whatever the task at hand is. So being the hardcore surfer that he is, you can imagine how dedicated to winemaking Aaron must be when he has to leave those firing Central Coast point breaks to head for the vineyards! His wines have been staples at our store for years, and it's amazing how he can make Petite Sirah taste so good, keep it complex yet easy to drink, and sell such a tasty wine for so little money! Blended with just a splash of both Zinfandel and Syrah, it is still a massive wine, yet a touch more supple and approachable than others, with its big nose of chocolate covered cherries, plums, licorice, and similar flavors intermixed with blueberries, vanilla bean, grilled meat and spice. This wine is dense, rich, flavorful, fruit-forward, and has a long finish balanced with velvety tannins. Feel free to pick one up for your filet, or for that pizza after your next sunset session!

Aaron's Vintage and Tasting Notes: "2010 was the coolest year I have ever experienced (until 2011 came along), with such a cool, slow ripening period in summer and fall that I wondered if the vines would even make it to the finish line. In the end all of my vineyards were picked in October, almost a month later than usual, but the extremely long hangtime allowed for super-slow flavor development and incredible acid levels.

"The resulting 2010 Petite is a wine that truly reflects the vintage, with awesome aromatics and a nice dose of savory, cool vintage characters. Black pepper, smoked herbs, and game frame up boysenberry, black plum, and blackerry. Wonderful acidity highlights the black fruit and spice elements, followed by moderate, grippy tannins. All the elements hint at longer-term aging, whereby I believe the wine will truly blossom. Only the very best 12 barrels made it into this years blend, making production a mere 297 cases. The blend is a makeup of 4 vineyards all grown on calcareous soils, 40% in Westside Paso, and 60% from the Eastern portions of Templeton."

of 100% free run juice...NO PRESSED JUICE! Very few producers employ this practice as it increases overall costs dramatically. But Paul feels that this gets him the best possible wine he can put in the bottle, and considering the price, it kind of makes you wonder why others charge more, yet their quality isn't as high???

This is 95% Grenache from the Uriel J. Nielson Vineyard, and 5% Syrah from the Minetti Vineyard. Paul utilized whole cluster fermentation on 25% of the grapes, and aged the wine for 32 months in 100% new French oak barrels. The Law of Return bears the hallmarks of Paul's obsessive attention to detail and fruit potential. Pouring a dark royal purple, the wine reveals unreal density without sacrificing vibrancy and nuance. Oh, by the way...only 83 bottles were produced!

The Barrel 27 guys have long searched for that perfect vineyard for the Rhône Valley’s bedrock grape... Grenache. That search has ended and the result is the most seductive Rock and a Hard Place to date! The wine exhibits a dark ruby-black color with a compelling nose of pureed raspberry, black berry jam, crushed mint leaf, sweet Tellicherry black pepper and cocoa, followed by hints of Chinese 5 Spices, cranberry, prosciutto, warm tar, lychee and rhubarb pie. In the mouth, the wine's purity shines out with flavors of dried raspberry and cranberry, mint, sage, cured meat and fresh herbs, with elements of wood smoke, nori, citrus and smoky paprika. Superb acidity balances the excellent tannin structure and the wine's generous body, yielding a long, pure finish of fruit and spice.

The wine possesses a deep black garnet color and a powerhouse nose of black plum, blackberry and black cherry fruits, with floral elements of lavender, candy mint and violets, followed up by notes of black pepper, tarry creosote, cola berry, blood orange and dried cranberry. The dense, rich mouth is dominated by dark plum and blackberry fruit with flavors of Chinese Black tea, anise/black licorice, rose water, red grapefruit and warm crème brulee. The wine's long finish is dominated by fruit, spice and a long graphite and soil note. Great acidity and excellent tannin provide the perfect structure for the biggest Right Hand Man to date!

The cool 2010 vintage has led to the most aromatically enticing and delicate Sonoma Coast Syrah to date for winemaker and owner Morgan Twain-Peterson. The wine’s backbone is Read More...
from Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, which came into the winery late in October at 23.4 brix. The remainder of the wine is composed of Griffin’s Lair Syrah, a trace of Old Lakeville, and a smidge of Hudson for depth. All of the lots saw some percentage of whole-cluster, and I would merit a guess that the wine is roughly 33% whole-cluster with 20% new oak. Aromatically effusive, the wine smells of violets and cracked pepper. Currently, the wine is still tight and demands a good decanting prior to consumption.

Tempier and some additional conversations with the winemaker there I have revamped the way I make the rose a bit. In 2010 I picked the grapes at a super-low 20.9 brix, and instead of destemming the grapes prior to putting them in the press, I did the entire lot as whole-cluster. This meant less breaking down of the skins and less protracted skin-contact, thereby lowering both the color and tannin uptake. The wine was pressed to a stainless tank where it was fermented cold using indigenous yeasts to dryness and a low 12.8% alcohol (the label is wrong). Unlike previous years where full malolactic conversion was allowed to take place I only allowed limited MLF so as to preserve a bit more of the raciness imparted by the malic acid. This is the first year I am close to 100% pleased with the rose'-it is finally starting to resemble to the California-inflected graceful stuff I had envisioned.

Edgar’s Tempranillo comes from French Camp Vineyard on the hilly Southeast area of Paso Robles. While it is warm enough to fully ripen Tempranillo, this region of Paso is slightly more moderate than other parts. This means you get physiologically mature fruit that isn’t overripe. Aged for 18 months in a combination of new and used barrels, this wine has a crazy aroma of rhubarb pie, lingonberry, sweet applewood smoke, mint leaf, cinnamon, red licorice, camphor bark, coffee. The Tempranillo offers flavors of rich dried raspberry and cherry, baking chocolate, vanilla bean, and has fine and grippy tannins with a long, strong finish.

Last year, winemaker Edgar Torres brought us a couple wines that were simply amazing! This year is no different, other than the fact that he has a new wine that is really gets us excited! Read More...
His latest bottling is called "Toro de Paso", a blend of 37% Tempranillo, 26% Grenache, and 37% Merlot. The Tempranillo and Grenache are a couple of the primary grapes in many Spanish reds, and coming from this Central Coast region, calling this wine Toro de Paso just made sense. From the first pour, we were hooked, as this wine displays an intense garnet color with a purple hue, and aromas of violets, spice, dried cherries, strawberries, plums, and violets. Similar flavors follow suit, where they are joined by blueberries, blackberries, minerals, grilled meat, and just the right amount of tannin. Rich, juicy, forward, and still retaining good structure, this wine is tasty now, and should continue to drink well for another 5-7 years. Could this Spanish/Bordeaux blend be the next big style to come out of Paso Robles?...We think other wineries should take note!
