in French oak. It too has fantastic purity in its creme de cassis, vanilla bean and toasted spice-driven aromatics. It's a full-bodied, rich and textured effort that has solid mid-palate depth and ripe tannin on the finish. While from a difficult vintage, you wouldn't know it by tasting it, and it will continue to impress through 2020."

the nose, with majestic flavors of strawberries, currants, black cherries, sandalwood, and touch of rawhide in the mouth. Ripe, rich, and full-bodied, yet still shows acid on the finish. The modest tannin, good structure, and lively make this a great food wine!

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - "I always look forward to tasting McPrice Myers's wines, as they are so full of character and personality. That is certainly the case with these 2011s and 2010s. As always, the wines are bold, rich and juicy. Readers will also want to take a look at the wines Myers makes under his Barrel 27 label, which are reviewed separately here. Those wines also deliver plenty of personality, but at lower price points."

"The 2011 L'Ange Rouge is gorgeous in this vintage, even if it needs time for some of the slightly rough edges to melt away further in bottle. Dark red cherries, pomegranate, spices and tobacco all emerge over time. The 2011 is another striking, hugely appealing wines from McPrice Myers. The medium-bodied style is best suited for drinking over the next handful of years. Drinking window: 2014 - 2018."

ROBERT PARKER'S THE WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "These 2010s and 2011s from McPrice are straight up fantastic. Very classy and pure, they all benefitted from substantial air time and deserve another year or two in the cellar. In addition to delivering rock-star quality, they also represent superb values. This is another Paso Robles producer who has consistently produced outstanding wines that remain more than reasonably priced given their quality. They merit serious attention!"

"Moving to the 2011 reds, and one of the more southern Rhone styled Grenache blends coming out of California, the 2011 Grenache l’Ange Rouge offers up beautiful kirsch liqueur, garrigue, spice and basil-like nuances as well as a medium to full-bodied, nicely focused and structured palate. There’s some tannin to resolve, yet it’s sweet and well integrated. Enjoy this beauty over the coming 4-6 years. Drink now-2019."

The 2011 McPrice Myers Terre Blanche is an outstanding blend of 80% Roussanne and 20% Viognier. It shows superb aromas of ripe pear, mineral, hazelnut and citrus rind to go with a medium-bodied, silky, yet energetic palate. While there’s lots of fruit here, the overall impression is of purity and class. Enjoy it over the coming 2-3 years. Drink now-2016."

Both of his late release 2011s showed beautifully, and the 2012s are a step up. The 2012s buck the vintage stereotype and have enough tannin and concentration to warrant short-term cellaring. In addition, these efforts always have a savory, structured style that should appeal to both Old and New World wine lovers.

"Another great 2012, the 2012 Beautiful Earth (78% Syrah, 14% Grenache and 8% Mourvedre) has an inky purple color that-s followed by ample blackberry, blueberry, pepper, earth, mineral and hints of violets. This full-bodied, layered and seamless effort has awesome intensity and richness, notable purity of fruit and a big finish that stays focused and clean. Aged 16 months in 50% new French, give it a year and drink through 2024."

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - "The Syrah-based wines are the highlights among this year's new releases from McPrice Myers. At their best, the wines are racy, beautifully layered and full of nuance. Only the Ange Rouge is less expressive than normal, but it has also just been bottled.

"The 2012 Beautiful Earth is a gorgeous. Layered and beautifully balanced in the glass, the 2012 graces the palate with dark red cherry, plum, smoke and leather. All the elements are very nicely melded together. The 2012 finishes with substantial depth and polish. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine from McPrice Myers. The blend is 78% Syrah, 14% Grenache and 14% Mourvèdre. Drinking window: 2014 - 2022."

The 2012 Syrah Estate Verna’s offers a vibrant purple color to go with a full-bodied, seamless and layered profile. Blackberry, cassis, tobacco leaf, beef blood and hints of iron emerge from this stunner that should drink nicely for 4-5 years, if not longer. All from Melville’s Verna Vineyard, 100% Syrah, 70% destemmed and aged 11 months in neutral oak, it’s a no-brainer purchase and don’t miss it.

Winemaker Greg Brewer and grower Chad Melville continue to knock it out of the park with these Melville releases. Focusing on site, if not plot, specific releases, neutral oak, no SO2 until racking and varying degrees of whole cluster are the norm here. The wines have individual characters and, stylistically, lean toward the more complex, finesse-driven side of the spectrum. They “wow” more for their balance and nuance than their power and richness. They also remain reasonably priced!”

Melville has become a nucleus for Rhone varietals from Santa Rita Hills. Nestled in the heart of Santa Barbara County, Melville has always focused on their vineyards, knowing that the vineyard is where great wine begins! After studying at U.C. Davis, brothers Brent & Chad, who manage the family’s estate vineyards, focused on giving winemaker Greg Brewer (also of Brewer-Clifton fame) the best fruit they could possibly produce. In turn, Greg has crafted wines that receive high scores and rave reviews year-in and year-out…and this year is no different! As always, their Verna’s Vineyard Syrah is a prodigious effort; Medium-bodied & richly nuanced, from black pepper to bacon fat!

windier then Melville's Sta. Rita Hills property during the growing season, this estate has proven wellsuited for growing this aromatic Rhone varietal. The fruit was gently whole cluster pressed, transferred to neutral barrels (5-20 year French oak), cold-fermented at 45°F for three months and prepared for bottling in late March. Cold fermentation, neutral vessels and the avoidance of malo-lactic fermentation were employed to retain the wine’s freshness and exotic expressions. Yields were 3.2 lbs/vine (3.0 tons/acre).

