bottlings (like Les Galets, Beautiful Earth and Right Hand Man), but he also has a few barrels of Syrah that are absolutely delicious, but just don’t quite fit into any of these existing wines. At that point in time, the light goes off in our buyer’s head. ”Hey Mac, why don’t we work on a blend with these barrels for Hi-Time’s limited run of Rock Garden wines?” Mac totally agreed.

They worked on blending specific amounts from certain barrels and came up with a few more-than-worthy candidates. But Mac, whose heart is as big as they come, pulled a barrel away from one of his premium wines because he wanted to be sure that our Rock Garden wine was a hit. We tasted this new blend…BOOM! Rock Garden Syrah is here to rock your world!

The wine is a blend of fruit comprised of 80% from Camp 4 Vineyard and 20% Kymsi Vineyard, two properties in the Santa Ynez Valley. Camp Four is in the eastern part of the valley, where it is very warm to downright hot, and brings rich, dense fruit to the wine. Kymsi is in Ballard Canyon, the middle of Santa Ynez Valley, and brings black fruit, structure and spice. In addition to the Syrah, 5% Viognier was co-fermented with the Syrah. This helps to create darker color, lifted aromatics and a more approachable wine.

When this wine was popped open for the wine staff, more than one remarked that this may be our best wine of the month ever! Dark garnet in color with a purple hue, the nose is chocked full of plums, boysenberry, blackberry, baking spice, white pepper, and grilled meat. On the palate the wine is juicy, but not overpowering, possessing good freshness and lift, with fresh fruit compote, soy, a mélange of blue and black fruit, with a hint of raspberry, bacon, and graphite. Velvety, fleshy, and with a long lasting finish, this is a steal of a wine!

This is one of our best wine of the months ever!

Winemaker's Notes: "The re-incarnation of its 2005 predecessor, it represents many of the things I love about Syrah – that mysterious darkness, exotic and brooding characteristics, strength and smooth charm that only Syrah manages to combine into one package. This warrants (a) some cellaring or a thorough decantation, and (b) a serious meal – yes, grilled meats are always the easy candidates, but for those less inclined to go that route, anything earthy will do – roasted root vegetables, mushrooms, bean stews, other stews, a roasted chicken. The point is, these 2011s are interesting wines; reward them with something more interesting than a ribeye (maybe some venison - medium rare!)

We finished the tasting with the Pilgrim Syrah, which incorporates a splash of Viognier and comes from the Bien Nacido and John Sebastiano vineyards. The 2011 Syrah Pilgrim is a beauty, especially in the vintage. It's even more impressive as the wine was just bottled two weeks prior to this tasting. Possessing fabulous complexity, with pretty white pepper, spiced meats, ground herbs and plenty of dark fruit, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, solid underlying structure and focused finish. The acidity is nicely integrated, there's solid mid-palate depth and the tannin, while noticeable, is polished and ripe, all suggesting this will evolve gracefully. Enjoy bottles over the coming 7-8 years."

"The Offering" is comprised of 48% Grenache, 34% Syrah, 17% Mouvedre and 1% Viognier, aged in new, once-used, and neutral French oak. The grapes came from several notable vineyards in Santa Barbara County, including Larner, Bien Nacido, White Hawk, and Watch Hill. The 2012 Offering shows aromas and flavors of flowers, blueberries, cream, wet earth, boysenberry, raspberry, camphor, and white pepper.

The Cotes du Coast bottling is Curt's take on a white Rhone blend. Comprised of 54% Viognier, 19% Roussanne, 15% Grenache Blanc, and 12% Marsanne, the wine was fermented in both new and used French oak barrels.

Curt's Tasting Notes: "The mottled and boon-like light stretching through March cloud cover on the Oregon coast through a cozy open window: rubbed sage, orange zest, wet moss, peach blossom and a whisper of talc are supported by a quilt of cottage warmth: spice cake, brioche, dew heavy wind, night jasmine and rare pearl green tea. The Alta Mesa block of the Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard is in many ways the heart of Sans Liege, it is far-off, unknown and alluring. Aged for 22 months in new, once-used, and neutral French oak barrels, this is a dark, penetrating and dancing wine, and is a testament to the deep power the vineyard holds. We find scents of elderflowers, dessert sand, blackberry, and plum pie. Rustic and juicy at the same time, notes of clove, mint tea, and cherry are evident on the palate.

The majority of this Grenache came from vineyards in the an area the Paso Robles locals call the Templeton Gap. This area benefits from the warm summer days, and the cooling winds that scream over the Santa Lucia Mountains and fan over this particular area. This smells of preserved cherries, Sandalwood, Ceylon tea, rose petals, cinnamon, Peaberry coffee bean and cognac, while the flavors are of chocolate, nutmeg, caraway, plum and mint.

The Prophetess is a blend of some of Curt's most prized lots. To make this wine spectacular, Curt gives no preference to vintage. This is evident as the wine is a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Mourvedre, of which 70% comes from the 2012 vintage and 30% comes from the 2011 vintage. He is blending fruit from some of the best vineyards in California's Central Coast, including Bien Nacido, Les Galets, White Hawk, Alta Mesa, and Alta Colina! The wine was aged from 22-34 months in a combination of new and neutral barriques.

Tasting this wine is like busting open a pinata in your mouth, as the wine shows blackberry cola, preserved plums, candied bacon, black chocolates, and tiny bottles of anise liqueur. Robust yet definitely drinkable now, the wine finishes with fine-grained tannins and blueberry cobbler.

This is the "stepping stone" into the Sans Liege world of wines. The Transcendentalist is a multi-vintage blend from several distict vineyards in California's Central Coast, including Alta Mesa, Larner, Bien Nacido, White Hawk, Laetitia, Alta Colina, Watch Hill, Old Potrero, and Black Ridge. The wine is comprised of 46% Syrah, 41% Grenache, and 13% Mourvedre from the 2011, 2012, and 2013 vintages. The wine begins with aromas and flavors of chocolate covered cherries, elderflower liqueur, black licorice, soft maple candies, blood orange, Juniper berry, cinnamon bark, bergamot, nag champa and cherry hookah smoke.
