that elongate the growing season. This gives us small, concentrated and flavorful berries, producing bright cherry characteristics, brown spices, and a keen minerality overlaid with a rich, velvety mouth feel. Once an old dairy farm, the pastureland was planted to Dijon clone Pinot Noir in 2000, preserving the deep agricultural history of the property.

The aromas are abundant with bright cherry, cranberry and brown spice, reminiscent of warm cinnamon toast topped with plum jam. On the palate, the bright cherry opens the show, then evolves into a lush, sweetly spiced plum pudding, coating the mouth with a velvety richness. The wine then develops an intense mineral note, adding yet another dimension, lending way to silky tannins and a lengthy finish.

The characteristically cool climate, which is affected by fog generated by the valley's proximity to the Pacific Ocean, makes it a perfect site to grow these fickle grapes.

August Briggs' Russian River Pinot Noir can be described as their ‘classic’ style pinot noir. In this 2011 vintage, the wine shows off its true Burgundy character. The wine is characterized by vibrant garnet color, upfront exotic aromas of pomegranate, sour cherry, cranberry, and cardamom combine with a delicate note of mint and white pepper. It has a nice core of fruit flavors with a bit of orange peel at the end. Amazingly complex and gets better and better the longer it stays in your glass.

The 2013 vintage produced 370 cases. The wine was kept for 15 months in oak, 25% new, all French. This has given the wine a much softer feel at release. As always the wine is 100% from the Rochioli vineyards. The Flad Vinyard was planted to the West Block Clone back in the late 1980s and also from the River Block, a West Block clone planted at the same time. These blocks give Castalia its special character. The rest of the wine is from Dijon clones 777,115 and 667 from three different vinyards. This wine should age for at least ten years and be in it’s prime in from 4 to 7 years. Castalia Pinot Noir possesses the full-bodied complexity and subtle cherry essence that are so typical of the finest Russian River Pinot Noirs.

a small amount of old vine vineyards in the blend. The wine is made in a style that highlights the distinctive characteristics and unique flavor profiles famous to Russian River Valley – an AVA that DeLoach Vineyards helped officially established in 1983.

Tasting notes from winemaker Brian Maloney: "The wine opens aromatically with enticing notes full of boysenberry and blackberry accentuated with hints of dust and violet. Dark red, almost purplish, this wine is medium to full-bodied with excellent balance and great structure. True to its varietal, our Russian River Valley Zinfandel has nice acidity, just a touch of toast on the palate and is ready to be enjoyed upon release."

With time in the glass a lovely beeswax/honeyed quality comes forth quich nicely offsets the wine's inherent dry, precise structure. Youthful aromas of sea shells, honeydew melon, grapefruit, lilies, and white peach develop in the glass. On the palate, lime sherbet, slate, and mineral are constantly appearing. there was no malolactic fermentation. Intensely perfuned yet quite brisk on opening, this shows textbook white peach, honeysuckle, lemongrass and nectarine.

ROBERT PARKER 92 POINTS - "As I have written in the past, this is a beautiful partnership between owner Kerry Murphy and the brilliant winemaker Andy Smith. Approaching its 20th anniversary, the breadth of high-quality, complex Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs as well as a Viognier and Syrahs they have consistently produced is stunning."

"The 2012 Viognier Lia (a 230-case cuvée of 100% Viogner) was aged in larger French hogsheads with no malolactic and only 20% new oak. The vines were 14 years of age in 2012. It reveals that steely, wet pebbly, gravelly character that adds a complex nuance to the honeysuckle, peach and apricot fruit. This floral, medium-bodied, steely beauty can be enjoyed over the next 3-4 years."

the fundamental bright berry core and silky Green Valley tannins are always part and parcel of this wine, there is a particularly vivid aromatic freshness this year, which carries through in its bright acid and low alcohol in the mouth. Red berries combined with black cherry fruit in the nose is underlain with candied rhubarb and a hint of sandalwood and cinnamon. In the mouth, the cherry flavors are carried through on the wonderfully fine tannins--like warm cherry vanilla ice cream in a glass. The finish is exceptionally lengthy, and serves up the accompanying sweet berry cream pie. With our stellar salmon season this year, we like to use a bit in our marinade to make the pairing even more ideal. But don't limit yourself. A beauty of this wine is the boundless possibilities, from herb crusted poultry to grilled fish to slices of goat Gouda. Production: 2,486 cases."

River Valley, creating the perfect climate to nurture fruit to ideal ripeness. A discrete group of select clones and growing areas combine to produce the Les Brumeux blend. The Wente clone benefits from the warmth of the northernmost vineyard along Westside Road and contributes an oily texture and tropical notes. The Rued clone, grown in the cool climate of Green Valley, brings beautiful perfume and floral notes to the wine. The Heritage clone provides notes of pear and citrus from a vineyard cultivated in the Goldridge sandy loam along Vine Hill Road in Sebastopol.

Crisp and flinty, this wine opens with abundant layers of peach, orange blossom, citrus and subtle notes of pineapple. These fruit-dominated aromas slowly give way to floral and mineral notes with citrus zest. Upon entry, beautiful creaminess and stone fruits evolve into warm, toasty oak with an oily texture that coats the entire palate. The wonderfully bright and lively acidity keeps the mouthfeel balanced and leads to a mouthwatering and refreshing finish.

and some of them are world-reknowned. The Russian River Valley Chardonnay bottling is made of both; Stiling Vineyard and Green Acres Vineyard.

Lush and juicy, Eric Kent's Russian River bottling is always their most immediately accessible and hedonistic Chardonnay and the 2012 vintage lives up to its reputation and then some! A counterpoint to the more “serious” Green Acres Hill, the 2012 Russian River sports a fuller body with generous mouth feel and inviting richness already. There’s loads of toasty apple, poached pear and crème brulee aromas and flavors, with hints of lychee as well as the hallmark delicate white flower character from the Stiling vineyard fruit that forms the base of this delicious cuvée. Easy to love right now, once again we're certain an extra year or two in bottle will more than reward the wait!

caught our attention early and we felt it was time to let this one shine almost on its own since it fits so perfectly between the boisterous Kalen’s Big Boy blend and the darkly serious Las Madres vineyard designate. That is a long way of saying we love it and want to share a few cases with you… hence our 2012 Barrel Climber Syrah!

"Gorgeously aromatic with suggestions of framboise, black fruit, pepper and blue flowers, the nearly impenetrable electric purple color may lead you to believe it is a monster, but not so! Alcohol levels are firmly in check and the balance and structure suggest this wine has a long life ahead. If you choose to pop one open sooner rather than later, decant for an hour or two, or drink over several days for maximum enjoyment. We can't seem to help ourselves and are reaching for the bottles already!"
