Pinot Noir and Syrah and sits on the Santa Lucia Highlands Bench adjacent to the Garys' Vineyard. The clonal material planted in the loamy, rocky soil is very diverse and features over a dozen of the most renowned heritage selections from California and Burgundy in pursuit of the finest wine quality.

ANTONIO GALLONI 94 POINTS - "This is a gorgeous set of wines from Lucia, the Pisoni family's label for all of their wines that emerge from vineyards other than Pisoni itself. The Syrahs are the clear highlights among these 2012s. Over the last few years Jeff and Mark Pisoni have been experimenting with whole clusters, an approach that seems to bring layers of dimension and complexity to the wines. In 2012, all three Syrahs are exceptional.

"Lavender, violets, plums, black cherries all jump from the glass in the 2012 Syrah Soberanes Vineyard. A stunning, pulsating wine, the 2012 impresses for its nuance and overall harmony. Sage, mint, orange peel and rosemary are some of the notes that flesh out on the super-impressive finish. The purity of the fruit here is simply striking. The Soberanes was done with 100% whole clusters, which works beautifully here."

the nose, with majestic flavors of strawberries, currants, black cherries, sandalwood, and touch of rawhide in the mouth. Ripe, rich, and full-bodied, yet still shows acid on the finish. The modest tannin, good structure, and lively make this a great food wine!

ROBERT PARKER'S THE WINE ADVOCATE 91+ POINTS - "These 2010s and 2011s from McPrice are straight up fantastic. Very classy and pure, they all benefitted from substantial air time and deserve another year or two in the cellar. In addition to delivering rock-star quality, they also represent superb values. This is another Paso Robles producer who has consistently produced outstanding wines that remain more than reasonably priced given their quality. They merit serious attention!

"While I reviewed these 2010s last year for the Rhone Report, I was able to retaste the wines for this report and have updated the notes and scores where needed. A blend of all Grenache and McPrice’s take on a Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the 2010 Grenache L’Ange Rouge is semi-opaque in color and offers up a perfumed, complex array of garrigue, sweet cherries, pepper and licorice that flows to a full-bodied, textured and lively palate. Quite fresh, with a solid core of acidity, as well as ripe tannin, it should be given another year or two in bottle and then consumed over the following 4-6 years. Drink now-2019."

the balance Grenache and Mourvedre. Gorgeously pure, fresh and focused, with knockout purity, it dishes out layers of blackberry, chocolate, smoke and floral undertones to go with a full-bodied and impeccably balance profile on the palate. Year-in and year-out, this is our favorite wine that Mac makes, and it appears to be the favorite of our customers, too… how convenient! Mac gets Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre from three exceptional vineyards in the famed “Westside” of Paso Robles; Terra Bella, Shadow Canyon and Luna Matta. He fermented them in small open-top bins so he could control every aspect of the process, to ensure that he could make the best wine possible! Mac shows the strength of Paso Robles in this vintage, and the wine has just reveiced 94 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate!

The 2011 McPrice Myers Terre Blanche is an outstanding blend of 80% Roussanne and 20% Viognier. assorted meatiness on the nose. Filling in beautifully on the palate, with a medium-bodied profile, this knockout, voluptuously textured effort has no hard edges, serious purity of fruit and ripe tannin that emerges through the finish. Taking the better part of a day to shine, this beauty should be given another 2-3 years of bottle age and consumed over the following 7-8 years. Drink 2015-2022.

Winemaker Greg Brewer and grower Chad Melville continue to knock it out of the park with these Melville releases. Focusing on site, if not plot, specific releases, neutral oak, no SO2 until racking and varying degrees of whole cluster are the norm here. The wines have individual characters and, stylistically, lean toward the more complex, finesse-driven side of the spectrum. They “wow” more for their balance and nuance than their power and richness. They also remain reasonably priced!”

Melville has become a nucleus for Rhone varietals from Santa Rita Hills. Nestled in the heart of Santa Barbara County, Melville has always focused on their vineyards, knowing that the vineyard is where great wine begins! After studying at U.C. Davis, brothers Brent & Chad, who manage the family’s estate vineyards, focused on giving winemaker Greg Brewer (also of Brewer-Clifton fame) the best fruit they could possibly produce. In turn, Greg has crafted wines that receive high scores and rave reviews year-in and year-out…and this year is no different! As always, their Verna’s Vineyard Syrah is a prodigious effort; Medium-bodied & richly nuanced, from black pepper to bacon fat!

Estrella and Clone 99). The Estrella is from Donna’s block which is planted on well drained, nutrient deficient sand. The neutrality of this soil always lends an intoxicating and high toned bouquet of flowers and spice while the Clone 99 from Block I is planted on denser sandy loam soil, bringing depth and richness to the resultant wine. 15% whole cluster fermented in small 1.5 ton bins, total skin and stem contact averaged 30 days (7 day cold soak, 2+ weeks fermentation, and 1+ week extended maceration). From the press the wine was transferred directly to neutral barrels (5-20 year old French oak) where it remained sur lie with no sulfur until May when it was gently pressure racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in August.

Inky garnet in color, fresh and vivid aromatics of boysenberry cream, plum cobbler, allspice and mincemeat emanate from the glass. In the background, herbal notes of Mexican oregano, fennel seed, clove and chili powder intermingle with deeper components of liquid smoke, menthol and roasted blue corn. The palate impression is tender and polished with a firm presence finishing with significant weight and focus. Only 839 cases were produced!

over the wine was adjusted in duration and frequency, depending on taste and yeast activity (one to three times per day). The ferments were pressed off between one and four brix and then returned to tank. Once dry, the wine was racked off lees and inoculated for malolactc fermentation. MLF was done in tank and barrel, and upon completion, racked into barrel for 20 months. Complex plum and boysenberry aromas combine with rich cassis notes and hints of pine and earth. The cold Yorkville nights preserved the wine's acidity and helped maintain the balance of elegance and alcohol that makes this wine so food-friendly. Twenty months' aging in French and American oak has smooted the palate and added a layer of vanilla to the long, concentrated finish.

to warm, sunny days and cool nights, and soils rich in sand and calcareous material. This results in a classic, cool-climate Syrah that is refreshing, rather than heavy or cloying. Murray added 5% Viognier to this vintage in hommage of his old Roasted Slope Syrah. The aromas and flavors lean toward bright red fruits...cherries, raspberries, currants, and cranberries, with just a touch of a floral/violet note (from the Viognier) with a spicy note dominated by fresh black pepper and a dose of sweet French oak.
