The nose is full of the fresh berries and spice synonymous with McLaren Vale, with a slight eucalypt lift. Secondary characters of sarsaparilla, cinnamon and clove which are expressed more completely as the wine opens up. The palate is mouth coating and plush with red and purple fruits mingling with orange peel and earth. There is a welcomed kick of five spice on the back palate. The lifted and fine fruit tannins provide structure and pull the wine together nicely. The Footbolt Shiraz has proven to cellar well for at least a decade.

It comes from Seven spectacular vineyards and the hands of Seven people. Predominantly from Syrah, the Seventh most widely planted grape in the world, it is more than just Syrah, it represents an apogee of their goals as winemakers; they help tend the finest vineyards and hand pick the best barrels for the wine, they pour all their knowledge and labor into its elevage, and they patiently wait for two years until the wine was perfectly ready for bottling.

Explosive aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, blueberry and grape jam, framed by deeply pitched notes of asphalt, peat, bitter walnut, and pine, along with animal scents of smoked and dried meats and rare beef. In the mouth the wine is full bodied and bracing, with blackberry fruits, creosote and dried herbs lifted by a solid spine of brisk acids and large scaled fruit and wood spiced tannins, promising a long life ahead in the bottle. Dark purple/black in color, this Syrah is an aromatic kaleidoscope; floral, macerated cherry, black raspberry then dusty cocoa, fresh herbs, citrus zest, smoked meat, a whiff of pepper. Chewy, mouthfilling palate but never heavy or cumbersome. Cassis, blackberry, white pepper, anise, tobacco and dark chocolate. Rich, full tannins bring focus and definition. Great purity and dimension - packed with flavor. Coats the palate then a gripping savory finish. Brilliant! Decant for an hour in its youth and drink between 2011 and 2020.

and blueberry. Full-bodied on the palate, it has a glossy texture, layered flavors bordering on opulent, incipient complexity, plenty of depth and richness, and a long, fruit-filled finish. It can be enjoyed now but will drink well for a decade. This is the first vintage of this wine produced and a first in the US as well. The Ashmeads decided to dedicate a special estate Shiraz to the memory of their beloved father Neil Ashmead. Early on Neil conducted the family business on the road and had an affection for fast cars as well. Hence the name “Grand Tourer Shiraz” was given to the wine. It’s seamless from start to finish and very apparent that a good deal of love and hard work went into producing it. We are very grateful to offer this special wine to our Hi-Time Customers.

and French oak. It is an impressive wine endowed with gorgeous purity in its fruit and a striking, opulent personality. In 2009 the blend is 65% Syrah, 12% Petite Sirah, 12% Mourvedre, 7% Grenache and 4% Zinfandel, but it is the Syrah character that speaks most loudly. I especially like the textural richness and volume here. The wine was fermented in concrete, stainless steel tanks and new French oak barrels, and spent 22 months in French oak, 42% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019."

which are planted on the Westside of Paso Robles!

Veracity is one Epoch's original three wines, and is making a return to the line-up after debuting in 2007. It’s a blend of almost equal parts Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah. Style-wise it falls on the more feminine end of our spectrum, and the 2009 version is truly elegant.

WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "A fresh, vibrant red, featuring rich boysenberry, mineral and cedar notes with hints of red and black licorice. Well-proportioned and sleek, ending with a complex burst of ripe dark fruit. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Drink now through 2022."

ROBERT M. PARKER, JR.'S THE WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "The 2009 Veracity is 36% Grenache, 32% Mourvedre and 32% Syrah. A sweet, floral bouquet melds into an expressive core of fruit in this gorgeous wine. At once expansive yet restrained, the Veracity shows striking purity and tons of class. Rose petals and sweet spices linger on the attractive finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. "

which are planted on the Westside of Paso Robles!

Located on the Westside of Paso Robles, the Paderewski Vineyard is a patchwork of different vineyard blocks matched to their specific soil and climate types. The 2009 Estate Blend captures that patchwork in a bottle. Predominantly Syrah, but combined with almost every other red variety from the estate, this wine gives a sweeping glimpse of the vineyard and Jordan's winemaking practices. As a true field blend (56% Syrah, 26% Grenache, 11% Mourvedre, and 7% Tempranillo), the 2009 Estate Blend combines 15 different harvest picks.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "Epoch’s 2010 Estate Blend possesses gorgeous inner tension and energy. Dark fruit, licorice and spices flow through to the imposing finish. The Estate Blend is one of the entry-level wines at Epoch, but it has all of the qualitites of the higher-end bottlings, and costs less. This is a great introduction to the Epoch house style. The blend is 56% Syrah, 26% Grenache, 11% Mourvedre and 7% Tempranillo. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016."

inception over the several hours I spent at the winery in June. Winemaker Jordan Fiorentini is trying to give each of the Epoch wines a clearer identity, something that has been missing in previous vintages, but that isn’t all that surprising given the very young age of the estate’s vineyards. With each passing year the wines are stronger. It seems quite obvious the best is yet to come. I tasted the 2010 Estate White, Veracity, Sensibility, Zinfandel and Estate Blend from bottle, and the rest of the 2010 reds in their final blends, from barrel. All of these wines are made from Epoch’s Paderweski Vineyard, which also supplies fruit to a small number of other artisan producers.

"One of the most compelling wines in the Epoch lineup is the 2010 Block B, a 100% Syrah taken from a single block within the estate’s Paderewski vineyard. Today, the 2010 comes across as big, massive and super-concentrated, with the new oak tannins dominating much of the wine’s overall balance. This is a decidedly huge, explosive style of Syrah. My impression is that the new oak is too prominent. This is a classic example of typical Paso fruit that is so rich on its own it basically needs nothing else. I found the 2011, which I tasted from barrel, more interesting as well as nuanced. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017."

The soils in the vineyards are composed partly of rubble which has eroded from the Andes mountains and deposited by glaciers and wind, and partly of alluvial sand and silt deposited by the river. while stony, gravely soils are regarded as poor for most crops, their excellent drainage qualities make them perfect for wine growing.

ROBERT PARKER - "The 2009 Carmenere Syrah Reserva is sourced from three different vineyards in the Elqui Valley and 40% of the crop is aged in barrel for six months. It offers black currant and bilberry fruit on the well-defined, if rather one-dimensional nose. The palate is medium-bodied with peppery black fruit and a pinched, but crisp black cherry and cassis finish. Drink now-2015"

Very crisp and rich in the mouth with medium-firm velvety tannins and tons of fleshy fruit, it displays opulent layers of warm berries and spice in the finish. does this mean?...It means you have one of the more talented winemakers from Paso Robles and Santa Barbara bringing some of the most exciting wines! Now, anybody will tell you that 2010 was not an easy vintage for the Central Coast, but as we tasted Russell's wines, it was obvious that he has come through with another rockin' set of releases!

Russell has historically made a Larner Syrah bottling and a Larner Grenache bottling, but in 2010, the blend was simply better than either of the two wines alone. And hey, isn't that what you would want...the best wine possible? Well here it is!

A blend of 65% Syrah and 35% Grenache from Stephan Larner's vineyard in Santa Barbara's Ballar Canyon, this wine as a brilliant garnet color. A wonderful bouquet of charcoal, boysenberry, vanilla, and raspberry leap from the glass. The flavors are initially quite tight, but unfold to give minerals, bright red fruits, and a silky texture. There is good acid on this wine, which keeps it fresh.
