licorice and plums build to the imposing, brooding finish. A huge, intense wine, the 2013 possesses striking richness, depth and pure, explosive energy, but it is also going to require at least a few years of cellaring, as it is incredibly forbidding at this stage."

ROBERT PARKER 95-97 POINTS - "The mystical John Kongsgaard came out of the Newton winemaking factory where he was mentored by the great Michel Rolland. However, he has had his own operation for many years in the cool Coombsville hills east of the town of Napa. He also uses purchased fruit from some of Napa’s finest growers, particularly the Hudson Vineyard. His estate includes six acres on Atlas Peak and six acres in Coombsville, and he is in the process of clearing another tract for planting. Although his total acreage is small, the wines are artisanal, individualistic and filled with personality and flavor. Anyone who believes Kongsgaard wines are too alcoholic or rich is missing out on some of the world’s most pleasure-filled and complex elixirs."

"Not to be forgotten is the Côte Rôtie-like Syrah (about 300 cases). The full-bodied 2013 Syrah exhibits lots of charcuterie, roasted meat, smoked duck, spring flower, black raspberry and blackberry characteristics. I know of no other Syrah that is remotely similar in style. It tastes like a Côte Rôtie on steroids. Drink now through 2025."

already known to have a greater day-to-night temperature swing than any other in California. Calcareous soils with high lime content make these vineyards the best of the best. John Crossland at Vineyard Professional Services, with input from the Laws and winemaker Scott Hawley, designed and planted the thirty-two acres of Rhone varietals in 2008. Eighty percent of the vineyard is planted in multiple clones of Grenache and Syrah with smaller blocks of Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Carignane and Tempranillo. Sustainable farming with minimal applications results in premium fruit.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "Located in one of the warmer terroirs in the appellation, with the wines made by Scott Hawley, Law Estate fashions ripe, textured, yet always balanced wines that are a joy to drink. While 2012 was far from a slam dunk for the region, this estate has turned out a bevy of beautiful wines. However, I was surprised to see the lack of color and more open-knit style of the Grenache releases."

"The GSM blend 2012 Sagacious (39% Mourvedre, 35% Syrah and 26% Grenache) is a Chateauneuf du Pape look-alike with its darker fruits, cured meats, herbes de Provence and licorice-laced bouquet. A big, full-bodied, concentrated, sexy and fruit loaded effort, drink it anytime over the coming 7-8 years."

changing things on the fly and creating a wine that is truly its own. Perfectionist uses the coolest climate syrah blocks from the estate, he ferments them whole cluster, getting a phenolic structure that stands out from other wines. Cofermenting with the grenache and mourvédre allows for a rare, individualistic wine. This is the opposite of diligent blending. Aged in concrete. Drink through 2023

ANTONIO GALLONI'S VINOUS MEDIA 94 POINTS - "Not a year goes by when Matt Trevisan doesn't tell me that he's still fine-tuning his style and thinking as much as possible about ways to reach his potential as a winemaker--and, increasingly, as a grower. A quick look at the names of his wines gives one an idea of his curious nature and he's one of the more reflective producers that I visit, anywhere. He reminds me a lot, in fact, of Jean-Louis Chave, another young vigneron who, like Trevisan, is constantly questioning his own work even though his wines are consistently among the very best examples of his appellation."

"Opaque ruby. Complex, assertively perfumed bouquet of ripe black and blue fruit liqueur and floral pastilles, with mineral and cola nuances coming up slowly. Sweet, concentrated and expansive on the palate, offering intense blueberry and boysenberry flavors sharpened by juicy acidity. Distinctly suave and seamless wine with wonderful closing focus and persistence and gentle framing tannins."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "Focusing exclusively on blends, Linne Calodo’s Matt Trevisan makes some of the sexist, most silky and seamless wines out there. He’s excelled in both 2012 and 2013."

