002. His Cornas, Domaine Coulet, demands $50 and above price points and routinely scores 93-96 points from Wine Spectator. James Molesworth of WS called Matthieu “…the future in Cornas (and) ...the single most exciting new domaine in the appellation today.” Had this wine come from a different zip code, the price would change dramatically. But as the old Real Estate saying goes, it’s all about “location, location, location,” and it is you Dear Reader, who benefits from this districting loophole.

The wine we are offering is Matthieu Barret’s 2013 “Petit Ours Brun”, or “Little Brown Bear” Cotes du Rhone. A wine made of 100% Syrah from vineyards which lie between Cornas and St. Joseph, with 40-year-old vines and aged in neutral barrels. This sumptuous wine is generous with violets, boysenberry, and red fruits, and finishes with a smoky meaty character and crushed rock. This is a seamless, complex wine without getting ponderous, and is utterly charming and delicious. This is a no-brainer of a Northern Rhone buy and is definitely a wine to “back the truck” on, or in this case, fill your cave with this “Little Brown Bear.”

Along the steep, narrow valley that traces the northern Rhône, the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph take their place among the great wines of France, and Domaine Read More...
Faury is one of the region’s most artisanal producers. When Philippe Faury took over the domaine in 1979, the family was selling wine, peaches and cherries, and the bulk of their clientele was local. Over the years, Philippe expanded their holdings to over eleven hectares, and expanded sales to an international client base. In addition, he has shared his savoir faire with his son, Lionel. Since 2006, Lionel has taken over the reins at Domaine Faury, though father and son still work side by side.

The steep slopes of the northern Rhône present a challenging terrain where farming is only feasible through terracing. On these terraced slopes, the Faurys’ vines take full advantage of the southern and southeastern sun exposure, benefitting from optimum ripening. A combination of the predominately granitic soil, partial de-stemming (in about 70% of the grapes), soft crushing of the grapes with a pneumatic press, and temperature controlled fermentation offer a liveliness and freshness that one does not often find in wines from the northern Rhône. There’s a real attention to detail here, and nothing is done in haste. Every method used encourages the grape towards greatness with the ultimate respect for its fragility. Pigeage, the punching of the cap, is not carried out with tools, but gently by foot – not just poetic but also pragmatic. Unlike many other vignerons in the region, the Faurys have a strong aversion to new oak. Though the reds definitely see time in barrels, there is a rotation between new and old alike, along with a variety of sizes, ranging from the smaller barriques to the larger 600-liter demi-muids. Unfined and only lightly filtered before bottling, these wines are loaded with classic flavors and show a remarkable rustic elegance.

vineyard site is rocky and dramatic, chiseled row by row into the hillside. The result is another level of winemaking in Chile-- yes, the wine is full and dark; suffused with blueberry, pepper, spice and black olive. However, the nobility of the Syrah grape is also in notes of dried herbs, dried flowers, delicate red fruit and a haunting prettiness underneath the all that heft. Some Syrahs miss these subtler notes, but John Duval brings it all together beautifully in this wine.

Two years ago we discovered the Viña Ventisquero line from Chile. At the time we wrote, “WOW, what a lineup-- pure, multi-layered wines at unbeatable values,” adding several wines across many price points. At a recent trade show, we tasted the full line again and knew it was time to buy up, but this time we were most impressed with “the best of the best” selections from the “Grey” Gran Riserva tier and a few prestige bottlings. Ventisquero owns over 4,000 acres across top growing areas in Chile, from Casablanca, Maipo, Apalta, and more. The “Grey” wines represent the best blocks in the best vineyard from Ventisquero’s vast holdings. Winemaker Felipe Tosso is a star in Chile, but for these higher tier wines benefit from the added assistance of consultant John Duval, famed as the man entrusted to make Penfolds Grange for over 20 years. This collection is impressive and drinks well above their price tags that seem downright modest in the American market.

with strong but well-integrated acidity giving definition to the dark fruit, smoked meat and chocolate flavors. Concentrated, plush syrah in a northern Rhone-like style. Finishes broad, smooth and very long, with suave tannins."

This flawless 100% Syrah 2010 illustrates the joy of vividly pure sweet fruit underpinned by spicy, supple tannins. "Cuvee Ameena", named after the winemaker's daughter, as been matured in 40% new French oak for 18 months. This traditional wine is fined but unfiltered, which may deposit a sediment and might require decanting.

People who sell French oak to wineries are incisive tasters and highly knowledgeable about winemaking. They have the rare opportunity to work with dozens of different houses and to taste many wines as informal consultants. So it wasn't so big a leap for Christophe Durand, who moved to Cape Town from France in 1995 to sell French oak barrels, to jump to the other side and become a winemaker. He bought a vineyard in the Simonsberg ward of South Africa's most famous wine area, Stellenbosch.

While Simonsberg’s Vins D’Orrance may be a relatively young wine estate, its French born owner and winemaker, Christophe Durand, certainly made the local wine fraternity sit up and take notice when one of his wines, the 2009 Cuvée Annais Chardonnay, was chosen to be served at the royal wedding of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco. This “amazing” white wine was chosen as a tribute to Princess Charlene and her home country, and perfectly complemented the royal reception.
