We finished the tasting with the Pilgrim Syrah, which incorporates a splash of Viognier and comes from the Bien Nacido and John Sebastiano vineyards. The 2011 Syrah Pilgrim is a beauty, especially in the vintage. It's even more impressive as the wine was just bottled two weeks prior to this tasting. Possessing fabulous complexity, with pretty white pepper, spiced meats, ground herbs and plenty of dark fruit, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, solid underlying structure and focused finish. The acidity is nicely integrated, there's solid mid-palate depth and the tannin, while noticeable, is polished and ripe, all suggesting this will evolve gracefully. Enjoy bottles over the coming 7-8 years."

"The Offering" is comprised of 48% Grenache, 29% Syrah, 21% Mouvedre and 2% Viognier, aged in new, once-used, and neutral French oak. The grapes came from several notable vineyards in Santa Barbara County, including Larner, Bien Nacido, Les Galets, and Alta Mesa. The 2011 Offering is a window into another world. Expansive on the palate, with precise, dark aromatics it is one of the most provocative wines from Sans Liege. Like watching a tribe adorn red warpaint in a primeval forest. Earthen scents of black soil, crushed oyster shell, Lapsang Souchong tea and birch beer fall away as your attention hones in on the ceremony. The fragrance of kirsch, quince paste, red delicious apple skin and rooibos tea emerge as the tribesmen paint their faces with the meat of dangerous red fruits. On a spit an animal is roasting, you can almost taste the sweet char, bay leaf, porcini mushroom, peppercorn and fresh herbs. An arrow flies. You take off, running forever into the darkening jungle.

The Cotes du Coast bottling is Curt's take on a white Rhone blend. Comprised of 54% Viognier, 19% Roussanne, 15% Grenache Blanc, and 12% Marsanne, the wine was fermented in both new and used French oak barrels.

Curt's Tasting Notes: "In the woodcuts of old books, you will find images of old liturgy. The people gathered in quiet comradery. Wafts of ancient spice, boughs of cloved oranges and dried thyme hanging neatly overhead. There are remnants of those days still with us, they land softly as moths on a lantern’s glass, subtly altering the color of cast light. These ghosts are around us, continually changing the form of the world from chaos and clamour to the friendly and familiar. They create in us the spice of home: frothed cream, cinnamon flan, orange marmalade, moss covered roofs and poached apples. When these shades arrive the world snaps into focus with the freshness of lime zest, grated fennel and pressed cilantro leaf."

The Alta Mesa block of the Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard is in many ways the heart of Sans Liege, it is far-off, unknown and alluring. Aged for 22 months in new, once-used, and neutral French oak barrels, this is a dark, penetrating and dancing wine, and is a testament to the deep power the vineyard holds. We find scents of violet, soft leather, raspberry coulis and fresh hewn redwood circle around a velveteen palate of dried cherry, Chambord, thyme and seared bread with brooding, black tannins. A wine to be had at the moment of insight into a lifelong riddle.

Loaded with kirsch, dried earth, ground herbs and spice, it's full-bodied, rich, chewy and decadent, with a heady finish. The majority of this Grenache came from vineyards in the an area the Paso Robles locals call the Templeton Gap. This area benefits from the warm summer days, and the cooling winds that scream over the Santa Lucia Mountains and fan over this particular area. This smells of preserved cherries, Sandalwood, Ceylon tea, rose petals, cinnamon, Peaberry coffee bean and cognac, while the flavors are of chocolate, nutmeg, caraway, plum and mint.

The Prophetess is a blend of some of Curt's most prized lots. To make this wine spectacular, Curt gives no preference to vintage. This is evident as the wine is a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Mourvedre, of which 70% comes from the 2012 vintage and 30% comes from the 2011 vintage. He is blending fruit from some of the best vineyards in California's Central Coast, including Bien Nacido, Les Galets, White Hawk, Alta Mesa, and Alta Colina! The wine was aged from 22-34 months in a combination of new and neutral barriques.

Tasting this wine is like busting open a pinata in your mouth, as the wine shows blackberry cola, preserved plums, candied bacon, black chocolates, and tiny bottles of anise liqueur. Robust yet definitely drinkable now, the wine finishes with fine-grained tannins and blueberry cobbler.

