Pinot Noir and Syrah and sits on the Santa Lucia Highlands Bench adjacent to the Garys' Vineyard. The clonal material planted in the loamy, rocky soil is very diverse and features over a dozen of the most renowned heritage selections from California and Burgundy in pursuit of the finest wine quality.

ANTONIO GALLONI 94 POINTS - "This is a gorgeous set of wines from Lucia, the Pisoni family's label for all of their wines that emerge from vineyards other than Pisoni itself. The Syrahs are the clear highlights among these 2012s. Over the last few years Jeff and Mark Pisoni have been experimenting with whole clusters, an approach that seems to bring layers of dimension and complexity to the wines. In 2012, all three Syrahs are exceptional.

"Lavender, violets, plums, black cherries all jump from the glass in the 2012 Syrah Soberanes Vineyard. A stunning, pulsating wine, the 2012 impresses for its nuance and overall harmony. Sage, mint, orange peel and rosemary are some of the notes that flesh out on the super-impressive finish. The purity of the fruit here is simply striking. The Soberanes was done with 100% whole clusters, which works beautifully here."

"The 2012 Syrah Susan's Hill emerges from a parcel within the Pisoni vineyard. Tar, smoke, game, incense and black stone fruits hit the palate with massive intensity and pure power. A broad, ample style of Syrah, the Susan's Hill is all about depth and resonance. The 45% whole clusters are very nicely integrated."

It's a full-bodied, rich and textured effort that has solid mid-palate depth and ripe tannin on the finish. the nose, with majestic flavors of strawberries, currants, black cherries, sandalwood, and touch of rawhide in the mouth. Ripe, rich, and full-bodied, yet still shows acid on the finish. The modest tannin, good structure, and lively make this a great food wine!

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - "I always look forward to tasting McPrice Myers's wines, as they are so full of character and personality. That is certainly the case with these 2011s and 2010s. As always, the wines are bold, rich and juicy. Readers will also want to take a look at the wines Myers makes under his Barrel 27 label, which are reviewed separately here. Those wines also deliver plenty of personality, but at lower price points."

"The 2011 L'Ange Rouge is gorgeous in this vintage, even if it needs time for some of the slightly rough edges to melt away further in bottle. Dark red cherries, pomegranate, spices and tobacco all emerge over time. The 2011 is another striking, hugely appealing wines from McPrice Myers. The medium-bodied style is best suited for drinking over the next handful of years. Drinking window: 2014 - 2018."

ROBERT PARKER'S THE WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "These 2010s and 2011s from McPrice are straight up fantastic. Very classy and pure, they all benefitted from substantial air time and deserve another year or two in the cellar. In addition to delivering rock-star quality, they also represent superb values. This is another Paso Robles producer who has consistently produced outstanding wines that remain more than reasonably priced given their quality. They merit serious attention!"

"Moving to the 2011 reds, and one of the more southern Rhone styled Grenache blends coming out of California, the 2011 Grenache l’Ange Rouge offers up beautiful kirsch liqueur, garrigue, spice and basil-like nuances as well as a medium to full-bodied, nicely focused and structured palate. There’s some tannin to resolve, yet it’s sweet and well integrated. Enjoy this beauty over the coming 4-6 years. Drink now-2019."

The 2011 McPrice Myers Terre Blanche is an outstanding blend of 80% Roussanne and 20% Viognier. It shows superb aromas of ripe pear, mineral, hazelnut and citrus rind to go with a medium-bodied, silky, yet energetic palate. While there’s lots of fruit here, the overall impression is of purity and class. Enjoy it over the coming 2-3 years. Drink now-2016."

Both of his late release 2011s showed beautifully, and the 2012s are a step up. The 2012s buck the vintage stereotype and have enough tannin and concentration to warrant short-term cellaring. In addition, these efforts always have a savory, structured style that should appeal to both Old and New World wine lovers.

"Another great 2012, the 2012 Beautiful Earth (78% Syrah, 14% Grenache and 8% Mourvedre) has an inky purple color that-s followed by ample blackberry, blueberry, pepper, earth, mineral and hints of violets. This full-bodied, layered and seamless effort has awesome intensity and richness, notable purity of fruit and a big finish that stays focused and clean. Aged 16 months in 50% new French, give it a year and drink through 2024."

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - "The Syrah-based wines are the highlights among this year's new releases from McPrice Myers. At their best, the wines are racy, beautifully layered and full of nuance. Only the Ange Rouge is less expressive than normal, but it has also just been bottled.

"The 2012 Beautiful Earth is a gorgeous. Layered and beautifully balanced in the glass, the 2012 graces the palate with dark red cherry, plum, smoke and leather. All the elements are very nicely melded together. The 2012 finishes with substantial depth and polish. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine from McPrice Myers. The blend is 78% Syrah, 14% Grenache and 14% Mourvèdre. Drinking window: 2014 - 2022."

Picked over a three day period in mid November, the fruit for this wine comes exclusively from Melville's Santa Rita Hills estate and is a combination of two different Syrah clones (Read More...
Estrella and Clone 99). The Estrella is from Donna’s block which is planted on well drained, nutrient deficient sand. The neutrality of this soil always lends an intoxicating and high toned bouquet of flowers and spice while the Clone 99 from Block I is planted on denser sandy loam soil, bringing depth and richness to the resultant wine. 15% whole cluster fermented in small 1.5 ton bins, total skin and stem contact averaged 30 days (7 day cold soak, 2+ weeks fermentation, and 1+ week extended maceration). From the press the wine was transferred directly to neutral barrels (5-20 year old French oak) where it remained sur lie with no sulfur until May when it was gently pressure racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in August.

