big wines easily, but all too often there is an element of pruniness or cooked fruit. Not here. Alessandro Cellai’s skill shows through in the freshness and brightness of the fruit that is surprising and truly rare in a wine this big. There are multiple “Tre Bicchieri” wines already in the Pisciotto lineup, but this Merlot was our favorite and took us by surprise. Be bold. Try this Merlot.

better wine, there is just more of everything in the glass. Black cherries, licorice, mint and tobacco wrap around a big, voluptuous finish. Silky and polished throughout, the 2009 Saia is another fabulous wine from Feudo Maccari. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019"

Balanced and delicious. Tannins are very velvety. Excellent. Drink or hold."

On the island of Sicily stands Mount Etna, one of the world's most unique locations for growing grapes. At nearly 11,000 feet, this is home to one of the most active volcanoes in Europe, known throughout history. It is believed that the ancient Greeks thought this locale to be the home of Vulcan, god of fire… and with every eruption he forged weapons for Mars, god of war. The last notable eruption was April 2012!

Mount Etna’s terrain is rugged, stunning, and one of the highest vineyards in Italy. The landscape features black soil juxtaposed with twisting vines and forests. Here, the vineyards of Tenuta Della Terre Nere are located at extremely high altitudes, ranging from 2100-2900 feet above sea level. The altitude makes for warm days and cold nights, making the wines incredibly fine and elegant.

The primary grape grown here is Nerello Mascalese, a grape indigenous to Sicily, creating wines that could be described as somewhere between the Nebbiolo grape of Barolo and the Pinot Noir grape of Burgundy, yet more approachable. The average age of the vines is 70-years-old.

The 2011 Tenuta Della Terre Etna Rosso is a blend of 98% Nerello Mascalese, and 2% Nerello Cappuccio. In the glass, the wine is a vibrant ruby red. The nose is sheer delight and soars with aromas of sweet tea and raspberry, followed by undercurrents of cranberry, lavender, and a hint of spice. This light-bodied wine (with 13.5% alcohol) tastes of raspberry tea, blackberries, a hint of orange peel, and finishes with soft tannins and pomegranate. This is a wine you will want at the ready, to enjoy by itself, or to have with white or red meat dishes. It is undeniably delicious and memorable.