"Another medium to full-bodied, lightly textured, elegant effort is the 2013 Perfectionist. Made from 68% Syrah, 17% Mourvedre and 15% Grenache, it shows plenty of Mourvedre savoriness to go with ample red and black fruits, smoked meats and a touch of olive tapenade. Like all of Matt's 2013s, it's seamless and perfectly balanced, with lots to love. Drink it anytime over the coming 8-10 years."

"A deep, implosive wine, the 2012 Syrah Garys' Vineyard hits the palate with serious depth and power. Here, it is the density of the fruit that stands out most. The Garys' was fermented in oak uprights, with about 70% whole clusters, an approach that is paying off nicely. Today, the 2012 is a bit muscular and tightly wound, so I suggest giving the wine another 6-12 months in bottle."

"Lavender, violets, plums, black cherries all jump from the glass in the 2012 Syrah Soberanes Vineyard. A stunning, pulsating wine, the 2012 impresses for its nuance and overall harmony. Sage, mint, orange peel and rosemary are some of the notes that flesh out on the super-impressive finish. The purity of the fruit here is simply striking. The Soberanes was done with 100% whole clusters, which works beautifully here."

"The 2012 Syrah Susan's Hill emerges from a parcel within the Pisoni vineyard. Tar, smoke, game, incense and black stone fruits hit the palate with massive intensity and pure power. A broad, ample style of Syrah, the Susan's Hill is all about depth and resonance. The 45% whole clusters are very nicely integrated."

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - "I always look forward to tasting McPrice Myers's wines, as they are so full of character and personality. That is certainly the case with these 2011s and 2010s. As always, the wines are bold, rich and juicy. Readers will also want to take a look at the wines Myers makes under his Barrel 27 label, which are reviewed separately here. Those wines also deliver plenty of personality, but at lower price points."

"The 2011 L'Ange Rouge is gorgeous in this vintage, even if it needs time for some of the slightly rough edges to melt away further in bottle. Dark red cherries, pomegranate, spices and tobacco all emerge over time. The 2011 is another striking, hugely appealing wines from McPrice Myers. The medium-bodied style is best suited for drinking over the next handful of years. Drinking window: 2014 - 2018."

ROBERT PARKER'S THE WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "These 2010s and 2011s from McPrice are straight up fantastic. Very classy and pure, they all benefitted from substantial air time and deserve another year or two in the cellar. In addition to delivering rock-star quality, they also represent superb values. This is another Paso Robles producer who has consistently produced outstanding wines that remain more than reasonably priced given their quality. They merit serious attention!"

"Moving to the 2011 reds, and one of the more southern Rhone styled Grenache blends coming out of California, the 2011 Grenache l’Ange Rouge offers up beautiful kirsch liqueur, garrigue, spice and basil-like nuances as well as a medium to full-bodied, nicely focused and structured palate. There’s some tannin to resolve, yet it’s sweet and well integrated. Enjoy this beauty over the coming 4-6 years. Drink now-2019."

charts good! While both of the Chardonnays are beautiful, and play in the clean, crisp and medium-bodied spectrum, it’s the 2012 Pinot Noirs and Syrahs that are incredible across the board. The Syrahs see slightly less whole cluster inclusion, but are also aged all in neutral French oak. "One of the finest Syrahs to come out of California, the 2012 Syrah Donna’s is inky black to the rim and offers up heavenly notes of smoked bacon, liquid rock, iron and assorted currant and blackberry fruit. Fabulously concentrated, with full-bodied richness, no hard edges and building tannin, this incredible Syrah comes off from sandy soils, was 60% destemmed and aged 18 months in neutral oak. Hats off to Greg Brewer and the Melville team for this awesome wine!"

