classic Bordeaux grape varieties. Winemaker Albie Koch applies a meticulous approach to winemaking, for example, using gravity instead of pumps in the winery. Judging by their website, the inspiration is Bordeaux, though stylistically these wines are New World to their core. These are big, powerful, quite alcoholic wines that are more reminiscent of some cult Napa Valley wines and they would certainly appeal to those who appreciate that style.

The Elgin Valley which has long been regarded as the apple and pear center of South Africa, now has some of the country's most highly regarded winemakers establishing vineyards in the area, testament to its obvious winemaking potential.
They focus on viticulture principles in order to reflect their commitment to winemaking as an expression of terroir. Technological surveys ensured that the correct grape variety, clone and rootstock combination was planted in the diverse ancient soil types. The vineyards benefit from the high altitude cool temperatures, as well as an abundant rainfall throughout the year and the prevailing cold summer wind, known as the "Black South-Easter" blowing in from the ocean 12 kilometers away. Viticulture practices and canopy management, which enhance longer ripening periods, capture in the wines the broad spectrum of flavors created in the cool climate of this unique terroir!
The focus of this wine is based on a vineyard component arising from low yielding Table Mountain Sandstone soils. Using neutral yeasts, Shannon Sauvignon Blanc expresses very distinctive and concentrated primary fruit aromas of asparagus, citrus, and some capsicum in a minerally and flinty style. The clay/shale soils however, provide the Sauvignon with flavors on the riper side of the fruit spectrum and with more structure for a broader palate. The blending in of naturally fermented Semillon, matured on the lees, provides a fuller mouth feel and adds to the complexity of the wine. This wine was vinified in a style that enhances the aging potential of Sauvignon Blanc.

months in French oak, the 2006 Ernie Els Signature almost scores a hole in one. It has a very sensual, harmonious bouquet with dark red fruits, mocha, cedar and a touch of tobacco, whilst the palate is beautifully balanced with silky smooth tannins. The 14.7% alcohol is barely noticeable on the finish with touches of orange rind enlivening the long finish. Allow this at least a couple of hours decanting to show its true potential. Superb". capturing lush vectors of ripe plum, black cherry, boysenberry and black currant fruit deftly accented with sundry hints of spice, carob and espresso.Technically a blend of Cabernet (90%), Syrah (8%) and Petit Verdot (2%), we could ramble on about South Africa, the De Wet family who own the estate and their commitment to produce world class wine as well as the high quality of the 2008 vintage in South Africa, but why? This is perhaps the most “un-South African” wine we’ve ever tasted from South Africa! The wine’s bright fruit is clearly the star of the show. And while Excelsior’s finish showcases just a bit of this wine nation’s unique volcanic soil, we think you’ll agree that Excelsior could easily have emanated from such familiar locales as Napa or Bordeaux. The beauty of the bottle is the price as we don’t often see wines of this quality from either of these renowned regions coming in at the sub-$10 niveau. All in all, this is a tremendous wine bargain that deserves both a test drive and a place at your table. It’s perfectly suited to all of the season’s activities be they at the beach, on board, on the patio or at the pool. Your summer house red has arrived!

the flagship 2009 The FMC has a beautifully defined, intoxicating bouquet with lemon curd, frangipane, almond and just a touch of nutmeg. WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS - " Ripe and lush, with delicious creamed pear, ginger, heather and fig kept honest by fresh acidity that's well-embedded on the toasty finish. This really stretches out in the glass too, with pear eau-de-vie and hazelnut oil notes lingering on the finish. Gorgeous. Drink now through 2014. 200 cases imported."
This iconic Chenin is a benchmark South African bottling, and what Ken Forrester considers to be the ultimate expression of the Chenin Blanc grape. The grapes are grown in Ken Forrester’s estate vineyards at the foot of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch.
The vineyards are farmed organically, and everything is done by hand. Grapes for the FMC are hand selected from a single block of low yielding Chenin bush vines planted in 1974. Each vine is pruned to 5 or 6 shoots, with 1 bunch per shoot. They are planted in Clovelly — a deep yellow sandy soil — on south-southwest-facing slopes.
