that are pure class. The palate is fresh and zesty with a crisp seam of acidity; bright apple-y fruit and a touch of spice towards the poised finish. If I were to quibble, the palate does not quite match the aromatics, but it remains an excellent Albarino. Drink now-2018."
Bodega Granbazan is located in Tremoedo, in the Salnes sub-zone of Rias Baixas. Owners Manuel Otero and his nephew Jesus Alvarez own 17 hectares of 30-year-old Albarino vines that is supplemented by long-term contract with growers. Grapes are hand-picked, de-stemmed and undergo six to eight hours of cold maceration, while fermentation is undertaken in concrete and steel tanks using both natural and cultured yeast. I adore their evocative, rather old-fashioned labels with their maritime-themed drawings and equally, more importantly, I loved the wines inside. These are pure Rias Baixas Albarinos that brim over with crispness, flavor and authenticity.

the Lecanda family, who were pioneers of the region and in fact the first owners of Vega Sicilia. The estate was purchased by current owner Carlos del Rios in the early 1990s. His wine background is in fact rooted south in Jerez, as his family has been in the sherry business for decades with Tio Pepe (and now the larger Gonzalez-Byass parent company). Carlos built the current winery in 1991 with French architect Philippe Mazieres who designed the spectacular cellars for Château Margaux and Château D’Yquem. Peter Sissick (of Pingus fame – which came after Monasterio) has served as consulting winemaker since the estate’s beginning with local winemaker Carlos de la Fuente. Vineyards are planted primarily to Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and specifically to three types that are based on very old selections. The vineyards are situated on limestone soils and at a south facing exposure.
TASTING NOTES: Peter Sisseck of Pingus fame makes the wines of Hacienda Monasterio. Sourced from estate vineyards, it's a blend of 75% Tinto Fino and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec aged for 17 months in 40% new French oak. Deep crimson colored, it offers up an enticing bouquet of mineral, lightly simmered créme de cassis and compote of black cherry. Savory, ripe, and already complex on the palate.

doses of sulfurose (before bottling, in order to sell wine all over the world). The basis of our work is both a respect for nature and for our autochthonous qualities. For aging we only use large barrels (500-3000L) to respect the identity and personality of our wines.”
The nose immediately brought old-vine Rhône to mind; beautiful raspberry and kirsch scents along with generous spices: white and black pepper and sea salt. The palate continued what the nose started: big spice, more pepper and light garrique, sweet berry and plummy fruits with massive, appropriate tannins. We found many layers to this wine, as the mid-palate brought our more cherry liqueur, boeuf bouillon, reduction of raspberry and pomegranate. We were thinking (and salivating about) tri-tip or lamb with this one though the wine clearly stands out on its own-- a definite “wow” wine.
WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The 2009 Pielago is a cuvee of 100% Garnacha aged 14 months in 500 and 1500-liter French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up an enthralling nose of cassis, Asian spices, incense, lavender, black raspberry, and black cherry. Velvety on the palate with exceptional volume and precision balance, this succulent, full-flavored effort can be approached now but will drink well for a decade."

of Jerez and is widely regarded as one of the best in the area. Valdespino is also one of the few wineries that ferments the fino in the same barrels where it will start to age under flor. This bottling comes from several different butts that range from 8-1/2 to 10-1/2 years old, which is quite advanced for a fino. It was also bottled with almost no filtering, so the wine has more color and intensity than a typical fino. Great acidity frames distinct nuttiness, toasted almonds, olives and an incredibly long finish. Limited production of 4,000 bottles.