Inky garnet in color, fresh and vivid aromatics of boysenberry cream, plum cobbler, allspice and mincemeat emanate from the glass. In the background, herbal notes of Mexican oregano, fennel seed, clove and chili powder intermingle with deeper components of liquid smoke, menthol and roasted blue corn. The palate impression is tender and polished with a firm presence finishing with significant weight and focus.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "Another wine that represents one of the top values around, the 2013 Syrah Estate offers incredible notes of liquid smoke, ground pepper, olive tapenade and tons of black fruits. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured and concentrated, it sill has remarkable purity and precision. Coming from the Sta. Rita Hills and aged 10 months in neutral oak, it's a gorgeous wine that readers shouldn't miss."

windier then Melville's Sta. Rita Hills property during the growing season, this estate has proven wellsuited for growing this aromatic Rhone varietal. The fruit was gently whole cluster pressed, transferred to neutral barrels (5-20 year French oak), cold-fermented at 45°F for three months and prepared for bottling in late March. Cold fermentation, neutral vessels and the avoidance of malo-lactic fermentation were employed to retain the wine’s freshness and exotic expressions. Yields were 3.2 lbs/vine (3.0 tons/acre).

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "The 2013 Viognier Estate Verna’s is another outstanding effort from Greg that also represents a smoking value. Giving up classic apricot, pineapple and loads of floral qualities (almost a flower oil-like quality) to go with a medium-bodied, unctuously textured, yet still surprisingly fresh and focused style on the palate. Aged 6 months in neutral oak, it’s an impressive Viognier to enjoy over the coming year or two."

A true “Garagiste”, Nicolas epitomizes the French term that signifies a passionate small-lot vintner who doesn’t care much for following the rules. Notes from Winemaker Nicolas Elliot: "This wine is a blend of 48% Grenache, 44% Syrah and 8% Mourvedre, with the fruit coming from La Vista, Law, and Russell Family vineyards. The GSM (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre) blend gives me the most flexibility to create something that is unique and reflective of the vintage. It is always my favorite wine to craft. For 2012, the Grenache was aged in concrete, the Syrah in French oak barrels, and the Mourvedre was fermented 50% whole cluster and then aged in a once-used puncheon barrel. The mixture of different vineyards and winemaking techniques always keeps this wine interesting. With a bright and rich mouth-feel, the GSM 2012 is seamless and has great texture. Profiles of rose petal, dusty cocoa and plum make this wine intriguing yet focused, with a very lengthy finish of caramel. This wine is showing very well right now after a three hour decant, and will continue to age gracefully for the next 7-10 years."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "The 2012 GSM is beautiful. Made from 48% Grenache, 44% Syrah and the balance Mourvedre, it has terrific notes of kirsch and blackberry fruits, herbes de Provence, spice and hints of minerality in its layered, ripe, sexy and full-bodied profile. I like it now but it should evolve nicely through 2022."

The 2012 Sans Maison is a red wine consisting of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. This is a blend of the various vineyards Nicolas Elliot sources from, and is made in a style that is approachable early on; more of an everyday drinker. There is a fresh red fruit profile coming from the Grenache that was aged in concrete but has enough structure to from the Syrah to help carry the lengthy finish. The Mourvedre adds a bit of tilled earth notes to the nose and rounds out the wine nicely.

Notes from Winemaker Nicolas Elliot: "Buxom 2012 is a blend of 94% Syrah and 6% Grenache, with the fruit coming from La Vista and Law vineyards. For 2012, Buxom once again looks to be one of the best wines of the vintage for Nicora. This wine never fails to keep me intrigued and on my toes. By selecting from some of the best barrels of Syrah, I am able to fine-tune it every year. On the nose I get licorice, charred meat, clove and vanilla. On the palate, there is dark chocolate, coffee and blackberry, with a slight note of smoke and tar on the finish. I recommend decanting if for four hours, and it often shows best the second day. This wine will easily age for 7-10 years."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "The largest cuvee from Nicora, there's a scant 198 cases of the 2012 Buxom. Made from 94% Syrah and 6% Grenache, it has tons of spice and white pepper to go with black raspberry, dried herb and leather nuances. Full-bodied, rich, decadent and sexy, with a big, heady finish, it shows a touch of its alcohol, yet is still a fun drink."

Notes from Winemaker Nicolas Elliot: "The Undisclosed was made with a lot of the same thought process that goes into the red wines I produce. The Viognier was picked very ripe and has all of the wonderful aromatic and viscous qualities that I look for in a Paso Robles Viognier. The Roussanne was picked with a bit more restraint and provides the backbone of the acidity while adding unique stone fruit flavors. This wine is very rich in taste yet still vibrant enough to enjoy on a summer day. On the nose and palate, there are amazing tropical-fruit qualities that remind me of mango, dried pineapple, and wet stone. These are coupled with pear, honey and apricot that is most likely from the Roussanne component. Even early in its youth, this wine is showing very well and will continue to age for many years to come. My best guess is that this wine will easily hold up for 5 years or more. This wine has gone through full malolactic fermentation adding to it's richness. This is very limited in production."
