it has an expressive perfume of pain grille, pencil lead, espresso, mineral, blueberry, and blackberry. This is followed by a full-bodied, large-scaled wine with enough tannin to suggest that 8-10 years of cellaring is warranted. named after the twenty-third letter of the Greek alphabet. In 2006, he began working with a select group of growers willing to convert their old vines vineyards into organically- and ultimately biodynamicallyfarmed sites with the goal of unleashing the potential of Ribera by creating the purest expression possible.

WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - The 2010 Psi has a more tightly wound bouquet than the 2009 with fresh blackberry, blueberry and vanilla essence that is well defined and harmonious. The palate is very well defined and the tannins, a little finer and more filigree than the 2009. It is fresh and natural, with precise dark berry and balsamic notes towards the finish. Thankfully the 2010 maintains its natural, almost -laid-back- persona and it represents the best Psi to date. Drink 2013-2019.

drinking wine. We were immediately impressed by the intense, violet color and vivid aromas showing black fruit and licorice. A very subtle, toasted oak background combines with earthy-mineral notes. Hacienda Monasterio is a 150-hectare estate located between Pesquera and Valbeuna de Duero in the D.O. Ribera del Duero. At the end of the 19th century, this property was owned by Read More...
the Lecanda family, who were pioneers of the region and in fact the first owners of Vega Sicilia. The estate was purchased by current owner Carlos del Rios in the early 1990s. His wine background is in fact rooted south in Jerez, as his family has been in the sherry business for decades with Tio Pepe (and now the larger Gonzalez-Byass parent company). Carlos built the current winery in 1991 with French architect Philippe Mazieres who designed the spectacular cellars for Château Margaux and Château D’Yquem. Peter Sissick (of Pingus fame – which came after Monasterio) has served as consulting winemaker since the estate’s beginning with local winemaker Carlos de la Fuente. Vineyards are planted primarily to Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and specifically to three types that are based on very old selections. The vineyards are situated on limestone soils and at a south facing exposure.

TASTING NOTES: Peter Sisseck of Pingus fame makes the wines of Hacienda Monasterio. Sourced from estate vineyards, it's a blend of 75% Tinto Fino and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec aged for 17 months in 40% new French oak. Deep crimson colored, it offers up an enticing bouquet of mineral, lightly simmered créme de cassis and compote of black cherry. Savory, ripe, and already complex on the palate.

s none of either in this wine. The tannins are supple and unobtrusive and the acid adds a light edge of crispness that does nothing to undercut what is a truly amazing depth and richness. It shows extraordinary balance and finesse!

an extreme climate change between day and night helping to produce wines with an excellent color, structure, acidity and suitable for aging in barrels. And this wine certainly shows its roots-- while definitely in the affordable category of wine in general, this one drinks way above its price point and reflects well the pedigree of its terroir. The nose is sweet, loaded with dark plum jam, wood spice, black cherry, pepper and a touch of salt lick/coarse sea salt. The palate is replete with rich fruit, cherries and plums, while minerality balances with earth, spice and appropriate acidity to lead into a moderately long, tasty finish. This is solid wine and a good red for warmer weather.