This is the "stepping stone" into the Sans Liege world of wines. The Transcendentalist is a multi-vintage blend from several distict vineyards in California's Central Coast, including Alta Mesa, Larner, Bien Nacido, White Hawk, Laetitia, Alta Colina, Watch Hill, Old Potrero, and Black Ridge. The wine is comprised of 46% Syrah, 41% Grenache, and 13% Mourvedre from the 2011, 2012, and 2013 vintages. The wine begins with aromas and flavors of chocolate covered cherries, elderflower liqueur, black licorice, soft maple candies, blood orange, Juniper berry, cinnamon bark, bergamot, nag champa and cherry hookah smoke. Stolpman is focused on bringing producers together to promote the area. To be sure, Ballard Canyon is a very distinctive region, especially for Syrah, so it will be interesting to see how things develop here in the coming years. As for his own wines, Stolpman's A-list team of winemaker Sashi Moorman and vineyard guru Ruben Solorzano keeps ratcheting up the quality level at the estate. In addition to these wines, I also tasted a few selections from the estate's library, including the 2004 Roussanne L'Avion, Syrah Estate and Syrah Angeli. Although those wines have aged pretty nicely, they also show just how far Stolpman has come in the last few years, especially with regards to cooperage. Simply put, these wines have never been better.

"Explosive and perfumed to the core, the 2012 Syrah Originals captivates all the sense with exuberant perfume and super-intense fruit, all with plenty of underlying structure. Cloves, lavender, mint and an array of spices inform the fragrant, highly expressive finish. The 60% whole clusters are impeccably balanced. This is a gorgeous showing from Stolpman."

It too is medium to full-bodied, rich and textured, with pretty violets, purple fruits, spring flowers and edgy minerality. Seeing 80% whole clusters and 18 months in puncheons, it has bright acidity and clean, nicely focused feel. It is another outstanding Syrah that will evolve for a decade."

located at the mouth of Dutch Henry Canyon. For over 75 years the property was primarily maintained as a farm and plum orchard, with vines intermingled amongst the trees. In 1990, the orchards were replanted to vineyard, where there are currently 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Sirah vines, in addition to a three acre 50+ year old Petite Sirah block that John Peterson helped plant as a child.

The wines are made by the ever-talented Bob Foley, who makes his own wines under the winery name Robert Foley, as well as the wines at Hourglass. He also made the wines at Pride Mountain for 15 years.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes: "Glass staining material, inky dark in color with ripe berry pie and briar aromas. The mid palate is very mouth-coating and the wine resolves with surprisingly gentle, soft tannins in the finish."

in 1906, the old vines from the Frediani vineyard send their roots deep into the rich volcanic soil. Baked in the hot Calistoga sunshine, the few grapes that are given up by these old soldiers reach full maturity and develop all the deep mouthwatering flavors that are possible with the variety.

The trick with Grenache contradicts what all the winemaking textbooks teach as the standard. The general rule is that the longer you leave the fermenting wine in contact with the skins, the more flavor, body and color there will be in the wine. This doesn’t hold true with the large Grenache grapes. If the grapes don’t reach full maturity, the skin contact will just leach out tannin, which can make the wine astringent and bitter. It is more critical with Grenache than most varieties that the grapes reach full maturity. When they do, the color, body and flavors are released quickly. The combination of old vines, rich soils, heat and very small yields guarantee maturity and complexity in all of our vineyard sites.

The soils are so rich that the wines from this heavenly place ooze with deep cocoa, baked brownie lushness, combined with classic cigar box and pepper aromas. On the palate, ripe layers of raspberry, dark chocolate wild plums, apricots, and blackberries mingle with creamy oak and sassafras. This wine is seamless, with great fruit purity, soft tannins and acomplexity that draws you in for another taste.

worthy and savory style that sets them apart. Both 2010 and 2011 are strong here, with the 2010s showing additional depth and concentration and the 2011s showing pretty, elegant profiles. I suspect the 2011s will be on faster evolutionary tracks, but given their balance, they could surprise in the cellar. In addition to their current releases, I was able to do short verticals of their Esprit de Beaucastel (which is now called Esprit de Tablas) and Panoplie. To say I came away impressed would be an understatement.
