Starting as a cellar worker, his experience includes working alongside esteemed winemakers such as Bob Tillman of Alta Colina, Eric Jensen of Booker Vineyards and currently Scott Hawley of Torrin. By working and learning the "tricks of the trade," he has honed his own skills and applied the best attributes to his own style of winemaking.

Nicora’s small-lot Rhone-style wines are finely crafted to consistently represent the terroir of the vineyard. Each vintage is a blend of the highest quality Rhone varietals sourced from Paso Robles’ reputable Westside vineyards. A true “Garagiste”, Nicolas epitomizes the French term that signifies a passionate small-lot vintner who doesn’t care much for following the rules. In true Garagiste form, Nicora wines are made in a boutique winery near his greatest supporters.

The GSM 2011 is a blend of 59% Syrah, 24% Grenache, and 17% Mourvedre, with the fruit coming from La Vista, Law, Alta Colina, and Carina vineyards. The 2011 growing season was much cooler than usual in Paso Robles, and consequently the GSM 2011 is particularly elegant, with a Northern Rhone element that is persistent throughout the wine. However, it also brings together a lot of the great qualities for which Paso Robles is known. This full bodied blend has a dark fruit profile that is laced with blackberry jam and licorice. Small nuances of tar, resin, and finally a slight caramel aspect rounds out the wine. When decanted, this wine opens up nicely, and it should age for at least 7-10 years.

"Starting off the reds and spending 17 months in barrel, the inky-colored 2011 Syrah offers up a deep, decadent profile of smoked black fruits, lavender, bacon fat and crushed flowers on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, rich and mouth-filling on the palate, with juicy, integrated acidity, this knockout Syrah is a joy to drink now, yet should evolve gracefully through 2017. Drink now-2017."

right fruit for the unique blend they wanted to create. But in 2010, the proverbial stars aligned, and they hit “pay dirt”! The wine is comprised of 38% Grenache, 27% Zinfandel and 20% Syrah, with Mourvedre and Petit Sirah rounding out the blend. Aged in barrel for 18 months, this is everything we have come to expect from McPrice Myers and Barrel 27, showing cherry and strawberry from the Grenache dominating the aromas. The dark, black fruit of the Zinfandel, Syrah, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah play an obvious supporting role in this five-varietal heritage blend. This wine is complex; it erupts with endless blueberry, blackberry and anise. The tannins are well-managed and a perfect match for this ripe and generous Paso Robles red wine. Only 500 cases made!

The 2012 vintage was a classic, a near perfect growing season. The mild summer and warm weather after verasion caused the fruit to development with classic balance; great flavors, good acidity, and mature tannins. This Grenache Blanc was fermented in both stainless steel drums and tanks. Native yeasts fermented the wine at a controlled 60 degrees F. When primary fermentation was complete, The wine was sulfured to prevent Malolactic fermentation. Then, the balance of the wine in tank was barreled down into Stainless steel drums and about 10% neutral French oak. The wine was aged on the lees for 5 months, and stirred once a week until bottling.

This wine has bright aromas of melons and honeysuckle. The palette is crisp with good acidity, a touch of tannins, and bright stone fruits. This wine unique wine from the Eastern hills of the napa valley showcases the diversity of our property.

and Grenache Blanc, the 2012 Blindfold is a sleeper of the vintage. Reminiscent of the Sine Qua Non whites from further south, it bursts with honeyed, caramelized white fruits, rose petals and pineapple. Medium to full-bodied with good acidity, brilliant purity and a delineation that is uncommon for a wine with so much flavor, this beauty should drink well for 2-3 years. I hope we see more blends such as this.”

After years of amazing and envious success with their red blend, Prisoner has finally a white wine! Keeping in line with their roots, they have sourced from prominent, high quality vineyards throughout California, and this is downright fantastic! Created to provide the perfect white wine companion to The Prisoner, Blindfold is bold and intriguing. In establishing our own spin on a white blend, winemaker Jen Beloz and her team sought out interesting Rhône and aromatic varietals that would nicely compliment a classic Chardonnay base. Through partnering with growers who are dedicated to cultivating alternative varietals in their outstanding vineyards throughout California, the result is a wine that is complex and delicious.

the nuances that are alive in the glass. Because of its proximity to the Pacific and the cool vintage, the Platt is a bit compact and tightly wound at this stage. Readers should give the 2011 another year or two in bottle to start unwinding. Wild flowers, almonds and mint are layered into the finish. There is a lot to look forward to here."

ROBERT PARKER 92+ POINTS - "David Ramey has long had one of the most impressive resumes for any California winemaker. He worked at Chateau Petrus in Bordeaux and for Christian Moueix at Dominus. He also consulted and worked for a number of high end Napa Valley wineries. Of course, his first love is Ramey Wine Cellars, and he has built an extensive empire of Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignons and more recently Syrahs as well as a tiny quantity of Pinot Noir (talk about going to the dark side). I tasted through his 2011 Chardonnays, which are successful in this challenging vintage. The generic Chardonnays spend 12 months in 25% new oak and the single vineyard cuvees spend 20 or more months in 50% new oak. All of the whites are fermented with indigenous yeasts. Ramey has also done a terrific job with Syrah, even though he says it is nearly impossible to sell in today’s marketplace. Ramey has actually reduced the price on his two fabulous 2010 Syrahs, and it is difficult for somebody like me who loves Syrah and knows how great they can be to understand how these wines can be such a challenge in the marketplace. Ramey’s early experience was primarily with Bordeaux varietals, so it’s not surprising that he continues to do a stunning job with his assortment of Bordeaux-based wines. As one might expect, the 2011s are soft, easy-to-drink efforts that many consumers may find more appealing than the 2010s, which are much bigger, richer and more classic.

"I was also impressed by the 2011 Chardonnay Platt Vineyard. Cropped at one ton of fruit per acre (Ramey told me the grapes looked like petits pois from France), and from one of the coldest sites in his portfolio, it exhibits lively notes of lemon oil, lime skins, white peaches and a touch of honey. This fresh, medium-bodied, concentrated 2011 should drink well for 4-5 years."

one from the historic Park Muscatine Vineyard on Howell Mountain, and a Napa Valley Petite Sirah from the valley floor. Their wines embody the concept of “terroir”, a wine’s expression of the place of origin in the bottle, and an old world winemaking style that Mike learned from his dad, Randy.

When Mike and Kara decided to make a wine of their own, they knew that they wanted to honor the history of the vineyard as well as their families foundations in the Napa Valley wine industry. The historic Park Muscatine vineyard on Howell Mountain was chosen in part because Mike has known this vineyard since his childhood, pruning the vineyard in winter, and harvesting the fruit in the fall. With its scant ton per acre production, this vineyard is a gem. They chose the Retro name to pay hommage to the generational groundwork that’s been laid for their endeavor.

ANTONIO GALLONI 92+ POINTS - "Retro’s 2009 Petite Sirah Howell Mountain has come together beautifully over the last few months. Some of the early wildness that was present six months ago has subsided and been replaced by silky tannins for Petite. The exuberance and intensity of the fruit are there, but today the 2009 comes across as a bit compact. My sense is that the wine is going through a bit of a closed stage, as it was fabulous a few months ago."
