This wine floored us from the very first sip! Ancient Peaks sits in the Paso Robles appellation, 22 miles south of the city itself, and just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Here, Read More...
the surrounding peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range act as a gateway between one region to the south that is exceedingly ocean-cooled, and another to the north that is much, much warmer (sometimes downright hot!). When the days heat up in the areas north and east of Margarita Vineyard, the air rises to create a vacuum that pulls marine breezes and fog inland over the peaks, and right through the vineyard. This means the fruit gets ripe, without any “off” flavors, yet the cooling afternoon breezes help the resulting wine to retain freshness and acidity. Renegade is a blend of 62% Syrah, 28% Petit Verdot, and 10% Malbec. The wine opens with extravagant aromas of black fruit, blueberry, vanilla bean and smoked bacon. Flavors of black cherry, black currant and wild raspberry cascade along a plush, mouthfilling texture along with trailing notes of cola, spice and toasty oak. Power yields to elegance on the finish, with clean structure and smooth tannins leading the way.

in the northern part of the Lower Hunter. Planted in 1998, the red brown loam soils over limestone are what give this wine its unique floral lift and character. The relatively vigourous vines are usually crop thinned to around 4 tonnes per Hectare each year which ensures even ripening and produces wonderfully concentrated fruit. 50 cases for US Market."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "These value-priced efforts are made by McPrice Myers and offer ridiculously good drinking for not much money. Read More...
The wines are, generally speaking, upfront and fruit-loaded, yet always offer solid complexity, good richness and overall very well-made profiles.

"Showing complex and slightly exotic aromas and flavors of plum pit, bramble, sweet spice and pepper, the 2010 Syrah Head Honcho hits the palate with a fruit-loaded, medium to full-bodied texture that’s reined in by clean acidity and slightly firm, edgy tannin. An outstanding bottle of wine, it should evolve nicely for another year or two and hold through 2020. Drink now-2020."

As if their white wasn’t good enough (yeah...right!), if the “High on the Hog” was the left hand, then why shouldn’t they have a red as their “Right Hand”? Winemaker Mac Myers (owner/Read More...
winemaker for McPrice Myers) contributes a little wine from his own project in order to make the Barrel 27 Syrah. So in a sense, here you get a wine that may retail for twice the price! This has been a tremendous sell in the past, so you can expect how incredible the highly-acclaimed 2008 is!

The wine possesses a deep black garnet color and a powerhouse nose of black plum, blackberry and black cherry fruits, with floral elements of lavender, candy mint and violets, followed up by notes of black pepper, tarry creosote, cola berry, blood orange and dried cranberry. The dense, rich mouth is dominated by dark plum and blackberry fruit with flavors of Chinese Black tea, anise/black licorice, rose water, red grapefruit and warm crème brulee. The wine's long finish is dominated by fruit, spice and a long graphite and soil note. Great acidity and excellent tannin provide the perfect structure for the biggest Right Hand Man to date!

he fell in love with wine and decided to make his livelihood in the wine business. Hey…can you blame him?!? He has worked with many of the superstars of the Central Coast, including Matt Garretson, Augie Hug and Alta Maria Vineyards. More recently, he has worked alongside one of our best friends, McPrice Myers over at Barrel 27 (what a mentor!), when Edgar isn’t tinkering on his own wines.

Edgar makes wines that knock our socks off! The intensity of these wines are rivaled by few here in the United States and we suggest you check out what Edgar can do! El CabRhone is a play on words, as this is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Rhone varietals (30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre). The wine offers a lovely blackberry and plum core which is surrounded by cinnamon and sweet applewood smoke notes, with orange-peel-candied-in-chocolate elements. Fine tannins and elegant acidity combine with the pure fruit and spices for a long, seamless finish. Only 145 cases were produced!

are ideal for vine stress, restricting crop yields, and making wine that has both intensity and elegance.

A blend of Syrah, Malbec, Mourvedre, and Petite Sirah, the 2013 Eruption is rich and intense. The wine has aromas of fresh blueberries, toasted brioche, black cherries, and mocha, giving way to flavors that are jammy, ripe and unctuous. The palate explodes with blackberries, dark currants, and clove while it layers supple and round coating tannins, making the wine both hedonistic while simultaneously elegant. The texture of this wine is perhaps its most distinguishing trait – mouth-coating with an endless finish. Be certain to have a second bottle on hand, the first won’t last very long.

was quickly introduced to the intensity and passion associated with fine winemaking. She worked all aspects at the winery, learning how each and every part of the winemaking process affects the final wine. The sustainably-farmed Tempusquet Vineyard in Santa Maria produces grapes of intense quality, and Denise knows just the methods needed to get the vineyard’s best into the bottle. Reminiscent of a red wine from the Northern Rhône, this wonderful bottling shows Syrah’s exotic aromas of cassis, violet, black peppercorn, cherry, cola, mocha, cinnamon and earth. The rich entry is bolstered by plenty of acidity and finishes with fine tannins.

stunningly long personality. This is a superb quasi-modern style of Cornas that should be ready to drink in 2-3 years, and last for over a decade.

Proprietor Matthieu Barret is another member of Cornas’ younger generation of producers who have embraced the use of smaller barrels as well as more sanitary vinification techniques. The results are wines imbued with good purity, sweeter tannins, appellation typicity, and more approachable styles that retain 15 or more years of aging potential."

and flavors. Dense, full-bodied and concentrated, with a hedonistic, voluptuous slant, drink it over the coming 6-7 years.

Another brilliantly run estate in the Northern Rhône, Eric and Joel Durand have made rich, concentrated and textured 2012s that show the vintage nicely. These should drink nicely on release yet evolve gracefully. Their 2013s follow suit, with their top cuvee, the Cornas Confidence, being the only wine that will really require cellaring to become approachable. The style here is quasi-modern, with plenty of destemming and moderate new oak, but the wines all hold onto plenty of Cornas character. They're highly recommended."

WINE SPECTATOR 91 POINTS: "Offers a solidly grippy feel, with cocoa powder, briar and dark tobacco notes supporting a dense core of black currant, fig and blackberry fruit. Sweet tapenade and tar notes lurk on the finish. Should stretch out in the cellar. Drink now through 2020. 500 cases made." –JM

ROBERT PARKER 90-93 POINTS:"Last year the 2010 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde was revealing some green pepper notes, but that problematic issue has been completely resolved. The wine now offers up lots of Christmas fruitcake, tapenade, black currant, forest floor, incense and camphor characteristics. Although not as luxurious, extravagantly thick and viscous as the 2009, the 2010 will be drinkable early in life and should evolve for 10-15 years."

Resinous juniper and wood ash also enhance the aromatic palette and lengthen the perception. The palate is a real treat: soft and flattering.
