styled sweet Rieslings. He has been on target with these wines since he first began making them at Chateau St. Jean 30 years ago. The auslese-styled 2007 Special Select Late Harvest Riesling Saralee’s Vineyard contains 21.7 grams of residual sugar as well as terrific acidity, and gorgeous aromas of lychee nuts, apricots, peaches, and apple butter. This sweet white should drink easily for another 5-6 years."

ended up achieving both! While Richard Arrowood has since sold the winery, it is good to see that the new owners are carrying on his same attention to detail that Richard had, and the winemaking staff work hard to keep Arrowood Winery at the top of its game! The grapes come from primarily organic or sustainably-farmed vineyards along the benches, hillsides and mountains of Sonoma County (Monte Rosso is one of those vineyards). Fruit forward, bright aromas of raspberries and cherries are intermixed with cola and subtle oak. On the palate, the tannins are full yet velvety, and the wine shows flavors of cocoa, raspberries, black currants, anise and a hint of minerals. This wine shows a remarkable balance for the pricepoint!

The cool 2010 vintage has led to the most aromatically enticing and delicate Sonoma Coast Syrah to date for winemaker and owner Morgan Twain-Peterson. The wine’s backbone is Read More...
from Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, which came into the winery late in October at 23.4 brix. The remainder of the wine is composed of Griffin’s Lair Syrah, a trace of Old Lakeville, and a smidge of Hudson for depth. All of the lots saw some percentage of whole-cluster, and I would merit a guess that the wine is roughly 33% whole-cluster with 20% new oak. Aromatically effusive, the wine smells of violets and cracked pepper. Currently, the wine is still tight and demands a good decanting prior to consumption.

It’s easy to say that Morgan Twain-Peterson was born into the wine industry… so let’s start there. Morgan is the son of legendary Ravenswood winemaker and Zinfandel legend Joel Peterson. Read More...
At the age of 5, Morgan was able to distinguish Merlot from Zinfandel, and being the son of Joel, that made for some early learning of winemaking basics and eventually the essential techniques for fine winemaking. But Joel didn’t stop there. He went onto other wineries and regions to learn other methods, like working in the McLaren Vale region of Australia, and even working as a visiting winemaker at Château Lynch Bages in Bordeaux. Oh yeah…and he passed the Master of Wine exam!

Morgan only works with high quality fruit from high quality sites and ferments them in open top redwood and stainless steel fermenters then ages them in the sexiest French barrels from the coldest forests. The results are tremendous wines that range in style from opulent to elegant, yet taste exceptionally balanced!

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "Young and still a tad angular, showing an underlying sense of elegance and focus, with plenty of black cherry, toasted cinnamon and spice aromas and flavors. Best from 2014 through 2019. 750 cases made."

for three decades, and they have become masters of Cabernet in this small winegrowing region just to the north of Napa Valley.

Now, Beringer has made a big splash with their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from Knights Valley! Last year's rendition received 94 from Wine Spectator, and was featured prominently on their "Top Wine" list. The new release has landed, and it has received the same 94 point score! The fermentation was long and slow to enhance the lush mouthfeel of the blend and extract the maximum amount of color, aromas, and flavors. It looks like this technique has worked, because again, they have received the lofty scores that so many others an only dream about!

WINE SPECTATOR 94 POINTS - "Strikingly rich and layered, this red is beautifully balanced, elegant and graceful, with a tremendous mix of blackberry, mocha, melted black licorice and currant flavors, ending with firm, grainy tannins. The push of ripe fruit is long and persistent. Drink now through 2022. 5,000 cases made."

of early ripening fruit. This allows enough time for the Syrah’s astringency to soften on the vine without compromising the aroma or flavor that can become diluted with over-ripening. Syrah is an intensely black grape, best known as an inky red wine. When whole cluster pressed, like a white wine, Syrah blushes to a gorgeous crimson tint. Early bottling preserves the fresh fruitiness of this festive wine.

Rosés are commonly associated with other sweet varietals, but this particular Rosé is crisp with watermelon, grapefruit, and strawberry flavors balanced with sprightly acidity.

As the name would imply, this wine is in honor of The Count of Buena Vista, a tireless and passionate devotee of Californian wines. From prestigious vineyards across Sonoma, The Count's intriguing varietals intermingle seamlessly to produce an elegant and complex wine. Individual lots of Zinfandel, Syrah, and Merlot were fermented separately and aged for 16 months in American, Hungarian, and French oak barrels before final assemblage. The wine's bouquet opens beautifully with rich aromas of black currant, cherries, grilled meat, pepper, and just a hint of espresso. Smooth on the palate, the wine offers flavors of red fruit compote, plum, raspberries, and blackberry that give way to cardamom on the long, silky finish.

What we like about this wine is that it reminds us of something from Burgundy, like a Macon, yet still shows its Sonoma roots. The wine has a clean nose of crème freche, apple, minerals and a slight toasted almond note. These carry through to the palate joining round peach, smoke, spice, and honeycomb. It strikes the perfect balance of acidity and structure.

Most Sauvignon Blancs at this price are crisp yet simple, but Buena Vista brings us a medium-bodied Sauvignon Blanc showcasing aromas of sea salt, smoke, and citrus peel, such as lemon and lime. It also shows some warm spiciness, green cardamom, anise, sweet hay and honeydew. The lime peel and honeydew carry over on the palate, leading to a clean and fresh, lingering finish.