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "The 2013 Viognier Estate Verna’s is another outstanding effort from Greg that also represents a smoking value. Giving up classic apricot, pineapple and loads of floral qualities (almost a flower oil-like quality) to go with a medium-bodied, unctuously textured, yet still surprisingly fresh and focused style on the palate. Aged 6 months in neutral oak, it’s an impressive Viognier to enjoy over the coming year or two."

Intense and vibrant, with tropical fruit and apricots, this richly balanced wine is a show stopper, and a great alternative for those who love a full-bodied Chardonnay! We’re always amazed by Miner’s across-the-board quality. This is frankly an exceptional Viognier. Aromatically complex withcitrus and honeysuckle on the nose and a satiny, fleshy feel on the palate. Vibrant flavors of tropical fruit and exotic flowers characterize this ever-so-alluringly white wine. a section of Andrew's father-in-law's property. He chose a relatively rare French clone of Viognier (simply known as 642) because he admire the qualities of Condrieu (French Viognier).

The cool, breezy days and chilly, foggy nights allow the Viognier grapes to achieve wonderfully ripe flavors without the typical high alcohol of Viognier. The wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel to avoid any external influences on the wine other than variety and vineyard location. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and then fermented at very cold temperatures to retain as much freshness as possible. The dominant flavors and aromas are of apricots, peaches, honey, and a subtle citrus edge. In the mouth, the wine is lush and rich with an incredibly long finish. Only 500 cases produced! A true “Garagiste”, Nicolas epitomizes the French term that signifies a passionate small-lot vintner who doesn’t care much for following the rules. In true Garagiste form, Nicora wines are made in a boutique winery near his greatest supporters.

Notes from Winemaker Nicolas Elliot: "This wine is a blend of 48% Grenache, 44% Syrah and 8% Mourvedre, with the fruit coming from La Vista, Law, and Russell Family vineyards. The GSM (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre) blend gives me the most flexibility to create something that is unique and reflective of the vintage. It is always my favorite wine to craft. For 2012, the Grenache was aged in concrete, the Syrah in French oak barrels, and the Mourvedre was fermented 50% whole cluster and then aged in a once-used puncheon barrel. The mixture of different vineyards and winemaking techniques always keeps this wine interesting. With a bright and rich mouth-feel, the GSM 2012 is seamless and has great texture. Profiles of rose petal, dusty cocoa and plum make this wine intriguing yet focused, with a very lengthy finish of caramel. This wine is showing very well right now after a three hour decant, and will continue to age gracefully for the next 7-10 years."

Notes from Winemaker Nicolas Elliot: "The Undisclosed was made with a lot of the same thought process that goes into the red wines I produce. The Viognier was picked very ripe and has all of the wonderful aromatic and viscous qualities that I look for in a Paso Robles Viognier. The Roussanne was picked with a bit more restraint and provides the backbone of the acidity while adding unique stone fruit flavors. This wine is very rich in taste yet still vibrant enough to enjoy on a summer day. On the nose and palate, there are amazing tropical-fruit qualities that remind me of mango, dried pineapple, and wet stone. These are coupled with pear, honey and apricot that is most likely from the Roussanne component. Even early in its youth, this wine is showing very well and will continue to age for many years to come. My best guess is that this wine will easily hold up for 5 years or more. This wine has gone through full malolactic fermentation adding to it's richness. This is very limited in production."

like GKG Cabernet Sauvignon and Stanton Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon out of Oakville. A handful of years back, Dave made this Petite Syrah-driven blend called Machete that blew our minds, showcasing loads of black fruits, hints of chocolate with this seamless texture from front to back, ending with lip-smacking, chewy yet integrated tannins…. The wine seemed to have disappeared just as quickly as it was released with everyone clamoring for more! Yet for some reason the bottling was not reproduced in the subsequent vintages much to the dismay of Orin Swift followers.

Out of the blue last spring, we heard through the grapevine that Dave was resurrecting the Machete label with a 2012 offering and it would be released by summer. After much anticipation, the wine arrived in racy new packaging but after uncorking a bottle we were pleasantly surprised that the wine was reminiscent to our cataloged memory of the original and over-delivered for its price point! Well, now we have a limited amount of the 2013 vintage which for California was an outstanding year even better than the 2012 growing season.

This wine is a very limited production and will disappear before you read about it in a wine publication / magazine. We recommend ordering while you can!

Characteristics of this release as described by Dave - “An opaque, purple chroma is brilliantly on display in the glass. An alluring fragrance of bright floral notes, violet juxtaposed with intriguing mountain characteristics. The entry is big, dark, and brooding with concentrated berry flavors, black cherry, mocha, and delightful earthy, brambly notes. Soft and lush, the tannins are sublime which offsets a pleasing mineral finish.”

Please note: Machete is bottled with 12 different lables....yes, 12. So the bottle you receive may not be the bottle in the picture.
