vineyard called Zaconia, this wine was first developed by the estate's founder to emulate the great white wines of Graves. Four years in American Oak with a nose of quince, beeswax, verbena and honeycomb and a palate that manages both to be outstandingly decadent yet reassuringly fresh; almonds, agrumes and apricots jump from the glass, you will be especially impressed by the poise and power of the finish.

Telmo Rodriguez use the masculine name of Garnacha) and the rest Mazuelo and Graciano. It is aged for three years in used 225-liter American oak barrels (the only ones they use), racked twice per year, fined with egg whites and bottled unfiltered. It has a dark ruby color with an orange-brownish rim and a nose of red fruit, citric notes of candied orange skin and fresh blood orange, white pepper, balsamic herbs and some raw meat aromas. The palate is very polished, with balsamic flavors, sweet tannins and good acidity. A good traditional Rioja. Drink: 2013-2021."

The Canary Islands There is a Spanish region so far off the beaten path that it's a stretch to think of it as Spain at all – but even if it lies off the coast of west Africa, the Canary Read More...
Island archipelago is part of the Spanish Republic. A trickle of these unusual wines is entering the market here and worth seeking out, no matter what the season. The Canary Islands' dramatic volcanic formations support flora and fauna that might rival the Galapagos in wonder and stark weirdness. And its viticulture, like the vineyards on the island Lanzarote, is some of the most visually stunning on Earth. Planted in deep black sand, the vines are protected from the wind by stone walls built between vine rows; in some cases, vignerons build a semicircular cairn for each vine, where natural forces create a virtual crater for each wind-bitten vine, a vinous moonscape unlike any other vine region in the world. And the wines? In such a warm climate, the whites, made from the heat-resistant Malvasia and the indigenous Diego, are deeply colored, mineral and exotic. Perhaps it's a stretch to think of these as spring wines, but they're simply too interesting not to mention. The Malvasia Seco from La Bermejos on the island of Lanzarote gives off a lovely citrus oil scent to complement rich fig and pear skin flavors.

aged in stainless steel with partial carbonic maceration. On the nose, there are brambly blackberries and candied apple. Upon tasting, this is a medium-bodied wine with medium acidity and pomegranate, morello cherry, violets, and leaves you with an earthy finish. This delectable wine would be compatible with stuffing, while still not overpowering the turkey, and would go well with ham.

polished bouquet with dark cherries, sloes and fresh fig. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good acidity and impressive structure towards the finish that has a convincing sense of symmetry and focus. This is a very natural, sophisticated Crianza meriting aging. Drink 2014-2020.

Bodegas Luis Canas owns 90 hectares of vine. This is augmented by 200 hectares under long-term contract, dispersed over 815 parcels. These wines were imbued with wonderful purity and sophistication, managing to tread that fine line between modernism and classicism and embracing the virtues from the two. Moreover, I found that these wines evoked a sense of place, something that not all Rioja wines do. These all comes highly recommended."

Luis Canas wines are not news in Spain, but they only cracked the market in the U.S. 3-4 years ago. We're big fans. The Gran Riserva Rioja was part of our Tempranillo cover last year and the beautiful "Seleccion de la Familia" Reserva is a staple in the Rioja section when it's available. The newly arrived 2009 Crianza is stellar--showing brightness, depth, and purity. The 92 point review from the Wine Advocate will tell you all you need to know about Canas. The notes about balance between a "modern style" and "tradition" are right on.

Nuno Oloroso (80%) and San Emilio PX which is also about 12 years old, blended and aged together for a further three years in a special, slightly warmer part of the winery which replicates perhaps the character of the wines that traveled by boat to India or elsewhere. Mahogany colored with a green-amber edge, it has the nose of an old wine with notes of antique shop, wax, shoe polish, noble wood, and a touch of spices, dates and prunes, all of it very well integrated. The palate is spicy and sweet (it has 130 grams of sugar) again very integrated. At this price level it represents good value and should go well with cheeses. Drink 2013-2020."

This Fino was matured at Bodega del Drago, which is located less than one mile from La Puntilla beach. It was drawn from two butts out of a solera of 347 and was bottled without filtration. The Puerto is perhaps the most nuanced of Lustau's "En Rama" bottlings as it exhibits pronounced mineral and toasted almond notes that lead into a tautly drawn, lingering finish.
