their ancient farmhouse. Iñaki and his wife have worked the vineyard organically since the beginning and obtained organic certification in 2007. They’re the only certified organic producer in the Denominacion de Origen of Getariako Txakolina. Their wine Bengoetxe (pronounced: Ben-goy-cha) is grown in clay soils, and the grapes are 95% Hondarribi Zuri and 5% Gros Manseng. All fermentation and aging is in small stainless steel tanks with about a year on the lees to develop complexity and texture. Alcohol is 11.5%. Their total production is 20,000-23,000 bottles per year. The result is a wine with freshness and good acidity, together with a developed bees waxy complexity. This particular Tackle is less fizzy than the others because the CO2 occurs naturally. The result is a richer body with more mouth feel while keeping it's deep, vibrant minerality.

raspberry and dusty, loamy, earthy scents intermixed with notions of spring flowers and blackberries. There is not any oak evident in this dense effort. The wines of the small Priorat zone near Barcelona seemed to get endless press 5-10 years ago and with good reason—the vineyards were almost all rocky, steep, dangerously low-yielding, and fantastically good for quality. Now the spotlight seems to be moving to the adjacent Montsant zone which offers the same mix of old-vine Grenache and Carignan, the same slate soils, and much of the depth of Priorat—but at prices 50%-75% less than Priorat. Famed Spanish importer and vineyard hound, Jorge Ordoñez, has made a splash in the Montsant region with his newest project, Zerran. Another unbelievable value from Spain...

boasts a deep ruby color as well as loads of strawberry and black cherry fruit, hints of lavender and crushed rocks, sweet tannin, and a broad, savory mouthfeel. It, too, should be consumed over the next 3-4 years.

This has long been a popular source for value-priced wines. Founded in 1958 in the appellation of Campo de Borja, Borsao owns a whopping 3,706 acres of vineyards planted at elevations of 1,300 to 2,300 feet above sea level. The soils are primarily limestone-based and the area is highly reputed for old vine Grenache, but there is also Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah planted as well as a few white varietals. Bodegas Borsao’s flagship offering is Tres Picos. Made from 100% Grenache from yields of less than two tons of fruit per acre, these chalky vineyards are planted at a 2,000 foot plus altitude on the hillsides of the Moncayo Mountains. The harvest is all done by hand, and the wine is aged in a combination of stainless steel and French oak for ten months prior to bottling. If you have not yet discovered the great values of Bodegas Borsao, it’s about time you do."

less than one ton of fruit per acre. Fermented in stainless steel tanks and then transferred to new to 3-year-old French oak casks for 21 months, this outstanding red is the poor man's Priorat. Mineral notes of wet slate and gun flint are intermixed with blackcurrant, black cherry and cassis fruit in this dense, full-bodied, pure, lavishly rich, intense Spanish red. It is hard to believe what one can get at this price point if the importer and wine producer are committed to high quality."

Jorge Ordonez, the mastermind behind many of the world’s finest Spanish wines, purchased these vineyards in 2005. The property consists of old vines planted on rugged hillsides up to 3000 feet (the highest growing region for Garnacha grapes in Spain). The climate during the growing season is arid and blistering hot with cooling nights as a relief. The winter is very cold and never seems to end. Can grapes actually survive these conditions? Yes, but it’s probably not the best place for a vacation home! Those twisting and gnarly ancient head-pruned vines produce miniscule yields and incredible fruit concentration!

In the holy pantheon of Spanish red wines, the big, full-bodied wines of Priorat can contend only with Rioja and Ribera del Duero for excellence and prestige. A historical appellation dating back to the 12th Century, Priorat, or “priory,” takes its name from the Carthusian Monastery of Scala Dei founded in 1194 to commemorate the spot where, legend has it, a shepherd had a beatific vision of angels ascending a stairway to heaven. Buil & Gine, a family domaine founded in 1996, has quickly risen to preeminence in the appellation, and is widely considered one of the best young producers in Priorat.
