cluster (pigeage as it is sorted into T Bin), and fermented on wild yeast, 4-5 weeks on skins. Estrella and Shiraz clones of Syrah, Grenache Clone 814, and Mourvedre clone 369. The trace amount of Roussanne in this blend was co-fermented with the syrah. Aged 18 months in new and neutral French oak, the final blend is 48% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, and 2% Roussanne.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "This was another superb set of wines by winemaker Mark Adams, who is the assistant winemaker at Saxum. In addition to getting some grapes from Justin's James Berry Vineyard, he has an estate vineyard that's located just west of James Berry, in an east-facing, cool terroir. Harvest from this site normally stretches into late October, and the wines show the cooler nature of the site, with gamey, northern Rhone-like aromas and textures. This is an up-and-coming estate that needs to be on everyone's radar!

"The 2012 Vineyard Drive is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Roussanne that spent 18 months in a combination of new and neutral French and Hungarian oak barrels. It possess a Rhone-like style with its peppery underbrush, graphite and sweet berry fruit. This is followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich, yet structured and tannic wine that will require 1-2 years in the cellar, and evolve nicely through 2022."

out before it hits the shelf! Here, Matt sticks with white Rhône varietals, blending together 57% Grenache Blanc, 20% Picpoul Blanc, 14% Viognier and 9% Roussanne. The first two varietals bring fresh, lively, and zippy notes, while the Viognier brings aromatics, and the Roussanne weight. You end up with a wine that’s got more body than a Sauvignon Blanc, but it’s not quite as heavy as a Chardonnay. This wine is extremely aromatic, with a bouquet and flavors of honeysuckle, acacia flowers, pears, flint apple, and citrus. Medium- to full-bodied, yet fresh, clean and amazing, this might be one of the best white wines to come out of Paso Robles!

other than Pisoni itself. The Syrahs are the clear highlights among these 2012s. Over the last few years Jeff and Mark Pisoni have been experimenting with whole clusters, an approach that seems to bring layers of dimension and complexity to the wines. In 2012, all three Syrahs are exceptional.

"A deep, implosive wine, the 2012 Syrah Garys' Vineyard hits the palate with serious depth and power. Here, it is the density of the fruit that stands out most. The Garys' was fermented in oak uprights, with about 70% whole clusters, an approach that is paying off nicely. Today, the 2012 is a bit muscular and tightly wound, so I suggest giving the wine another 6-12 months in bottle."

ANTONIO GALLONI 94 POINTS - "This is a gorgeous set of wines from Lucia, the Pisoni family's label for all of their wines that emerge from vineyards other than Pisoni itself. The Syrahs are the clear highlights among these 2012s. Over the last few years Jeff and Mark Pisoni have been experimenting with whole clusters, an approach that seems to bring layers of dimension and complexity to the wines. In 2012, all three Syrahs are exceptional.

"Lavender, violets, plums, black cherries all jump from the glass in the 2012 Syrah Soberanes Vineyard. A stunning, pulsating wine, the 2012 impresses for its nuance and overall harmony. Sage, mint, orange peel and rosemary are some of the notes that flesh out on the super-impressive finish. The purity of the fruit here is simply striking. The Soberanes was done with 100% whole clusters, which works beautifully here."

"The 2012 Syrah Susan's Hill emerges from a parcel within the Pisoni vineyard. Tar, smoke, game, incense and black stone fruits hit the palate with massive intensity and pure power. A broad, ample style of Syrah, the Susan's Hill is all about depth and resonance. The 45% whole clusters are very nicely integrated."

the nose, with majestic flavors of strawberries, currants, black cherries, sandalwood, and touch of rawhide in the mouth. Ripe, rich, and full-bodied, yet still shows acid on the finish. The modest tannin, good structure, and lively make this a great food wine!

ROBERT PARKER'S THE WINE ADVOCATE 91+ POINTS - "These 2010s and 2011s from McPrice are straight up fantastic. Very classy and pure, they all benefitted from substantial air time and deserve another year or two in the cellar. In addition to delivering rock-star quality, they also represent superb values. This is another Paso Robles producer who has consistently produced outstanding wines that remain more than reasonably priced given their quality. They merit serious attention!

"While I reviewed these 2010s last year for the Rhone Report, I was able to retaste the wines for this report and have updated the notes and scores where needed. A blend of all Grenache and McPrice’s take on a Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the 2010 Grenache L’Ange Rouge is semi-opaque in color and offers up a perfumed, complex array of garrigue, sweet cherries, pepper and licorice that flows to a full-bodied, textured and lively palate. Quite fresh, with a solid core of acidity, as well as ripe tannin, it should be given another year or two in bottle and then consumed over the following 4-6 years. Drink now-2019."

