for at least 15 months. It has a generous nose of red cherries, over-ripe oranges and Indian ink that is attractive, if not overly complex. The palate is rounded and slightly leathery on the entry. the better Cavas, such as this gem from Bohigas, offer more finesse and dollar value than do their California counterparts. Fermí Bohigas is a sprawling (750-acre) family-owned wine estate located in central Catalonia about 45 miles west of Barcelona in the Anoia River Valley. The Bohigas family and their ancestors have been growing grapes and making wines at this location consecutively since 1290. The valley is particularly suitable for the production of Cava wines of great quality because the vines have naturally low yields and the grapes are high in acidity. This Cava Reserva is a classic blend of the indigenous Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada grapes. Though the family’s cellars date back to 1542, the winemaking equipment and practices here are strictly up to date. After a cold, temperature-controlled primary fermentation, the second (bottle) fermentation takes place in the estate’s cool, underground cave for two years before disgorgement. After the cork is popped, a bright sea air character marks this bubbly’s nose; notions of fresh pears, green apples and almond paste quickly follow. Tiny, persistent bubbles balance its creamy texture and provide an accent to the yellow plum, raspberry and chalk flavors. If you are looking for a sleek, sophisticated “house bubbly”... look no further.

French oak for ten months. It then spends a year in bottle prior to being released. A sleeper of the vintage, it reveals a deep ruby/purple color along with aromas of blackberries, black cherries, licorice and lavender. Full-bodied, rich, nicely textured and impressively pure, it can be enjoyed over the next 3-4 years."

INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLARS 90 POINTS - "Bright purple. Powerful aromas of blueberry, blackberry and peppery spices. Displays vibrant flavors of smoky dark berries, white pepper and candied flowers, with a hint of candied rose in the background. Rich but graceful blend with a smoky, floral finish."

We’ve always enjoyed the wines of Bodegas Borsao, and they are undeniably great wine for the money across the board. Last year in one of our features we repeated a quote from Robert Parker where he was so excited about the quality of the Borsao line-up that he dropped an F-Bomb on Twitter, almost: “-buy Bodegas Borsao 2010s and 2011s-all from Campo de Borja-all under $10, which is F*@$%^@ unreal for such quality-red, white, and rose.” In fairness, Parker was Tweeting about the entry level wines from Borsao, not the higher tier. All the same, as we tasted this new “Berola,” we almost immediately thought about that long-ago Tweet, “DANG! That 2010 Borsao really is “F*@$%^@ unreal.” With Cabernet and Syrah in the blend, plus the additional 2 years of aging for “Beroloa,” Borsao is aiming for something higher and more age worthy. Imagine a Reserva Rioja as compared with an entry-level Tinto—there is more toastiness in the “Berola,” but also more ginger and spice, more orange-pekoe tea, and subtle hints of dried flowers. It’s quite a wine for $12.95!

boasts a deep ruby color as well as loads of strawberry and black cherry fruit, hints of lavender and crushed rocks, sweet tannin, and a broad, savory mouthfeel. It, too, should be consumed over the next 3-4 years.

This has long been a popular source for value-priced wines. Founded in 1958 in the appellation of Campo de Borja, Borsao owns a whopping 3,706 acres of vineyards planted at elevations of 1,300 to 2,300 feet above sea level. The soils are primarily limestone-based and the area is highly reputed for old vine Grenache, but there is also Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah planted as well as a few white varietals. Bodegas Borsao’s flagship offering is Tres Picos. Made from 100% Grenache from yields of less than two tons of fruit per acre, these chalky vineyards are planted at a 2,000 foot plus altitude on the hillsides of the Moncayo Mountains. The harvest is all done by hand, and the wine is aged in a combination of stainless steel and French oak for ten months prior to bottling. If you have not yet discovered the great values of Bodegas Borsao, it’s about time you do."

In the holy pantheon of Spanish red wines, the big, full-bodied wines of Priorat can contend only with Rioja and Ribera del Duero for excellence and prestige. A historical appellation dating back to the 12th Century, Priorat, or “priory,” takes its name from the Carthusian Monastery of Scala Dei founded in 1194 to commemorate the spot where, legend has it, a shepherd had a beatific vision of angels ascending a stairway to heaven. Buil & Gine, a family domaine founded in 1996, has quickly risen to preeminence in the appellation, and is widely considered one of the best young producers in Priorat.
