Elegant on the palate, structured, and nicely concentrated, the flavors offer considerable complexity, no doubt from the old vines, with the promise of more to come for those who give it another 6-8 years of cellaring. This fine effort will be at its best from now to 2020. Only 300 six packs produced.

but its opulent red berry, cherry and dark chocolate flavors are enlivened by strong minerality. As deeply concentrated and palate-staining as this wine is, it shows unlikely elegance. In fact, this reminds me a little of a modern Bordeaux The finish is sweet, smoky and very long."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - " The 2007 Vino del Olivo (named after an 800-year-old olive tree) is a blend of 88% Tempranillo and 12% Graciano. It has a hedonistic, flamboyant bouquet of macerated red cherries and crushed strawberry, with hints of marmalade and fresh fig underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with a very polished, oaky entry. There are plush red fruits with cassis and blueberry cut through with crisp acidity leading to a tensile, velvety-smooth finish. It is a decadent, but composed Rioja."

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - " Black cherry, plum, tobacco and loam flavors mingle in this broad red. This has slightly chewy tannins, but remains fresh."

its other characteristics makes this an ideal sipper as well as a perfect accompaniment to a wide variety of dishes.

All grapes come from the 'Rioja Alta' subzone, where higher altitudes and Atlantic influences make for a moderate climate which is ideal for producing wines of elegance and finesse. Soils are composed of iron-rich clay and limestone. This wine is aged in tank and bottled in January to preserve freshness and fruit.

La Rioja is blessed with the perfect conditions for excellent vineyards. Its soil and climate are favorable for growing vitis vinifera, and its wine culture runs deep and wide. There are good reasons why this land enjoys international recognition for its outstanding wines. Cune, with its three wineries and the many international prizes earned by its wines, has also contributed to making Rioja the global benchmark it is today.

Cune`s Viña Real winery is located on top of the Cerro de la Mesa, in Rioja Alavesa, an area celebrated for its fruit-forward wines, a land with a soil that supports the best native red wine grape varieties and that enjoys an optimum mesoclimate. Most vines here grow from the highlands of the Sierra de Cantabria down to the Ebro River on southern-facing slopes the calcareous sediment of the hills makes the soil ideal. Rioja Alavesa was one of Spain`s pioneering regions in the barrel-aging of wines, and Viña Real was one of the first to make crianza wines in this area.

Cune has been a long time staff and customer favorite from Rioja. Over the years we have had the privilege of tasting their Gran Reservas as far back as the 50’s. Our reactions are always the same, we ooh and awe, treasuring every sip.

the Vina Real winery. As with the Reserva, the Crianza is usually a blend of 90% Tempranillo complemented with small amounts of Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. 2010 had textbook climatic conditions to be a great vintage. The destemmed grapes carry out both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats and the wine ages for some 14 months in French and American oak barrels. This 2010 has a nice bright cherry color with a clean and open nose displaying red fruits and a spicy touch, coming through as quite a traditional nose and a polished palate with good acidity as they aim for freshness and drinkability. This Crianza represents superb value for money. Drink now-2020."

The palate is medium-bodied and very balanced with great acidity and fine tannins that make it easy to drink. Pop or keep. It has good freshness, and with time in the glass it develops beautiful aromas of orange peel that transmit very good freshness."

tannins and citrusy acidity keep this lively. Though the flavors are maturing, the wine remains fresh. Drink now through 2020."

The Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva is an amazingly complex wine produced only in years when the quality of the grapes is very high and supports the lengthy aging process required by the Gran Reserva designation. Wine critics have hailed the 2005 vintage as one of the great vintages of the last decade in Rioja. The El Coto winery has enjoyed great success in Europe and is just now being brought into the United States in very limited quantities. In fact, only 120 cases of this wine were imported into this country!

This 100% Tempranillo-based wine is exceptionally balanced with the smooth drinkability gained from 24 months of aging in American oak and 36 months in bottle prior to release. This is a delicious, savory wine, which benefits from at least 2 hours of decanting to really show its complexity and is exactly what a quality Gran Reserva Rioja should taste like. It is a wine of character and elegance, which is well balanced and harmonious.

Medium ruby fading to a garnet edge. The nose is very complex, showing dried red fruit, cigar box, forest floor, earth and herbs. The palate is refined and the tannins are resolved and silky. Nice acidity brightens the character of the fruit. Cherry, pomegranate and red currants predominate with additional notes of cedar, tobacco and leather. With aeration, the wine becomes very savory and pairs well with lamb, pork, steak and aged cheeses.

WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "2001 is a great vintage for all the wines from La Rioja Alta but the long-awaited 2001 Gran Reserva 890 is otherworldly. Read More...
2001 was a slow maturing vintage which produced smaller grapes especially in the old vineyards on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria in the villages of Brinas, Labastida and Villalba where the vineyards that make it into this wine are located. The final blend contains a majority of Tempranillo with 3% Graciano and 2% Mazuelo. The wine ferments with the natural yeasts attached to the grapes in stainless steel vats and is aged for six years in used American oak barrels with 12 manual rackings. A selection of the best barrels were blended together and bottled unfiltered in March 2008. Only 15,000 bottles were produced. It shows (even) younger and more concentrated than the 2004 904, a darker shade of red and a somehow backward and reticent nose (relatively speaking) of forest floor, cold bonfire, antique shop, truffles, game, sandalwood, nutmeg and clove. The fruit is also a little darker and the palate more austere, but still showing vibrant and supple, with clean flavors and a great finish. This is my favorite modern time 890. Bravo!"

Aged Rioja just doesn’t get much better than this! From one of the original and most historic wineries in Spain’s famous wine-producing region, La Rioja Alta knocked it out of the park with their excellent 2001 vintage. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate practically gushes about this wine, calling it “otherworldly.” Amazingly, this is a current release as Rioja Alta determined it is entering the perfect window for drinking. We wholeheartedly agree and note this wine also has the ability to age gracefully in a cool cellar for many more years. Absolutely delicious!

La Cuesta and Montecillo in the villages of Fuenmayor and Cenicero, and the Garnacha from old head-pruned vines at 600 meters altitude in Tudelilla, in Rioja Baja, from plots next to their Finca La Pedriza. Those should soon be mature enough to go into the wine (they were planted in 2004 and they will make it into the Ardanza blend from 2007-2008). The grapes are fermented separately with natural yeasts and the Tempranillo then matured in American oak barrels averaging four years old for 36 months, while the Garnacha matured in second- and third-use American oak barrels for 30 months. The nose is very fresh, with notes of beef blood, iron, cherries in liqueur, some subtle leather and spices plus notes of autumn forest and truffles. The palate is more lively and has some tannins that would feel better integrated with some food or a little bit of time in bottle It was bottled in November 2011. This will be released around September/October 2015, so by the time it hits the shelves it will be more polished. Great value for money. "

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - " Brilliant red. Lively, oak-spiced raspberry and cherry scents are complemented by candied rose and vanilla, with a smoky mineral topnote providing added lift. Sappy and seamless on the palate, offering juicy red fruit, mocha and coconut flavors plus a suggestion of sweet chewing tobacco. In a graceful, approachable style, finishing with strong, thrust and silky, late-arriving tannins. While this suave Rioja is quite enjoyable now, I'd give it some more time in the cellar so that the American oak is able to integrate with the wine's fruit."
