life persona, these wines are dead serious and are always some of the best I'm able to taste from the state. All of the Rhone varieties see 100% whole cluster, native fermentations and aging in mostly neutral French oak. At the top end, both the 2012 Royal City Syrah and 2012 Klein Syrah flirted with perfection, but the whole lineup is stacked with both quality and value. I think the 2012s are slightly superior to the '13s, but both of these vintages are strong here."

"Another wine that flirts with perfection is the 2012 Syrah Royal City. From the Stoneridge Vineyard in the Columbia Valley, it offers up a smorgasbord of aromas and flavors, including kirsch and dark fruits, gamy meats, pepper, liquid rock and olive brine. Insanely textured, with full-bodied richness and power, loads of sweet tannin and blockbuster length, give it a year or so and then drink this incredible Syrah over the following decade."

Stolpman is focused on bringing producers together to promote the area. To be sure, Ballard Canyon is a very distinctive region, especially for Syrah, so it will be interesting to see how things develop here in the coming years. As for his own wines, Stolpman's A-list team of winemaker Sashi Moorman and vineyard guru Ruben Solorzano keeps ratcheting up the quality level at the estate. In addition to these wines, I also tasted a few selections from the estate's library, including the 2004 Roussanne L'Avion, Syrah Estate and Syrah Angeli. Although those wines have aged pretty nicely, they also show just how far Stolpman has come in the last few years, especially with regards to cooperage. Simply put, these wines have never been better.

"Explosive and perfumed to the core, the 2012 Syrah Originals captivates all the sense with exuberant perfume and super-intense fruit, all with plenty of underlying structure. Cloves, lavender, mint and an array of spices inform the fragrant, highly expressive finish. The 60% whole clusters are impeccably balanced. This is a gorgeous showing from Stolpman."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - 'In the same ballpark, the 2012 Angeli is 100% Syrah that comes from a single block of own rooted vines. It too is medium to full-bodied, rich and textured, with pretty violets, purple fruits, spring flowers and edgy minerality. Seeing 80% whole clusters and 18 months in puncheons, it has bright acidity and clean, nicely focused feel. It is another outstanding Syrah that will evolve for a decade."

In the glass, 2013 Estate Grown Syrah appears dark crimson in color. The fresh nose is lined with bright cranberry and tangerine notes while on the palate a core of blueberry, raspberry, and cherry rides above a deeper meaty quality and savory touches of clove and anise. The young wine is sharply focused and high toned. On the finish, refined tannin and graphite bring the wine to an elegant, lingering close. With a year in bottle, the nose will continue to blossom and the mid mid-palate will gain more richness

located at the mouth of Dutch Henry Canyon. For over 75 years the property was primarily maintained as a farm and plum orchard, with vines intermingled amongst the trees. In 1990, the orchards were replanted to vineyard, where there are currently 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Sirah vines, in addition to a three acre 50+ year old Petite Sirah block that John Peterson helped plant as a child.

The wines are made by the ever-talented Bob Foley, who makes his own wines under the winery name Robert Foley, as well as the wines at Hourglass. He also made the wines at Pride Mountain for 15 years.

ROBERT PARKER 94 POINTS - "The fabulous, opaque purple-colored 2012 Petite Sirah Peterson Family Vineyard boasts beautiful blueberry, blackberry and blackcurrant fruit notes intertwined with notions of camphor, spring flowers, spice and oak. Full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and super-concentrated, with a skyscraper-like mid-palate and finish, this sensational red can be drunk now, because of its approachability, and over the next 20-25 years."

The backbone of T-Vine's Napa Valley Grenache, their most popular wine, comes from the old vines of the historic Frediani Vineyard. Established just after the San Francisco earthquake Read More...
in 1906, the old vines from the Frediani vineyard send their roots deep into the rich volcanic soil. Baked in the hot Calistoga sunshine, the few grapes that are given up by these old soldiers reach full maturity and develop all the deep mouthwatering flavors that are possible with the variety.

The trick with Grenache contradicts what all the winemaking textbooks teach as the standard. The general rule is that the longer you leave the fermenting wine in contact with the skins, the more flavor, body and color there will be in the wine. This doesn’t hold true with the large Grenache grapes. If the grapes don’t reach full maturity, the skin contact will just leach out tannin, which can make the wine astringent and bitter. It is more critical with Grenache than most varieties that the grapes reach full maturity. When they do, the color, body and flavors are released quickly. The combination of old vines, rich soils, heat and very small yields guarantee maturity and complexity in all of our vineyard sites.

The soils are so rich that the wines from this heavenly place ooze with deep cocoa, baked brownie lushness, combined with classic cigar box and pepper aromas. On the palate, ripe layers of raspberry, dark chocolate wild plums, apricots, and blackberries mingle with creamy oak and sassafras. This wine is seamless, with great fruit purity, soft tannins and acomplexity that draws you in for another taste.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE91 POINTS - "Incorporating more Roussanne in 2012, the 2012 Esprit Blanc de Tablas checks in as 75% Roussanne, 20% Grenache Blanc and 5% Picpoul Blanc, all of which was brought up in larger foudre. Light gold in color, it has a classic Roussanne pear, lemon curd, honeysuckle and white flower-like qualities to go with a medium-bodied, seamless profile on the palate. Starting out lively and fresh, it gains in stature and depth with time in the glass, so a decant is recommended if drinking soon. I’d drink bottles over the coming 2-3 years, but it will have at least a decade of evolution."

the entry-level bottlings, so readers are well-advised to stash a few bottles away, assuming they have patience and storage space. Please note that the flagship Esprit de Beaucastel bottling is now called Esprit de Tablas because, as Collins and Jason Haas have pointed out, "Tablas Creek stands on its own now and shouldn't have to lean on the Beaucastel name any more."

