This wine floored us from the very first sip! Ancient Peaks sits in the Paso Robles appellation, 22 miles south of the city itself, and just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Here, Read More...
the surrounding peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range act as a gateway between one region to the south that is exceedingly ocean-cooled, and another to the north that is much, much warmer (sometimes downright hot!). When the days heat up in the areas north and east of Margarita Vineyard, the air rises to create a vacuum that pulls marine breezes and fog inland over the peaks, and right through the vineyard. This means the fruit gets ripe, without any “off” flavors, yet the cooling afternoon breezes help the resulting wine to retain freshness and acidity. Renegade is a blend of 62% Syrah, 28% Petit Verdot, and 10% Malbec. The wine opens with extravagant aromas of black fruit, blueberry, vanilla bean and smoked bacon. Flavors of black cherry, black currant and wild raspberry cascade along a plush, mouthfilling texture along with trailing notes of cola, spice and toasty oak. Power yields to elegance on the finish, with clean structure and smooth tannins leading the way.

in the northern part of the Lower Hunter. Planted in 1998, the red brown loam soils over limestone are what give this wine its unique floral lift and character. The relatively vigourous vines are usually crop thinned to around 4 tonnes per Hectare each year which ensures even ripening and produces wonderfully concentrated fruit. 50 cases for US Market."

undercurrents set off by wild spice notes of star anise, rose petal, licorice and fennel. On the palate, this freight train of a wine delivers loads of spiced plum and dark berry fruit, supported by layers of Mexican chocolate, Chinese black tea, and blood orange all framed in spice notes of caraway, toasted vanilla, cigar box and sweet black pepper. The pure, powerful finish stretches on to the horizon supported by great acidity and well developed tannins. Some Paso Robles locals say this is possibly the World's Best Steak Wine!

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - The 2010 Bull by the Horns is also smoking good. A blend of Syrah, Tempranillo and Petit Verdot, it’s loaded with smoky berry fruit, leather, cedar box, pepper and licorice aromas and flavors. This medium to full-bodied beauty has loads of character, excellent overall balance and a finish that pumps on loads of fruit and richness while staying focused and dry. Enjoy it over the coming 5-7 years. Drink now-2020.

These value-priced efforts are made by McPrice Myers and offer ridiculously good drinking for not much money. The wines are, generally speaking, upfront and fruit-loaded, yet always offer solid complexity, good richness and overall very well-made profiles.

The wine possesses a deep black garnet color and a powerhouse nose of black plum, blackberry and black cherry fruits, with floral elements of lavender, candy mint and violets, followed up by notes of black pepper, tarry creosote, cola berry, blood orange and dried cranberry. The dense, rich mouth is dominated by dark plum and blackberry fruit with flavors of Chinese Black tea, anise/black licorice, rose water, red grapefruit and warm crème brulee. The wine's long finish is dominated by fruit, spice and a long graphite and soil note. Great acidity and excellent tannin provide the perfect structure for the biggest Right Hand Man to date!

he fell in love with wine and decided to make his livelihood in the wine business. Hey…can you blame him?!? He has worked with many of the superstars of the Central Coast, including Matt Garretson, Augie Hug and Alta Maria Vineyards. More recently, he has worked alongside one of our best friends, McPrice Myers over at Barrel 27 (what a mentor!), when Edgar isn’t tinkering on his own wines.

Edgar makes wines that knock our socks off! The intensity of these wines are rivaled by few here in the United States and we suggest you check out what Edgar can do! El CabRhone is a play on words, as this is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Rhone varietals (30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre). The wine offers a lovely blackberry and plum core which is surrounded by cinnamon and sweet applewood smoke notes, with orange-peel-candied-in-chocolate elements. Fine tannins and elegant acidity combine with the pure fruit and spices for a long, seamless finish. Only 145 cases were produced!

are ideal for vine stress, restricting crop yields, and making wine that has both intensity and elegance.

A blend of Syrah, Malbec, Mourvedre, and Petite Sirah, the 2012 Eruption is rich and intense. The wine has aromas of fresh blueberries, toasted brioche, black cherries, and mocha, giving way to flavors that are jammy, ripe and unctuous. The palate explodes with blackberries, dark currants, and clove while it layers supple and round coating tannins, making the wine both hedonistic while simultaneously elegant. The texture of this wine is perhaps its most distinguishing trait – mouth-coating with an endless finish. Be certain to have a second bottle on hand, the first won’t last very long.

break and received very even temperatures throughout the growing season. The crop was very small this year due to inclement weather during the bloom period. We were lucky to have no real heat events and ten days of cool weather preceding harvest. This allowed this small crop to become balanced in its sugar, acid, and flavor components. The fruit was picked in the last week of Sept through the first week of oct and 24- 25.5 brix and each block was fermented separately in small one ton fermenters, pressed at dryness and transferred to 3 yr. old French oak barrels where they sat, on the lees, for two years before bottling, unfined and unfiltered. . It is a blend of three of our estate vineyards, Henderson Hill, Ishi Pishi Ranch and Kimberly’s.

"The resulting wine is full and rich, with a tremendous mid palate presence. It displays a nose of black pepper, red meat, black fruits and spice. This wine exhibits all of the characters we love about Syrah from this region. It is full, long and spicy with blackberry, dark red cherry, tons of cracked pepper and Christmas spices. We chose five barrels that would display the range of flavors and aromas each soil/site has to offer. "

was quickly introduced to the intensity and passion associated with fine winemaking. She worked all aspects at the winery, learning how each and every part of the winemaking process affects the final wine. The sustainably-farmed Tempusquet Vineyard in Santa Maria produces grapes of intense quality, and Denise knows just the methods needed to get the vineyard’s best into the bottle. Reminiscent of a red wine from the Northern Rhône, this wonderful bottling shows Syrah’s exotic aromas of cassis, violet, black peppercorn, cherry, cola, mocha, cinnamon and earth. The rich entry is bolstered by plenty of acidity and finishes with fine tannins.

ROBERT PARKER 90-93 POINTS:"Last year the 2010 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde was revealing some green pepper notes, but that problematic issue has been completely resolved. The wine now offers up lots of Christmas fruitcake, tapenade, black currant, forest floor, incense and camphor characteristics. Although not as luxurious, extravagantly thick and viscous as the 2009, the 2010 will be drinkable early in life and should evolve for 10-15 years."

Burgundian Yves Cheron graduated from the Lycée Viticole in Beaune in 1983 and headed south the following year to assume control of the family’s new domaine in the Southern Rhône. Read More...
His father, Denis Cheron, saw the untapped potential in some of the region’s lesser-known appellations back in the early 1960s and left Burgundy to set up shop in this sun-baked sub-region of Provence. Denis purchased a production facility in Vacqueyras and began vinifying wines for several area growers. It wasn’t long before he had earned the trust and friendship of his client-vignerons. In 1982, one of them, the heirless owner of Grand Montmirail in Gigondas, decided to retire and gave Denis right of first refusal to buy his domaine in the appellation’s southeast sector.

Since taking over for his father, Yves has expanded the family’s vineyard holdings into neighboring Beaumes de Venise and Vacqueyras and now produces an impressive line of pure, elegantly-structured, Grenache-based reds without the rustic characteristics so common in wines from this region. All of the domaine’s vines are on gently-sloping hillsides at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range. Yves has also established long-term grape contracts with like-minded growers in Sarrians, Seguret and Violes for another 60 acres, which he uses for his Côtes du Rhône. Yves monitors each parcel and decides when to harvest. He then vinifies this excellent value red in the same manner as his Gigondas and Vacqueyras.
