Although A Coroa is a family-run winery, it has current, up-todate wine-making equipment. Their philosophy is simple and one that we've seen from many of our favorite winemakers: the vineyard, Read More...
the grapes, are the primary key to making good wine. Production centers on thorough and thoughtful processing of the grape, using the best technology and respecting the heterogeneity of the land. Oenologist Ángel Sanchez Cuesta, educated at the Requena Viticulture and Oenology School (Valencia), has been working at his profession in Valdeorras County for more than 17 years. An absolute connoisseur of viticulture and the Valdeorras grape varietials he is one of the pioneers of monovarietal winemaking with Godello and Mencia, and probably one of those who best knows the potential of vitiviniculture in this area. And the proof is in the bottle.

The nose is incredibly expressive: lanolin and sweet floral essences dance with river water, mixed melon scents and lemon grass, with just a touch of dairy cream in the background. The palate starts with sweet fruit in the fore, uplifted by brisk acidity; the mid-palate brings in a layer of richness, creaminess from months of lees stirring, along with a variety of stone fruit flavors, nectarine, white peach. The finish is elongated and tasty as this wine Over delivers for its price point. Really fantastic wine.

for its depth, this red delivers plum, currant, licorice, tar and mineral flavors that are rich and focused. The firm tannins are well-integrated, kept lively by fresh acidity. Smoke and floral notes mingle on the long finish. Drink now through 2031. 30,000 cases made."

The Seleccion Especial from Abadia Retuerta is back at Hi Time. This wine quickly disappeared after being named #15 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2015 and we are thrilled to have it back in stock. This is a serious, well-balanced wine with a rich bouquet and deep fruit flavors. This fantastic red blend is from Sardon de Duero, a wine-growing area in northern Spain west of Ribera del Duero. It is part of the prestigious 'Golden Mile' (La Milla de Oro) of wineries located along the Duero River in the autonomous community of Castilla y Leon. La Milla de Oro has a special microclimate and is home to some of Spain's most renowned wineries including Vega Sicilia, Dominio de Pingus and Bodegas Mauro.

The Special Selection is produced from the best grapes from each of Abadia's vineyards. It combines the richness of Tempranillo with the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and gains additional complexity from the addition of Syrah and Merlot. This delicious wine is an outstanding value and over-delivers for the price!

2011 it ripened perfectly and also reveals showy, dark aromas of graphite, black pepper and smoke. It does have some aromas of dark chocolate and smoke, but the oak is perfectly integrated and makes those aromas of paprika come out and provide freshness. The palate is medium to full-bodied with classical dusty, grainy tannins, good acidity, and very good balance, a big, powerful and ripe Cabernet which really benefitted from the 2011 growing season. This has to be one of the top Cabernet Sauvignons produced in Spain. Drink 2015-2020."

with sand; it is a relatively warm soil that provides good homogeneous ripeness of the grapes, vintage after vintage. As with all of the single vineyards, it fermented with indigenous yeasts and went through malolactic fermentation in brad new French oak barrels, where it had an upbringing of 18 months before bottling after a clarification with egg whites. I found the character of orange peel that I frequently saw in the Ribera del Duero reds in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with some rusticity and a little dustiness, with character. There are fine-grained tannins, good balance and a dusty texture that fills your mouth. It has very good balance and it will age nicely. 5,700 bottles, 275 magnums and 18 double magnums were filled from the 22 barrels in one single lot on June 17th 2014."

quite powerful and concentrated, with slightly rustic aromas of tree bark, spices and faint flowers intermixed with notes of dark cherries and flavors of black cherries and licorice, with abundant, fine-grained tannins. A powerful red with balance to age. Drink 2014-2018."

STEPHEN TANZER'S INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLARS 92 POINTS - "(70% Samso and 30% Garnacha): Opaque ruby color and highly aromatic scents of blackberry and blueberry liquer, licorice and a hint of lavender. Enters lush and rich on the palate, with impressive freshness, offering flavors of bitter cherry and dark berry liqueur. Finishes long and sweet, with floral note clinging tenaciously."

This is a newer discovery and we are happy to be able to bring this fabulous wine into the store! Acustic Celler is the project of Albert Jané who grew up helping tend vineyards and learning the craft of winemaking from his family. He worked there until he was 33 years old when he fell in love with the rugged landscape and ancient vineyards of Montsant, an area of north-eastern Spain which surrounds Priorat. Albert left the security of the family business to start his own adventure, Acústic Celler. He chose the winery name to reflect his desire to keep his wines, “unplugged.” In other words, to let the terroir and grapes speak for themselves. The old vines provide an amazing nectar of fruit, which is fermented using natural yeasts. Cautious use of barrel-aging helps the wines achieve maturity without hiding the character of the grapes from which they have been made. The flavors of this wine dance on the tongue and somehow manage to achieve richness and lightness at once. Bravo!