In our opinion, Mac Myers makes some of the best Syrahs from California’s Central Coast, and judging by how full our wine bar is when we have a McPrice Myers / Barrel 27 tasting, you do, too! Read More...
A few years ago, we were at his winery, tasting through dozens of barrels, and he showed us the fruit from one of his latest vineyard sources. As amazing as his wines are, this new stuff from Kymsi Vineyard in Ballard Canyon was head and shoulders better than everything else! This Lil’ Man bottling is a wine to celebrate his firstborn son, and the fruit from Kymsi is the backbone of this wine. It’s a blend of 86% Syrah, 8% Grenache, 4% Mourvedre, and 2% Viognier, and while this has been only available at the winery, we managed to snag a few cases!

Opaque garnet in color with a dark purple hue, the wine shows aromas and flavors of blackberry, black plum, soy sauce, boysenberry, white pepper, licorice, créme de cassis, smoked meats, pencil shavings and graphite. Framed by good acidity and chewy yet approachable tannins, this rich, complex and utterly seductive wine is drinkable now, but should age for another 10-15 years! This is perhaps the best McPrice Myers wine we've ever tasted!

The 2011 McPrice Myers Terre Blanche is an outstanding blend of 80% Roussanne and 20% Viognier. While there’s lots of fruit here, the overall impression is of purity and class. Enjoy it over the coming 2-3 years. Drink now-2016."

Both of his late release 2011s showed beautifully, and the 2012s are a step up. The 2012s buck the vintage stereotype and have enough tannin and concentration to warrant short-term cellaring. In addition, these efforts always have a savory, structured style that should appeal to both Old and New World wine lovers.

"Another great 2012, the 2012 Beautiful Earth (78% Syrah, 14% Grenache and 8% Mourvedre) has an inky purple color that-s followed by ample blackberry, blueberry, pepper, earth, mineral and hints of violets. This full-bodied, layered and seamless effort has awesome intensity and richness, notable purity of fruit and a big finish that stays focused and clean. Aged 16 months in 50% new French, give it a year and drink through 2024."

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - "The Syrah-based wines are the highlights among this year's new releases from McPrice Myers. At their best, the wines are racy, beautifully layered and full of nuance. Only the Ange Rouge is less expressive than normal, but it has also just been bottled.

"The 2012 Beautiful Earth is a gorgeous. Layered and beautifully balanced in the glass, the 2012 graces the palate with dark red cherry, plum, smoke and leather. All the elements are very nicely melded together. The 2012 finishes with substantial depth and polish. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine from McPrice Myers. The blend is 78% Syrah, 14% Grenache and 14% Mourvèdre. Drinking window: 2014 - 2022."

WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - Looking at the three Syrahs, these are all incredible efforts that go screaming past anything else even close to this price point. Read More...
The 2012 Syrah Estate Verna’s offers a vibrant purple color to go with a full-bodied, seamless and layered profile. Blackberry, cassis, tobacco leaf, beef blood and hints of iron emerge from this stunner that should drink nicely for 4-5 years, if not longer. All from Melville’s Verna Vineyard, 100% Syrah, 70% destemmed and aged 11 months in neutral oak, it’s a no-brainer purchase and don’t miss it.

Winemaker Greg Brewer and grower Chad Melville continue to knock it out of the park with these Melville releases. Focusing on site, if not plot, specific releases, neutral oak, no SO2 until racking and varying degrees of whole cluster are the norm here. The wines have individual characters and, stylistically, lean toward the more complex, finesse-driven side of the spectrum. They “wow” more for their balance and nuance than their power and richness. They also remain reasonably priced!”

Melville has become a nucleus for Rhone varietals from Santa Rita Hills. Nestled in the heart of Santa Barbara County, Melville has always focused on their vineyards, knowing that the vineyard is where great wine begins! After studying at U.C. Davis, brothers Brent & Chad, who manage the family’s estate vineyards, focused on giving winemaker Greg Brewer (also of Brewer-Clifton fame) the best fruit they could possibly produce. In turn, Greg has crafted wines that receive high scores and rave reviews year-in and year-out…and this year is no different! As always, their Verna’s Vineyard Syrah is a prodigious effort; Medium-bodied & richly nuanced, from black pepper to bacon fat!
