This white is composed of 100% Carricante, a white variety native to Sicily. The grapes were gently pressed then fermented in cold stainless steel tanks. This white displays apple and pear aromas and flavors with hints of hazelnuts and honey balanced by lemony acidity. Stony minerality leads to a long finish.

of lava rocks and good drainage. The 2001 has wonderful old-world Nebbiolo-like charm with aromas of dried blackberries and wild berries mixed with smoke, scorched earth, crushed stones and hints of basil. This demonstrates remarkable balance and focus with a tightly wound core and long chewy finish. A sensational bottle-aged wine and a serious value.

terrain housing Mt. Etna, the still quite active volcano. The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, all of the major wine publications (and the minor ones, too) have waxed poetic on the wild, raw beauty of this sunny island and their wines, with an emphasis lately on the indigenous grapes of Sicily: Nerello Mascalese - a sleek, graceful red (a grape reminiscent of Nebbiolo) and its huskier sibling Nerello Cappuccio.

The newly found fame of this viticultural area has given way for all the major players in the winebiz to settle here. While quietly, in the background is Calabretta, a winery founded in 1900, who keep on making wine just as they have done for generations. The winery is run by Massimo Calabretta and his son Massimiliano, farming approximately seven hectares of 70-80-year-old vines, many ungrafted planted on steep terraces. The Calabrettas are traditional producers, crafting their wines in a similar manner to Barolo, by long aging in massive neutral barrels (known as botti), and releasing them after extended ageing in the cellar. This is a costly service to the winemaker, a practice that is rarely done these days. The result is beautiful, and we are thankful for their effort.

In the glass, the wine is clear, medium garnet with a pinkish rim. The nose is intensely fruited and herbal with strong notes of cherries, orange peel, lavender, leather, rose petals, clove, and white truffle. The palate is equally swoon-worthy, with a Pinot Noir-like body and good acidity, sporting flavors of cherries, blackberries, cranberry, rhubarb, sage, walnut, tomato leaf and a hint of English Breakfast Tea on its fine tannins. This is a wine of tremendous character, something you could linger on and enjoy by just sniffing to uncover its many facets. We can't wait to try this wine with dishes such as osso bucco, duck, rabbit or veal.

What is the vintage of this wine? "Cala Cala" means "table wine" in Italian; and Calabretta's is a blend of four different wines of Etna Rosso. 2009 (2 different wines), 2005 and 2008... so 4 wines together! This is an exceptional buy, and something every lover of traditionally styled wines must try.

Colosi is a great source for value-priced whites and reds that are sure to find a place as house wines or by the glass offerings. This year the wines are a little less exciting than they have been in the past, but it is hard to argue with the quality Colosi puts into the bottle at these prices."

big wines easily, but all too often there is an element of pruniness or cooked fruit. Not here. Alessandro Cellai’s skill shows through in the freshness and brightness of the fruit that is surprising and truly rare in a wine this big. There are multiple “Tre Bicchieri” wines already in the Pisciotto lineup, but this Merlot was our favorite and took us by surprise. Be bold. Try this Merlot.

fruit and earthy morel combine with a sweetness and native aroma of terrior and fresh purple fruit. A wine of this magnitude can only be crafted from great wisdom and clarity of viticulture and enology. Incredible concentration, smooth tannin, and soft acidity combine with black cherry and blackberry fruit to create an incredible, harmonius palate with magnificent balance, complexity, and purity."

In the early 1980`s Salvatore Di Gaetano`s passion for wine drew him to a unique place: Contrada Firriato in the extraordinary countryside outside the city of Trapani. It is a land, which bears the deep and indelible signs of wine-growing and the culture of wine, nestled between Trapani`s marvelous sea and coastline and the majestic rock on which the town of Erice stands. At Firriato, respect for the naturalness of grapes, exalting their wine-making potential and enhancing the unique features of each grape variety are the rules that Salvatore Di Gaetano has strictly followed right from the beginning, harvest after harvest. These rules have allowed for the creation of a new model of winery rooted in the local territory and focused on more demanding and educated markets.

Named for the road going past the winery, SP68 is a blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato made from young vines and new plantings. Many think of Sicily as a source of bulk wine, but Arianna’s are soulful and balanced, fresh and lively. The Nero imparts rich dark red fruits and the Frappato gives a high-toned raspberry note, a perfect balance of power and finesse. The wine is energetic and electric, bursting with flavors of tart cherry, raspberry and herbs and soft tannins, making this one of the best values in her lineup. This is a wine we would heartily recommend to be served slightly chilled with food.

Marco Di Grazia who makes the wines of Sicily’s Tenuta Delle Terre Nere. Marco farms the land of these terraced hills of lava rock to produce some of the most elegant, soulful wines we have tasted. The 2012 Etna Rosso is the estate’s entry level wine made of 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio. One cannot stop thinking of the black lava rock as you taste this wine. There is, of course, a fine core of dark raspberry fruit, but it is outlined by pristine black earth. The wine soars with red fruits and bright acids, and then goes to a deeper level with that dark finish. Customers who have purchased this wine in the past have become immediate fans of this Sicilian wine, and the 2012 vintage is definitely worth seeking out. On the island of Sicily stands Mount Etna, one of the world’s most unique locations for growing grapes. At nearly 11,000 feet, this is home to one of the most active volcanoes in Europe, known throughout history. It is believed that the ancient Greeks thought this locale to be the home of Vulcan, god of fire… and with every eruption he forged weapons for Mars, god of war.

with roughly 65%. All from old vines 25-60 years old. And, somehow, it works. A perfectly lovely wine. And the loveliness turns thoughtful and deepens, still graceful, never redundant.