Officially it can only be categorized as an Amontillado, but Manzanilla Amontillada would have been more correct. In any case it spent around 5 years maturing as a Manzanilla (under flor). Read More...
It then received a further fortification (which kills the flor) and matured another 5 years in the oxidative way. Alexander Jules stresses the minimal processing of the wine (fining, filtering, stabilizing, etc.). The wines are essentially bottled en rama, with just a cellulose plate filtration at time of saca and a 1 micron filtration at time of bottling. None of the wines are fined, cold stabilized or exposed to active carbon.
Nose: rather soft and feminine. Still close to a Manzanilla Pasada, with chamomile and baker’s yeast. Subtle hints of bacon fat and stables. Dried porcini. Sweeter toffee notes too, even subtle pastry notes. Whiffs of yellow flowers and orange peel. On the nose it doesn’t have the tangy profile or the nuttiness of a true Amontillado.
Mouth: more Amontillado elements now, but again quite subtle, with an emphasis on elegance. There’s a pleasant acidity of lemons and oranges. No sharpness whatsoever, but the subdued acidity is very prominent. Soft hints of toffee and a gentle zesty bitterness. Evolves on briny notes with just a hint of apples in the finish.

matured for 16 months in new Nevers barrels (that’s a difference with Vega Sicilia; for Alion all wood is French). It is an exuberant, ripe Alion, with hedonist’s aromas that jump out of the glass. Winemaker Javier Ausas tells me he likes the wines when they are young and showy like this one. It is indeed a showy vintage, with aromas of violets, molasses, cereals and a whiff of malt whisky. We tasted the wine a little warm, but that does not benefit the wine, which should be served at 15-16 C and allowed to warm up and open up in the glass. It’s also quite smoky, with reminiscences of very good barrels, black aromas, violets, black olives and fresh plums. The palate is tannic with lactic and warm flavors. This is a very exuberant, showy vintage for Alion, and here I tend to agree with Ausas: even though this has plenty of stuffing to age I’d drink it young in its exuberant phase. 290,000 bottles produced. Drink now-2019."

Alto Moncayo. Big, full-bodied and loaded with ripe, opulent fruit. Surprisingly approachable upon release due to the smooth tannin structure, it is also capable of aging for many years due to the depth and concentration. This wine always garners high praise from critics with Robert Parker twice awarding perfect 100 point scores for Moncayo! The new release has not been rated yet, but based on our tasting, we believe they will continue to receive accolades from the wine press.

Alto Moncayo is a joint project between Jorge Ordoñez and renowned Australian winemaker, Chris Ringland. The old vine Grenache vines produce tiny yields of intense, flavorful fruit. The wine is subsequently aged in oak for approximately 1 ½ years, giving additional complexity and dding delicious notes of cocoa, vanilla and baking spice.

The Bodegas Alto Moncayo, along with its sister property El Nido in Jumilla, combines the talents of local growers and winemakers with Australia’s super-star winemaker, Chris Ringland. The partnership has the ability to cherry-pick the best parcels of old vine Garnacha from Borsao’s extensive holdings in the region, nearly 2,000 acres.

The Garnacha grape is one of the varieties that best expresses its terroir. Thus, the Garnacha of Alto Moncayo is different from the rest of the Campo de Borja Denominación de Origen (DO) area. This is due to the very strict selection made from the vineyards, the type of soil in which they are grown, the microclimate and the age of the vines. As these vines are very old, the strains are very well-balanced, with a very deep root system.

All of these factors, together with the location of the vineyards, between 500m and 800m in height, where the maturity is very slow, leads to wines of great fruitiness and minerality. In the mouth they are rich and fulsome, with pleasant, mature tannins and highly aromatic persistence.

The native Garnacha grapes of Alto Moncayo, together with the microclimate to which they are subjected, the type of soil, the orientation and rigorous handling combine to make the authentic native terroir, producing wines which are highly distinctive and unique in the world.

While not getting near the attention given the famed dessert wines of France and Germany, some of the world’s most fabulous sweet wines are produced in an obscure corner of Spain’s Andalusia province-Montilla-Moriles. The district is home to Bodegas Alvear creators of Solera 1927 a mind boggling nectar that must be tasted to be believed. Throughout its 284-year long history, the Alvear family has managed to combine their eight generations of experience and long-term thinking to create Solera 1927. The PX (Pedro-Ximenez) grapes for this bottling are generally planted on exceptionally chalky soils that produce low yields (1.2 tons/acre) and optimally ripe grapes. Sugars are further concentrated by drying the berries on straw mats under the sun. A dense must is then obtained from the crushed raisins to produce a viscous “raisin juice”. The unique aging process of the Solera System, which in this case was inaugurated in 1927, ensures an intriguing mix of youthful and long aged flavors, as well as an amazingly high level of quality from bottling to bottling. Robert Parker awarded a prior incarnation this PX 96 points a few years back, and he has now awarded this edition a staggering 98 Points. Now that’s consistency! When one factors in its long aging along with the cost of fruit and the myriad of man-hours involved in maintaining the Solera, this under-the-radar find represents one of the most fantastic values in all the world of wine. In addition to a wide array of desserts, Solera 1927 is marvelous with blue-veined chesses and toasted almonds.
