is deep crimson-colored with an ethereal perfume aided by its extended upbringing. Aromas of Asian spices, lavender, incense, truffle, and confiture of black fruits are compelling. Sweet, forward, rich, and hedonistic, it nevertheless has the balance and structure to continue evolving for another 5-10 years. In strong vintages Vega Sicilia drinks well at age 50 and I would expect the same of the 2000."

Velvety-textured, sweetly-fruited, layered, relatively forward, and lengthy, this seamless effort admirably reveals the strengths of the great 2009 vintage and is a superb value to boot. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

Borsao's wines have been a corner stone of our Spanish section for years and years. Familiarity sometimes means we don't taste these wines as often as we should. It's true! Just grab Read More...
a glass of Borsao's $5.98 Vina Borgia Garnacha, it is probably the best wine for the money on the planet. The color is a rich dark purple. Warm spices enveloped in blackberry and blueberry. The richness and spice carries through on the palate as the darker fruit tones showing on the nose are brightened by notes of red cherry and pomegranate. The folks at Borsao own nearly 3 thousand acres in Campo de Borja, roughly three quarters of the appellation. This rocky zone in the foothills of the Pyrenees is one of the original homes of the Garnache grape. There is an old church on the property that has records of Garnache plantings that go back to the 900's...

planted on such rocky and austere soils don’t produce much. Low yields are essential for concentrated, flavorful wines, but La Mancha’s recent history has mostly been about inexpensive, easy drinking wines. With these great raw materials in the vineyard, Importer Jorge Ordonez knew that La Mancha could do much better. Rather than finding an existing winery to import, Jorge found the right vineyards in the Northwest of La Mancha and hired his own winemaker.
WINERY NOTES- "This single vineyard-designated wine has plenty of red cherries, blueberries, mulberries and red raisins, depicting grapes pushed to full ripeness without going beyond the boundary into excessive over ripeness. The oak character is relatively elegant with toasty, coffee hints only, and the balanced wine shows some lingering length as well. Drink now or in the next five or so years."

and un-fussy introduction to Spanish wines, this would be a great place to start. The wine has a violet-purple color and equally impressive saturation of black plum, raspberry and fine spices on the palate. In fact the richness and texture are off the charts for $6.99. It also doesn't hurt that the new label is pretty mod and cool looking-much better than the funny yellow guy of past years.
