Louis Barruol is an indefatigable force in the Rhône. He is the fourteenth generation in his family to be making wine in this sixteenth-century domaine in Gigondas. On what was once Read More...
the site of a Roman villa, Louis’ cellars show spectacular remains of old, Roman vinification vats carved into the limestone. Here, Louis works with different grape varietals from the Rhône, vinifying each parcel separately. He has recently taken to acting as a micro-négociant, working closely with top growers in the northern part of the region who still work with la vieille sérine, an ancient version of Syrah. Producing only a few precious barrels of each cuvée, Louis is helping to save the authenticity and the identity of many great old Côte Rôtie parcels, and now those of Hermitage and Crozes, by keeping them out of the hands of the large, corporate négociants in the area. Together, he and Kermit blend our Cypress Cuvée (Rouge) and Sunflower Cuvée (Blanc) from his own vineyards, and the other Northern Rhône wines from a selection of Louis’ purchases. Louis selects the best parcels he can find, and then Kermit shows up and either has a cuvée bottled unfiltered, or he blends to find the assemblage that satisfies his esthetic criteria.

with zippy acidity and a touch of white spices to make it a winner at the dinner table. Not overly complex but a crowd pleaser! It is a nicely balanced food wine, with solid but not overwhelming alcohol at 13.5%. An extremely good value! Food match: It calls for grilled meat or poultry! Particularly fine with Summer barbeques! But also charcuterie, pizza, pasta, etc…! Easy going!

The freshness, exotic tropical fruits, fragrant bouquets, dry, fleshy mid-palates and crisp finishes of these wines will be admired by consumers. ne Valley, their goal is to purchase wine from old, established primarily Grenache vineyards. What sets this venture apart from other negociants is that it is run with the savoir-faire of truly exceptional winemakers working in perfect partnership. This particular wine is a stunning testimony to their skill and vision! It delivers concentrated dollops of ripe blackberry, black cherry fruit in conjunction with a traditional sense of place that captures scintillating hints of spice, sweet earth and cracked pepper. Given this wine’s pedigree, vintage origin and generous price, it’s a complete “no-brainer” in terms of “a lot for a little.” Don’t miss it!

Tannic and dense ruby/purple, it is more masculine and austere than usual, but still concentrated with tangy acidity, loads of tannin, and impressive levels of concentration and richness. This is a beauty that will require patience. Give it 3-4 years of bottle age and then drink it over the following 10-12 years. The Ogiers are a wonderful family, and it’s gratifying to see the extraordinary quality of wine that continues to emerge from them. The son Stephane has taken over fully from his dad, who seems to be inching into full retirement, and continues to push the estate to higher and higher levels of quality."

ROBERT PARKER 90-93 POINTS:"Last year the 2010 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde was revealing some green pepper notes, but that problematic issue has been completely resolved. The wine now offers up lots of Christmas fruitcake, tapenade, black currant, forest floor, incense and camphor characteristics. Although not as luxurious, extravagantly thick and viscous as the 2009, the 2010 will be drinkable early in life and should evolve for 10-15 years."
