ANCIENT PEAKS 11 RENEGADE

This wine floored us from the very first sip! Ancient Peaks sits in the Paso Robles appellation, 22 miles south of the city itself, and just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Here, Read More...
the surrounding peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range act as a gateway between one region to the south that is exceedingly ocean-cooled, and another to the north that is much, much warmer (sometimes downright hot!). When the days heat up in the areas north and east of Margarita Vineyard, the air rises to create a vacuum that pulls marine breezes and fog inland over the peaks, and right through the vineyard. This means the fruit gets ripe, without any “off” flavors, yet the cooling afternoon breezes help the resulting wine to retain freshness and acidity. Renegade is a blend of 62% Syrah, 28% Petit Verdot, and 10% Malbec. The wine opens with extravagant aromas of black fruit, blueberry, vanilla bean and smoked bacon. Flavors of black cherry, black currant and wild raspberry cascade along a plush, mouthfilling texture along with trailing notes of cola, spice and toasty oak. Power yields to elegance on the finish, with clean structure and smooth tannins leading the way.

in the northern part of the Lower Hunter. Planted in 1998, the red brown loam soils over limestone are what give this wine its unique floral lift and character. The relatively vigourous vines are usually crop thinned to around 4 tonnes per Hectare each year which ensures even ripening and produces wonderfully concentrated fruit. 50 cases for US Market."

undercurrents set off by wild spice notes of star anise, rose petal, licorice and fennel. On the palate, this freight train of a wine delivers loads of spiced plum and dark berry fruit, supported by layers of Mexican chocolate, Chinese black tea, and blood orange all framed in spice notes of caraway, toasted vanilla, cigar box and sweet black pepper. The pure, powerful finish stretches on to the horizon supported by great acidity and well developed tannins. Some Paso Robles locals say this is possibly the World's Best Steak Wine!

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "These value-priced efforts are made by McPrice Myers and offer ridiculously good drinking for not much money. The wines are, generally speaking, upfront and fruit-loaded, yet always offer solid complexity, good richness and overall very well-made profiles.

"A blend of Syrah, Tempranillo and Petit Verdot, the 2009 Bull by the Horns is the most structured of the bunch. Showing a deep purple color, it delivers loads of dried spice-laced red and black fruits, licorice, leafy herbs, leather and meaty qualities to go with a medium to full-bodied, structured, yet well-textured palate. Balanced, rich and with solid freshness, it, too, needs another year or so in bottle and will shine over the coming 5-6 years. Drink 2014-2019."
BARREL 27 11 SY RIGHT HAND MAN

As if their white wasn’t good enough (yeah...right!), if the “High on the Hog” was the left hand, then why shouldn’t they have a red as their “Right Hand”? Winemaker Mac Myers (owner/Read More...
winemaker for McPrice Myers) contributes a little wine from his own project in order to make the Barrel 27 Syrah. So in a sense, here you get a wine that may retail for twice the price! This has been a tremendous sell in the past, so you can expect how incredible the highly-acclaimed 2008 is!

The wine possesses a deep black garnet color and a powerhouse nose of black plum, blackberry and black cherry fruits, with floral elements of lavender, candy mint and violets, followed up by notes of black pepper, tarry creosote, cola berry, blood orange and dried cranberry. The dense, rich mouth is dominated by dark plum and blackberry fruit with flavors of Chinese Black tea, anise/black licorice, rose water, red grapefruit and warm crème brulee. The wine's long finish is dominated by fruit, spice and a long graphite and soil note. Great acidity and excellent tannin provide the perfect structure for the biggest Right Hand Man to date!

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "The 2010 Syrah Right Hand Man is a smoking value that’s loaded with character. A blend of 97% Syrah and 3% Petite Sirah that spent 18 months in 10% new French and American oak, it dishes out fantastic complexity for the price point with cassis, licorice, wild herbs and caramelized meat aromas and flavors all emerging from the glass. Medium-bodied, plush and pure, with notable tannin, it’s a serious wine for very little buck. Enjoy it over the coming year or three. Drink now-2016."

he fell in love with wine and decided to make his livelihood in the wine business. Hey…can you blame him?!? He has worked with many of the superstars of the Central Coast, including Matt Garretson, Augie Hug and Alta Maria Vineyards. Today he works alongside one of our best friends, McPrice Myers over at Barrel 27 (what a mentor!), when Edgar isn’t tinkering on his own wines. We sampled his latest releases last month and they really knocked our socks off! The intensity of these wines are rivaled by few here in the United States and we suggest you check out what Edgar can do! El CabRhone is a play on words, as this is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Rhone varietals (30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre). The wine offers a lovely blackberry and plum core which is surrounded by cinnamon and sweet applewood smoke notes, with orange-peel-candied-in-chocolate elements. Fine tannins and elegant acidity combine with the pure fruit and spices for a long, seamless finish. Only 145 cases were produced!

in Santa Maria Valley, which produces the closest analogue we have found to a Northern Rhône Syrah – tannic and meaty in the lower registers; peppery, fruitful and delicately floral in the top, all the while showing great balance and harmony. A small amount of ultra-low-yielding hilltop Biodynamic® Syrah comes from the Chequera vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles. A select group of non-irrigated, centenarian Contra Costa vineyards continues to provide Mourvèdre for Cigare. A touch of Cinsault provides a very particular fragrance of flowers and aromatic herbs, and an even smaller morsel of Carignane adds notes of earthy stone.

break and received very even temperatures throughout the growing season. The crop was very small this year due to inclement weather during the bloom period. We were lucky to have no real heat events and ten days of cool weather preceding harvest. This allowed this small crop to become balanced in its sugar, acid, and flavor components. The fruit was picked in the last week of Sept through the first week of oct and 24- 25.5 brix and each block was fermented separately in small one ton fermenters, pressed at dryness and transferred to 3 yr. old French oak barrels where they sat, on the lees, for two years before bottling, unfined and unfiltered. . It is a blend of three of our estate vineyards, Henderson Hill, Ishi Pishi Ranch and Kimberly’s.

"The resulting wine is full and rich, with a tremendous mid palate presence. It displays a nose of black pepper, red meat, black fruits and spice. This wine exhibits all of the characters we love about Syrah from this region. It is full, long and spicy with blackberry, dark red cherry, tons of cracked pepper and Christmas spices. We chose five barrels that would display the range of flavors and aromas each soil/site has to offer. "

The rich entry is bolstered by plenty of acidity and finishes with fine tannins.

The wine now offers up lots of Christmas fruitcake, tapenade, black currant, forest floor, incense and camphor characteristics. Although not as luxurious, extravagantly thick and viscous as the 2009, the 2010 will be drinkable early in life and should evolve for 10-15 years."
