and figs. A rich, sweet, but complex cream, with a host of coffee, chocolate, orange, date, and fig flavors on the finish."

Emilio Lustau Tasting Notes Still made in the traditional way and at the original strength - one of the few examples left of what cream sherry should taste like. Deep amber in colour with the taste of sweet raisins, dates and figs. Rich sweet ripe fruit that lingers smoothly and seductively. A powerful balance of sweetness, richness and maturity. As a dessert wine or as a digéstif at the end of a meal. Serve at cool room temperature.

Nuno Oloroso (80%) and San Emilio PX which is also about 12 years old, blended and aged together for a further three years in a special, slightly warmer part of the winery which replicates perhaps the character of the wines that traveled by boat to India or elsewhere. Mahogany colored with a green-amber edge, it has the nose of an old wine with notes of antique shop, wax, shoe polish, noble wood, and a touch of spices, dates and prunes, all of it very well integrated. The palate is spicy and sweet (it has 130 grams of sugar) again very integrated. At this price level it represents good value and should go well with cheeses. Drink 2013-2020."

The building, constructed in 1862, sits at N° 53 Calle de los Arcos in the geographic center of town. The wine was drawn from two butts out of a solera of 708 and was bottled without filtration. The Fino de Jerez develops extra textural interest in the mouth with resin and bitter orange notes and a nice, sappy tang on the finish.

This Fino was matured at Bodega del Drago, which is located less than one mile from La Puntilla beach. It was drawn from two butts out of a solera of 347 and was bottled without filtration. The Puerto is perhaps the most nuanced of Lustau's "En Rama" bottlings as it exhibits pronounced mineral and toasted almond notes that lead into a tautly drawn, lingering finish.

Dense with licorice and some prune flavors, it is spicy and balsamic as well as tighter and more backward. They told me they don't like green aromas, but they also dislike notes of liqueur. Concentrated but managing to keep the freshness, it is a clean, powerful and modern red in need of a little bottle aging to polish its tannins. It will be fascinating to see how these wines develop in bottle, and how the Rioja character, the vineyards, come through with time. 40,000 bottles produced. Drink 2016-2025.

in the world of Spanish wine, has been the head of the technical team at Vega Sicilia for several decades.

Mauro is a wine that represents not only a terroir but also a way to understand wines. After a meticulous selection of the grapes, it is lodged into deposits, separating the grape batches by varieties, estates and production areas.

20% of the barrels are renewed annually. 75% of the barrels are made of French oak and the other 25% of American oak, all of them of extra tight grained wood and dried for at least 3 years. The Mauro was aged for 16 months in Allier and Never French oak barrels and in American oak barrels, all of them with different toastings.

In this 2011 Mauro, you’ll find black cherries, herbs, licorice, chocolate and spices. Very smooth, full and round. Creamy, but with well-integrated acid.

that is “semi-new” (i.e. a new barrel that is “broken in” with a wine beforehand). It has an unashamedly opulent bouquet of primal, ripe, boysenberry, mulberry, dark chocolate and crushed violets that blossom with aeration. The palate is full-bodied with crisp acidity cutting through the pure blackberry and cassis fruit. It has wonderful focus and intensity, though the finish demonstrates convincing composure. This is an outstanding Gran Reserva whose silky texture will instantly win you over. Drink 2013-2030+"

Muga is one of the great names in Spanish winemaking and has been a cornerstone of our Spanish wine selections for at least 20 years. The “Prado Enea” is the longest lived and most traditional bottling from Muga—always an impressively balanced wine showing finesse and power; floral delicacy and deep black fruit. Neal Martin from The Wine Advocate recently visited the Bodega and tasted four vintages from four decades—the 1970, 1981, 1991, and 2005. As we’d expect, the reviews were filled with superlatives (and an average score of 94.5pts). We know these wines are great now, but what happens to a wine you suspect can age a long time, 20, 30, or 40 years down the road? The answer is in the series of reviews from the August Wine Advocate: “vibrant,” “amazingly fresh and vital,” “a complex, cerebral bouquet,” “a complex array of flavors,”... Of course we recognize most of us won’t age a wine 30 or 40 years, but the 2005 vintage is truly special in Rioja and this favorite bottling Muga is exemplary. It is one of those “now and forever” kind of wines. With a decanter and 20 minutes of patience you will see the many layers of greatness of the 2005 Muga.

modern profile than the Reserva or the Castillo de Ygay. It’s a blend of 74% Tempranillo, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Graciano from a single vineyard called Canaja, planted in 1950, which yields one kilo of grapes per plant. The different varieties are fermented separately in stainless steel and oak vats. The wine carries out its malolactic fermentation in new Allier barrels, where it matures for a further twenty months, but the varieties are kept separated for the first 13-14 months. The wine is left to settle in concrete vats for six months before being bottled. It displays a dark ruby color, a serious nose with some balsamic, minty notes, and aromas of licorice, cedar wood, smoke, cigar ash, a mixture of red and black fruit, and spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon. It feels more Atlantic than Mediterranean. The palate is round and elegant, with great acidity, amulti-dimensional character, and a very long finish. 22,500 bottles were filled. Drink 2014-2028. "
