along with candied fruit flavors. Full, rich, broad, intense and elegant, this well structured and spicy Riesling shows more tannins than the Schlossberg, but reveals a very juicy and meaty palate of good concentration. Very long in the finish and stilly young, this medium-dry Riesling should age very well."

this region from the dramatic weather variations experienced in other nearby growing areas. True to the appellation, Alexana's 80-acre property possesses an incredibly diverse and complex series of soils and exposures. Located between 360 and 640 feet above sea level, the site has eighteen soil types spread over a combination of rolling hills, steep slopes and some rugged terrain.

Stunning and bright, the Alexana 2012 Riesling is clean, crisp and austere - almost Alsatian-style Riesling. Abounding with green apple and loads of minerals, the texture is rich and expansive. Grapefruit, honeysuckle and a hint of petrol come together to create a complex wine with intense layers and brilliant acidity, perfect for pairing with spicy food.

ROBERT PARKER 91 POINTS: A heady, esterous nose of over-ripe cantaloupe, white peach, quince preserves, and fading lily informs the Boxler 2009 Riesling Read More...
Sommerberg Vendange Tardive – harvested in the Dudenstein soon after the “regular” bottling from that site – leading to a lush and soothing palate on which quince preserves, peach, nutmeg, and liquefied lily are well-supported by sweetness. There is a fine sense of primary juiciness that – along with hints of fruit pit bitterness – helps moderate the sweetness of a sedate finish slightly less sustained and more diffuse than that of the corresponding “regular” bottling. Expect this to age well for at least 12-15 years. Jean Boxler relates that in 2009 he picked some parcels of young wines early due to stress, then sold off the juice; and any under 15 years’ age he didn’t even bother to pick. Eventually, when he harvested his older vines and best sites, the sugar levels were the same – but not the flavors. He deftly charted a course with most of the resulting wines between alcohol and residual sugar, but to the extent it was unavoidable, sinned on the side of sweetness. From 2008, almost predictably given the track record at this address, Boxler rendered sharply focused, minerally complex, yet seductively fruit-filled wines that should prove excellent both as keepers and as partners with cuisine. Boxler compares these wines with his 2002s and finds then “definitely more interesting than the 2001s.” While most of the 2008s finished fermenting already by Christmas – which is par for the course chez Boxler – he points out that several of the extraordinary wines from the Brand lingered into spring. (For some detail on among other things Boxler’s different Riesling parcels, see my report in issue 188.)

cultivated by mass selections and so remained indigenous. The 2013 Heiligenstein Erste Lage Alte Reben is made from Riesling vines averaging 45 years with the oldest up to 70 and 80 years. These vines, says Willi Bründlmayer, give small and super ripe berries with a highly intense aroma and concentrated taste. Indeed the steel-fermented wine which aged in 2800 liter barrels until it was bottled in late summer 2014 is extremely deep, complex and elegant on the nose, indicating dusty mineral aromas interplaying with ripe and dried apple and discreet citrus flavors. This is a young, pure, intense and piquant Riesling of great elegance, finesse and balance that is very firmly structured if not still somewhat edgy but has the serenity, calm and finesse of a great wine. It tastes (and really is) less sweet than the Lyra and also the alcohol is more moderate (13% instead of 13.5%). I wouldn't touch it for at least for five years but I'd be happy to cellar as much as I need until 2030. Stephan Reinhardt.(92+)

WINE ENTHUSIAST - 96 POINTS
"Old vines on the Heiligenstein hill offer a richly textured, impressive wine. There is terrific concentration allied to fragrant acidity, hints of white flowers and apricot fruit flavors. The future for this powerfully dense wine is considerable, so don’t drink before 2018." — R.V. (2/1/2014)

with raisin aromas accented by springtime spiciness plus herb and slate nuances. This is an extremely sappy and piquant Ode to the Kabinett predicate. With its low alcohol level at 10% and a judicious measure of residual sugar that doesn't make it too sweet but leaves it dry and mineral enough to let you quaff a bottle on your own in less that 30 minutes, you bet! The wine will age for more than a decade. A must buy.

like tartness and mouthwatering savor, all enrobed in lusciously ripe, white peach and apple on a plush palate. “This site has an effect a lot like Schutt,” explains Lucas Pichler, “because the eroded stone that form its basis followed the creases and crevices in the hillside that are precisely what conduct cool air down from the woods above the vineyards.” Wafting hints of chamomile and suffusion of crushed stone add to the interest and allure of this refined, long-finishing Riesling that should prove worth following through at least 2022."

“In recent years,” notes Lucas Pichler, “we’ve been harvesting a little earlier in order to depress the alcohol levels a bit,” which in 2012 meant among other things beginning with Gruner Veltliner Federspiel already in the third week of September. After what I had tasted thus far of the vintage, I was amazed to find the Rieslings here in aggregate even finer than the Gruner Veltliners, a pattern that was to be dramatically accentuated at nearby Alzinger. (I did not get chance on my most recent visit to catch-up with Pichlers’ Sauvignon Blanc from this vintage.

Icewine is winter's gift to the wine lover and one of the best-kept secrets of the wine world. Grapes used to make Icewine are left on the vine well into December and January. Read More...
The ripe berries are dehydrated through constant freezing and thawing which concentrates the sugars and acids, thereby intensifying the flavours. The grapes are painstakingly picked by hand in their natural frozen state with yields often as little as 5% to 10% of normal. Genuine icewine must follow VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) regulations that prohibit any artificial freezing of grapes. Much of the water in the juice remains frozen as ice crystals during the pressing, and only a few drops of sweet concentrated juice are salvaged. Sublime aromatics of fresh lime, apricot, grapefruit and peach blossoms with a slight mineral edge. A racy interplay of sweet and tart offer up echoing flavors of lemon, lime and candied apricot. Icewine is intensely sweet and flavorful in the initial mouth sensation. The balance is achieved by the acidity, which gives a clean, dry finish. Truly a vibrant and refreshing experience!