"Green-tinged yellow. Ripe pear and nectarine aromas show very good depth and clarity, turning spicier with air. Smooth, warm and open-knit, offering an array of pit and citrus fruit flavors that tighten up on the back half. A floral note comes up on the fragrant, focused, fruity finish."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "Probably the leanest example of this cuvee I've tasted, the 2013 Esprit de Tablas Blanc checks in as 71% Roussanne, 21% Grenache Blanc and 8% Picpoul that saw 10 months in mostly neutral foudre. It offers pretty, salty minerality in its leafy herbs, citrus and stone fruits to go with a medium-bodied, juicy, straightforward (by this cuvee's standards anyway) personality. This cuvee has a long track record of aging gracefully, but I'd lean toward drinking this over the coming 4-5 years."

In addition, I was able to do a full 2005 retrospective, but will publish that as a stand-alone report at a later date."

"Still not bottled, the 2013 Esprit de Tablas (40% Mourvedre, 28% Syrah, 22% Grenache and 10% Counoise) reveals a deep ruby color to go with lots of kirsch, black cherries, rose petal and underbrush. Tablas Creek are nothing new (but they are still exciting), their Patelin bottlings are new. This blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Counoise comes from their Westside Paso neighbors who have planted vineyards using Tablas clones.

In theory, this Patelin red should be tight, young, and tart…but on the contrary, this wine is rich, concentrated and immensely delicious. In fact, our buyer wouldn't spit this wine out! Deep ruby/garnet in color, the nose is loaded with Asian spices, raspberry, black cherry, and orange marmalade while the palate follows suit and adds hints of grilled meats, graphite, and cocoa. Rich, flavorful, and with silky tannins, this is a great value in wine, and one that just may make you ask yourself why you haven't tried these wines before!

of budwood. Some of these vineyards had unclaimed grapes, and since the quality was high, Tablas Creek stepped in and began to produce this "hometown" bottling.

The Tablas Creek Vineyard Patelin de Tablas Blanc is a blend of four white Rhône varietals: Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne, and Marsanne. The wine incorporates fruit from eleven top Rhone vineyards in Paso Robles, each vineyard selected for its quality. Like many white wines from the Southern Rhône, it is based on the crisp acids and rich mouthfeel of Grenache Blanc, with Viognier added for floral, tropical aromatics, and small additions of Roussanne and Marsanne for structure.

A blend of 54% Grenache Blanc, 25% Viognier, 13% Roussanne, and 8% Marsanne, The 2014 Patelin de Tablas Blanc shows fruity, floral aromas of honeysuckle, apricot and candied grapefruit, with a spicy mineral note emerging with air. In the mouth it's mouth-filling with peach and lemon zest flavors and a creamy texture, but kept fresh by vibrant acids. The finish is long, rich and clean, with lingering flavors of peach and mineral. Drink now and for the next 2-3 years.

Michel Gassier and Philippe Cambie! They have combined their decades of experience to produce a wine that demonstrates why Washington State is one of the best growing regions in the world for Syrah!

Approximately 10% of the lots were fermented as whole clusters, with the remaining lots fermented as de-stemmed grapes. The inclusion of stems during fermentation contributes earthy, savory aromas and flavors that perfectly complement the pure fruit character of the grapes. To further enhance these complexities, about 13% of the lots also underwent extended maceration. After fermentation, a majority of the young wine was placed into neutral French oak barrels for aging, with the remainder aged in tight-grained new French and American oak barrels. The use of neutral and tighter-grained barrels helps to preserve the unique character of the wine itself.

The Pundit expresses finesse and balance, uniting a traditional Rhône style with all the attitude of the great Columbia Valley wines. You’ll never look at Washington Syrah the same way again! A blend of 94% Syrah, 3% Grenache, 2% Mourvèdre, and 1% Viognier (co-fermented with Syrah), this wine shows a dark color with bright ruby highlights. Intense nose of dark cherry, cocoa, vanilla and hints of black truffles. The mouth feel is unctuous, with flavors of candied plum, cherry pie and vanilla. The finish is soft and seamless.

WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS - "Strikes a good balance between the ripe, dark flavors and crisp, lively structure, presenting a sleek core of plum and smoky tea flavors. Best from 2017 through 2020."

The only wine to see new oak, it spends roughly 11-16 months in 40% new French oak prior to bottling. It offers incredible notes of graphite, olive tapenade, white pepper and decadent levels of black raspberry that flow beautifully to a full-bodied Syrah that has a huge mid-palate, plenty of tannin and a monster finish.
