Bibi Graetz, a respected artist born of Italian and Norwegian parents, started Testmatta (meaning “hot head” in Italian) in the late 90’s just outside of Florence in the renaissance town of Fiesole. At the time his family was faced with losing the lease contracts on some untended old Sangiovese vines that surround his home at the Castello de Vincigliata, or to take the time to recover the vineyard and produce wines. Naturally Bibi saw an artistic opportunity, and chose to begin production with his first vintage in 2000.

Bibi is known for his artwork throughout Europe, and each label is adorned with his personal work.

Testamatta Toscana is his Super Tuscan offering, though breaking a bit with new tradition for Super Tuscans, this wine is 100% Sangiovese. Bibi wanted to see what could be done with Sangiovese with judicious use of new French oak, and the result is the creation of a cult classic. Bibi’s Testamatta Toscana IGT will lay down for quite some time.

gives this red appeal. The structure is well-integrated, and the wine shows elegance and finesse overall. Best from 2017 through 2024."

Medium ruby in color. On the nose, aromas of dusty rose, leather and truffle frame the red fruit flavors including lovely cherries. On the palate, the wine’s structure puts it in the medium plus to full-bodied realm. Nice acidity provides lift to the cherry and strawberry flavors while non fruit flavors such as leather, tobacco and white pepper add complexity and interest. Enjoyed with rich dishes such as grilled, roasted or braised red meat, game dishes, and seasoned cheeses.

As featured on the cover of Wine Spectator under the heading "Tuscan Treasures," comes this terrific Sangiovese-based wine from Boscarelli. Spectator designated this Vino Nobile de Montelpuciano as Highly Recommended and awarded it 93 Points, describing it as having "brilliant balance, finesse and elegance."

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of three great Sangiovese production zones in Tuscany along with Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano appellation is a fraction of the size of either which probably accounts for it being lesser known than the other two. The well-regarded Sangiovese clone, Prugnolo Gentile is used to craft this wine. The hilltop town of Montepulciano produces a wine, which combines the richness of Brunello di Montalcino with the perfume of Chianti Classico.

The very "noble" estate of Paola De Ferrari Corradi was founded in 1962 by her father. Paola’s elder sons Luca and Nicolò are now managing the vineyard. Together they make a fantastic wine, which should not be overlooked. This is a terrific example of what one can expect from this region of "noble vines." Salute!

boasts stunning depth, power and richness. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2006 is also likely to require a considerable amount of time to come around. All the elements are in the right place for the 2006 Riserva to develop into a splendid wine. The mid-weight, firm style is classic Castell'in Villa."

Castell’in Villa became one of the first producers in Chianti to remove Canaiolo and bottle 100% Sangiovese. Today, under the continuous care of Princess Coralia, all of the wines are produced from estate grown fruit. Coralia is dedicated to producing traditionally styled, high quality wines, from low yielding vineyards, and releases older vintages only when they are showing their best. Wines are released only when they are ready, which typically ends up being two vintages later than most producers in Chianti.

Rose petal, mint, sage, rosemary, leather and smoke hit the palate in a voluptuous, racy Rancia. The 2011 should drink well earlier than many other recent vintages, but it should also age nicely. WINE MAKER NOTES: "The color is bright ruby, the nose unveils layers of iris, violet, tobacco, black pepper and marasca cherry. The taste is well balanced, tightly knit with supple tannins, mineral notes, a mouth cleansing fresh acidity. Warm and persistent. Pair with first courses such as pasta, meat dishes and moderately aged cheeses."

Badia a Coltibuono is about one thousand years old but its prehistory takes us back to Estrucan times and beyond. As we know it today, Badia a Coltibuono (which means Abbey of the Good Harvest), dates from the middle of the eleventh century. Forest berries, spices, leather, moist earth and dried plum, layered in the aroma. Soft, round taste, well-balanced acidity and clean and persistent aftertaste. Very pleasing, and ready to drink. Coltibuono remains one of the most beloved estates in the Chianti zone. Over the past few years their wines have gained a high level of finesse and quality.
