the exposure of the land, and the microclimates, and pairs the proper rootstocks, clones, and trellising systems appropriately. Then, he takes it one step further, and produces his wines in a style that is in sync with the grapes provided by the vines. The results are tremendous wines that typically receive high scores and lofty praise and demand from both consumers and critics! Even today, wineries and vineyard managers up and down California look to him for his insight and know-how for top quality Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, and Roussanne. This year’s Patrina bottling has earned 94 POINTS from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate!

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "One of the best entry-level wines out there is John's 2012 Syrah Patrina, and it competes with many top cuvees. All Syrah in 2012 and showing the house style perfectly, it has a saturated inky color to go with a forward, sexy, meaty and full-bodied array of creme de cassis, licorice, chocolate and licorice. Showing how good 2012 was for this estate, it's a rock-star wine to enjoy while you wait for his 2010s and 2011s to come around."

ANCIENT PEAKS 12 RENEGADE

This wine floored us from the very first sip! Ancient Peaks sits in the Paso Robles appellation, 22 miles south of the city itself, and just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Here, Read More...
the surrounding peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range act as a gateway between one region to the south that is exceedingly ocean-cooled, and another to the north that is much, much warmer (sometimes downright hot!). When the days heat up in the areas north and east of Margarita Vineyard, the air rises to create a vacuum that pulls marine breezes and fog inland over the peaks, and right through the vineyard. This means the fruit gets ripe, without any “off” flavors, yet the cooling afternoon breezes help the resulting wine to retain freshness and acidity. Renegade is a blend of 62% Syrah, 28% Petit Verdot, and 10% Malbec. The wine opens with extravagant aromas of black fruit, blueberry, vanilla bean and smoked bacon. Flavors of black cherry, black currant and wild raspberry cascade along a plush, mouthfilling texture along with trailing notes of cola, spice and toasty oak. Power yields to elegance on the finish, with clean structure and smooth tannins leading the way.

The wines are, generally speaking, upfront and fruit-loaded, yet always offer solid complexity, good richness and overall very well-made profiles.

"Showing complex and slightly exotic aromas and flavors of plum pit, bramble, sweet spice and pepper, the 2010 Syrah Head Honcho hits the palate with a fruit-loaded, medium to full-bodied texture that’s reined in by clean acidity and slightly firm, edgy tannin. An outstanding bottle of wine, it should evolve nicely for another year or two and hold through 2020. Drink now-2020."

he fell in love with wine and decided to make his livelihood in the wine business. Hey…can you blame him?!? He has worked with many of the superstars of the Central Coast, including Matt Garretson, Augie Hug and Alta Maria Vineyards. More recently, he has worked alongside one of our best friends, McPrice Myers over at Barrel 27 (what a mentor!), when Edgar isn’t tinkering on his own wines.

Edgar makes wines that knock our socks off! The intensity of these wines are rivaled by few here in the United States and we suggest you check out what Edgar can do! El CabRhone is a play on words, as this is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Rhone varietals (30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre). The wine offers a lovely blackberry and plum core which is surrounded by cinnamon and sweet applewood smoke notes, with orange-peel-candied-in-chocolate elements. Fine tannins and elegant acidity combine with the pure fruit and spices for a long, seamless finish. Only 145 cases were produced!

are ideal for vine stress, restricting crop yields, and making wine that has both intensity and elegance.

A blend of Syrah, Malbec, Mourvedre, and Petite Sirah, the 2013 Eruption is rich and intense. The wine has aromas of fresh blueberries, toasted brioche, black cherries, and mocha, giving way to flavors that are jammy, ripe and unctuous. The palate explodes with blackberries, dark currants, and clove while it layers supple and round coating tannins, making the wine both hedonistic while simultaneously elegant. The texture of this wine is perhaps its most distinguishing trait – mouth-coating with an endless finish. Be certain to have a second bottle on hand, the first won’t last very long.

Reminiscent of a red wine from the Northern Rhône, this wonderful bottling shows Syrah’s exotic aromas of cassis, violet, black peppercorn, cherry, cola, mocha, cinnamon and earth. The rich entry is bolstered by plenty of acidity and finishes with fine tannins.
