an extreme climate change between day and night helping to produce wines with an excellent color, structure, acidity and suitable for aging in barrels. And this wine certainly shows its roots-- while definitely in the affordable category of wine in general, this one drinks way above its price point and reflects well the pedigree of its terroir. The nose is sweet, loaded with dark plum jam, wood spice, black cherry, pepper and a touch of salt lick/coarse sea salt. The palate is replete with rich fruit, cherries and plums, while minerality balances with earth, spice and appropriate acidity to lead into a moderately long, tasty finish. This is solid wine and a good red for warmer weather.

water source): clean, refreshing, lovely. The palate starts off rich and oily with just a touch of sweetness that ismoderated by cleansing acidity. Beautiful spring fruits abound: sweet quince, citrus notes (almost like lemon icing) and plenty of orchard fruits enmesh on the palate with a touch of earthiness and lemon grass on the finish. The final note, however, brings the palate back to the fresh stream water running over granite.

This wine was another highlight at a recent staff "value" tasting, as it really stood out against many of the other wines. And why not! The nose starts with bright, forward fruit, almost in a Cru Beaujolais way, with notes of kirsch and mixed berries enwrapped with a mineral component, sea air and a touch of salted meat; the kind of nose that evokes a Pavlovian response. The palate keeps the fruit lively and uplifted with ripe cherry and mixed red berries riding a layer of balanced tannins toward a lengthy, lush finish.

The ‘09 is 100% Tempranillo and ready for summer grillin’! One of the things we love about Tempranillo is its versatility-- from soft and delicate to boisterous and big, and all points in between, Tempranillo can fill just about any role you throw at it. For this one, we’re thinking summer barbecues with lots of friends and family around. The nose is salivatingly good (Pavlovian, to say the least); the salty, earthy smell of Jamón Ibérico leads, while a smattering of fresh berries (elderberries, blueberries, raspberries) follows closely behind, bolstered by deft streaks of autumn spices, nutmeg, pepper and a hint of mint. The palate starts with sweet fruit while ample tannins immediately make their presence felt. A mélange of flavors lovingly assaults the palate: sassafras, sassafras tea, earthy spice, salted plum, cherry, licorice, smoke. And, like a good chorale of trained voices, each seems to know how to blend with each; the flavors and scents merge harmoniously to make a beautiful, easy-to-drink, balanced wine.

and longevity. It should see its 30th birthday in fine form. I also was able to taste the 2010 Finca Dofi and 2010 L’Ermita at this early stage. Palacios seems very pleased by his material and I see no reason to doubt him.
Alvaro Palacios established his namesake winery in 1989. The flagship L’Ermita made its debut in 1993. Finca Dofi and L’Ermita vineyards are farmed biodynamically. All of the wines are bottled without filtration. In 2008 Palacios was the last grower in Priorat to harvest, waiting out rains that diluted other growers’ fruit. It appears that 2009 was a slightly more successful vintage for Alvaro Palacios (and most Priorat producers) than was 2008. All of the 2009s were tasted from barrel samples at the Bodega in January 2011.

This Calatayud D.O. offers one of the most unique areasin Spain for old vine Garnacha and is set to follow Priorat as a cutting edge region for Garnacha bases wines and world class winemaking. After individual varietal fermentation, the blended wine spends 5 months in French and American barrels. When the wine is poured, you are struck by the deep purple color and crimson rim. The nose provides aromas of raspberry and cherrypunctuated by herbs and vanilla. This is a full-bodied wine with plenty of ripe fruit, fine velvety tannins and crisp acidity.Papa Luna takes its name from Pedro Martinaz de Luna, born near the Calatayud vineyards, who served as the last Pope to reign in Avignon during the dual Papacy of the 15th. century.