Picked over a three day period in mid November, the fruit for this wine comes exclusively from Melville's Santa Rita Hills estate and is a combination of two different Syrah clones (Read More...
Estrella and Clone 99). The Estrella is from Donna’s block which is planted on well drained, nutrient deficient sand. The neutrality of this soil always lends an intoxicating and high toned bouquet of flowers and spice while the Clone 99 from Block I is planted on denser sandy loam soil, bringing depth and richness to the resultant wine. 15% whole cluster fermented in small 1.5 ton bins, total skin and stem contact averaged 30 days (7 day cold soak, 2+ weeks fermentation, and 1+ week extended maceration). From the press the wine was transferred directly to neutral barrels (5-20 year old French oak) where it remained sur lie with no sulfur until May when it was gently pressure racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in August.

Inky garnet in color, fresh and vivid aromatics of boysenberry cream, plum cobbler, allspice and mincemeat emanate from the glass. In the background, herbal notes of Mexican oregano, fennel seed, clove and chili powder intermingle with deeper components of liquid smoke, menthol and roasted blue corn. The palate impression is tender and polished with a firm presence finishing with significant weight and focus.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "Another wine that represents one of the top values around, the 2013 Syrah Estate offers incredible notes of liquid smoke, ground pepper, olive tapenade and tons of black fruits. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured and concentrated, it sill has remarkable purity and precision. Coming from the Sta. Rita Hills and aged 10 months in neutral oak, it's a gorgeous wine that readers shouldn't miss."

the Sta. Rita Hills, near Los Alamos. It was 70% destemmed and aged 10 months in neutral oak. It reveals terrific notes of cassis, peppered meats, blackberries, licorice and wood smoke to go with a full-bodied, ripe, yet beautifully balanced and layered feel on the palate. Given all the Syrahs and Pinot Noirs from Santa Barbara going for three times the price, the quality here is remarkable. In short, it's a no-brainer that will drink nicely for at least another 4-6 years. Unfortunately, this will be the last vintage from this vineyard for Melville.

Greg Brewer is the genius behind these brilliant wines from the Sta. Rita Hills in California’s Santa Barbara County. I am continually blown away by what they are able to put in bottle, and if you factor in price, these are no-brainer purchases."

Winemaker Greg Brewer and grower Chad Melville continue to knock it out of the park with these Melville releases. Focusing on site, if not plot, specific releases, neutral oak, no SO2 until racking and varying degrees of whole cluster are the norm here. The wines have individual characters and, stylistically, lean toward the more complex, finesse-driven side of the spectrum. They “wow” more for their balance and nuance than their power and richness. They also remain reasonably priced!”

Melville has become a nucleus for Rhone varietals from Santa Rita Hills. Nestled in the heart of Santa Barbara County, Melville has always focused on their vineyards, knowing that the vineyard is where great wine begins! After studying at U.C. Davis, brothers Brent & Chad, who manage the family’s estate vineyards, focused on giving winemaker Greg Brewer (also of Brewer-Clifton fame) the best fruit they could possibly produce. In turn, Greg has crafted wines that receive high scores and rave reviews year-in and year-out…and this year is no different! As always, their Verna’s Vineyard Syrah is a prodigious effort; Medium-bodied & richly nuanced, from black pepper to bacon fat!

windier then Melville's Sta. Rita Hills property during the growing season, this estate has proven wellsuited for growing this aromatic Rhone varietal. The fruit was gently whole cluster pressed, transferred to neutral barrels (5-20 year French oak), cold-fermented at 45°F for three months and prepared for bottling in late March. Cold fermentation, neutral vessels and the avoidance of malo-lactic fermentation were employed to retain the wine’s freshness and exotic expressions. Yields were 3.2 lbs/vine (3.0 tons/acre).

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "The 2013 Viognier Estate Verna’s is another outstanding effort from Greg that also represents a smoking value. Giving up classic apricot, pineapple and loads of floral qualities (almost a flower oil-like quality) to go with a medium-bodied, unctuously textured, yet still surprisingly fresh and focused style on the palate. Aged 6 months in neutral oak, it’s an impressive Viognier to enjoy over the coming year or two."
