of the 2009. While it doesn’t have the over the top exuberance of the prior vintage, it offers incredibly pure, detailed and classic aromas and flavors of black pepper, currants, blackberry, mineral and smoked bacon fat. Full-bodied, layered and deeply concentrated, yet also graceful and seamless, this knockout effort should require a decade to come around and have 3-4 decades of longevity."

old vines in the “La Landonne” lieu-dit. This wine is more subtle, more elegant and “quieter” if you will than the “Chavaroche”. At the same time, it is very much a Levet wine with a bouquet of violets, wild berries, a touch of animal and resinous-like tannins that speak of the inclusion of stems (a hallmark of the Levet tradition). The “Journaries” is approachable at an earlier stage than its companion “La Chavaroche” but, that being said, it is a wine that not only ages gracefully but almost requires a touch of patience. We now import approximately 1500 bottles plus magnums of this cuvée each vintage." MADROSE.COM

percent of the fruit comes from their holdings on the Cote Brune. It boasts a dense purple color along with a sweet nose of asphalt, licorice, forest floor, blackberries, cassis and bouquet garni, sensational concentration and sweet tannins. The structure, freshness and minerality suggest another 3-4 years of cellaring may be beneficial. It has 25 years of potential evolution."

WINE SPECTATOR 94 POINTS: "Lots of bramble and anise notes pump along, with blackberry and boysenberry accents chiming in. The juicy, focused finish features finely beaded acidity, letting a sweet tapenade element stretch out while the structure sits in reserve. Should flesh out in the cellar. Best from 2015 through 2025. 200 cases imported." –JM

Guigal before establishing their own vineyard in 1987. Yves Gangloff draws his wine-making experience from the time he spent at the Rhône Domaine Delas.
The intensely fruity Côte-Rôties of Gangloff has won numerous fans, among those many sommeliers, who enjoy matching them with local black truffle dishes. Gangloff labels -usually voluptuous nudes, are painted by Yves' brother. Made with 8% Viognier from small sites centred on Tupins and Combard in the Côte Blonde, this is fleshy, spicy and indulgent, but with finely tailored tannins and beautiful poise on the finish, bearing all the hallmarks of Gangloffian excellence and tempting potential drinkers to an early symposium.

The spirit of Jacques Reynaud, the godfather of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is always present. When the legendary founder of Château Rayas died suddenly in 1997, his wife asked their nephew, Read More...
Emmanuel Reynaud, to take the reins at both Château Rayas and Château Fonsalette. Already making wines at his father's Château des Tours, Emmanuel agreed.

He is somewhat reclusive, and can be found working his vineyards at most any time of day, every day. Emmanuel does not revel in the fame and notoriety that come with making such sought-after and acclaimed wines, but he continues to carry the mantle of his famous forebears, producing hauntingly aromatic wines at his three estates: Château Rayas, Château des Tours and Château de Fonsalette.

Situated in an old house flanked on both sides by tall towers (hence "des Tours"), Château des Tours is Emmanuel's own family estate, which he took over from his father, Bernard, in 1989. Emmanuel is, at heart, a farmer, and here he grows food for his family, in addition to grapes. Like all Reynaud vineyards, these are tended with the same organic methods, manually plowed, harvested much later than other producers and centered around a reverence for old-vine Grenache.

Château des Tours is located in Sarrians, Côtes-du-Rhône, just outside Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Weighty, complex and savory, the wines produced here are among the most well-regarded, sought-after bottles of the appellation.

Burgundian Yves Cheron graduated from the Lycée Viticole in Beaune in 1983 and headed south the following year to assume control of the family’s new domaine in the Southern Rhône. Read More...
His father, Denis, Cheron, recognized the untapped potential of some of the region’s lesser-known appellations back in the early 1960s and left Burgundy to set up shop in this sun-baked sub-region of Provence. Denis purchased a production facility in Vacqueyras and began vinifying wines for several area growers. It wasn’t long before he had earned the trust and friendship of his client-vignerons. In 1982, one of them, the heirless owner of Grand Montmirail in Gigondas, decided to retire and gave Denis right of first refusal to buy his domaine in the appellation’s southeast sector.
An earthy nose of violets, white pepper and sea salt leads to a palate rich in flavor: dark fruits, savory herbal tones, notes of briar and tilled soil. One of the many reasons why we love this region in the south of France are on display in this bottling: the fantastic price of this bottling is trumped by the quality of the wine inside, it will drink wonderfully with or without food, it's easy-going and relaxed, like the Rhône sun.

in Gigondas. On what was once the site of a Roman villa, Louis’ cellars show spectacular remains of old, Roman vinification vats carved into the limestone. Here, Louis works with different grape varietals from the Rhône, vinifying each parcel separately. He has recently taken to acting as a micro-négociant, working closely with top growers in the northern part of the region who still work with la vieille sérine, an ancient version of Syrah. Producing only a few precious barrels of each cuvée, Louis is helping to save the authenticity and the identity of many great old Côte Rôtie parcels, and now those of Hermitage and Crozes, by keeping them out of the hands of the large, corporate négociants in the area.
Deep ruby. Smoke- and game-accented aromas of blackberry, cherry and licorice, with a subtle peppery overtone. Sappy and precise in the mouth, offering slightly medicinal flavors of bitter cherry and dark berries. Sweeter on the focused, gently tannic, nicely persistent finish. -International Wine Cellar
