old barrels (same for the Réserve). Dumarcher encourages decanting, saying his wines need air, and he likes them to be served at cellar temperature. They are textured, round, ripe gourmand wines, and aeration brings out a finely detailed nuance, a potpourri of Provençal spice and herbs.

Burgundian Yves Cheron graduated from the Lycée Viticole in Beaune in 1983 and headed south the following year to assume control of the family’s new domaine in the Southern Rhône. Read More...
His father, Denis, Cheron, recognized the untapped potential of some of the region’s lesser-known appellations back in the early 1960s and left Burgundy to set up shop in this sun-baked sub-region of Provence. Denis purchased a production facility in Vacqueyras and began vinifying wines for several area growers. It wasn’t long before he had earned the trust and friendship of his client-vignerons. In 1982, one of them, the heirless owner of Grand Montmirail in Gigondas, decided to retire and gave Denis right of first refusal to buy his domaine in the appellation’s southeast sector.
An earthy nose of violets, white pepper and sea salt leads to a palate rich in flavor: dark fruits, savory herbal tones, notes of briar and tilled soil. One of the many reasons why we love this region in the south of France are on display in this bottling: the fantastic price of this bottling is trumped by the quality of the wine inside, it will drink wonderfully with or without food, it's easy-going and relaxed, like the Rhône sun.

produces a classically spicy, full-bodied wine that speaks clearly of the “garrigue” of the region. The grapes are destemmed before the fermentation and the cuvaison is on the order of three weeks duration. The wine is bottled without filtration after twenty to twenty-four months of “elevage”. The Manarine Cotes du Rhone is our essential wine in this category. We now purchase 15,000 bottles per annum."

in Gigondas. On what was once the site of a Roman villa, Louis’ cellars show spectacular remains of old, Roman vinification vats carved into the limestone. Here, Louis works with different grape varietals from the Rhône, vinifying each parcel separately. He has recently taken to acting as a micro-négociant, working closely with top growers in the northern part of the region who still work with la vieille sérine, an ancient version of Syrah. Producing only a few precious barrels of each cuvée, Louis is helping to save the authenticity and the identity of many great old Côte Rôtie parcels, and now those of Hermitage and Crozes, by keeping them out of the hands of the large, corporate négociants in the area.
Deep ruby. Smoke- and game-accented aromas of blackberry, cherry and licorice, with a subtle peppery overtone. Sappy and precise in the mouth, offering slightly medicinal flavors of bitter cherry and dark berries. Sweeter on the focused, gently tannic, nicely persistent finish. -International Wine Cellar

In 1982, one of them, the heirless owner of Grand Montmirail in Gigondas, decided to retire and gave Denis right of first refusal to buy his domaine in the appellation’s southeast sector.

Since taking over for his father, Yves has expanded the family’s vineyard holdings into neighboring Beaumes de Venise and Vacqueyras and now produces an impressive line of pure, elegantly-structured, Grenache-based reds without the rustic characteristics so common in wines from this region. All of the domaine’s vines are on gently-sloping hillsides at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range. Yves has also established long-term grape contracts with like-minded growers in Sarrians, Seguret and Violes for another 60 acres, which he uses for his Côtes du Rhône. Yves monitors each parcel and decides when to harvest. He then vinifies this excellent value red in the same manner as his Gigondas and Vacqueyras.
