STAETE LANDT 2012 SAUVIGNON BLANC

We did a New Zealand tasting event at our bar a few months ago and the takeaway for many on our staff was the Staete Landt “Anabel” Sauvignon Blanc. Staete Landt is smaller than most producers in Marlborough with all wines (even the “second label,” Map Maker) coming from the winery’s 52-acre estate. The land is a rare pocket of alluvial “greywacke” soils in a sub-zone known as “the Golden Mile,” home to many of the best NZ Sauvignons from estates like Seresin, St. Clair, and the home-block of Cloudy Bay. Staete Landt shows the brisk citrus and mineral thread you might expect from a top NZ Sauvignon, but the estate’s “Anabel” bottling combines feather-soft creamy textures and pleasing notes of nectarine and Crenshaw melon that flesh out the palate. Staete Landt’s small scale doesn’t support the usual “national importer” and is only sold in California and New York. We think you’ll enjoy this rare find!
