and cassis-styled fruit, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Trois Sources is medium-bodied, beautifully textured and possesses fine, polished tannin on the finish. Slightly more rounded and textured than the Les Hauts Lieux, this beauty comes from sandy soils (the same region where the Reserve comes from) located on a north-facing slope, at a slightly lower elevation than where the Les Hauts Lieux comes from. Perfumed, complex and rich, it should drink nicely for 10-12 years. Drink now-2023."

rock star in the vintage and checks in as a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre and the balance Counoise and Cinsault, which was aged all in foudre. Harvested very late (and this estate normally harvests on the early side) and not wrapping up until October, it possesses gorgeous purity, with mineral-tinged aromas of blackberry, currants, licorice, ground herbs and violets all soaring from the glass. An all-around powerful, structured and rich 2011, with a full-bodied mouthfeel, terrific acidity and big tannin, it will be one of the longest-lived wines in the vintage. Give it 2-3 years in the cellar, and drink bottles through 2026. Drink 2017-2026."

the glass, reinforced by a core of cassis, cherry and plum pâte de fruit, hoisin sauce, warm ganache and well-roasted apple wood notes. Hefty, but suave and seamless. The finish lets graphite and licorice elements glide through. The structure is dense, polished and perfectly integrated, resulting in lovely length. Should be a beauty after cellaring. Best from 2017 through 2032."

eROBERT PARKER 95-98 POINTS - "Tasted from multiple foudres, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape is stunning! Showing surprising depth and concentration in the vintage, with full-bodied richness and texture, all of the samples showed perfumed, complex aromatics, fantastic mid-palates and serious back-end structure. Less forward than the 2011, with plenty of oomph, it will most likely require short-term cellaring to come around, and have a broad drink window."

and sweet black cherry aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and already approachable, it nevertheless has the tannic structure and concentration to evolve for 10-15 years.

This 120 acres estate, under the leadership of the Maurel brothers and oenologist Philippe Cambie, continues to fashion some of the most profound wines on the planet. Their 2012s, which is a vintage compared to a mix of 2009 and 2010 by Vincent, fall just short of what was accomplished here in 2010 and 2007, but are incredible wines that certainly rank at the top of the vintage. Readers should also check out the retrospective from this estate in Issue 214 to get an idea how these wines evolve."

WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "A dark, loamy style, with warm tar and espresso notes underscoring the core of black Mission fig, Black Forest cake and steeped plum fruit. Juniper and singed alder hints add texture and contrast on the finish. Best from 2015 through 2027. 500 cases imported." –JM

VINOUS MEDIA 90-92 POINTS - "Opaque ruby. High-pitched raspberry, floral pastille and Asian spice aromas are deepened by notes of cola and licorice. Deeper and darker in character on the palate, offering sweet cherry and black raspberry flavors and a suggestion of spicecake. Finishes silky and long, with exotic spice and floral qualities and smooth, well-knit tannins." -- Josh Raynolds

The famous appellation of Chateauneuf de Pape in the Southern Rhone has had a string of excellent vintages, but encountered challenges during the 2013 growing season. The spring was one of the coldest and wettest in recent years, greatly affecting the quality of the Grenache grapes, which are the dominant grapes in most Southern Rhone wines. As a result, many producers are not bottling any Chateauneuf de Pape wine from the 2013 vintage. Fortunately there are some excellent 2012s still available, which Chateauneuf fans would be wise to stock up on.

An excellent example comes from the terrific producer, Clos Saint Jean. Brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel make delicious wines sourced from old vines of the famed La Crau vineyard. In fact, the Clos Saint Jean bottling has been one of our best-selling Chateauneuf de Pape wines for the past several years. The critics have spoken and gave very consistent scores and praise for this delicious wine. This wine delivers full-bodied, hedonistic pleasure in a glass and should not be missed!

WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS: "A flashy style, with red licorice and warm fruitcake notes backed by flavors of plum sauce and boysenberry preserves. Singed apple wood and licorice details fuel the finish. Best from 2015 through 2025. 2,665 cases made." –JM

VINOUSMEDIA 91 POINTS: "Bright violet color. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, lavender and garrigue, with a smoky nuance adding complexity. Fleshy and broad on the palate, offering sweet blueberry and cherry compote flavors that become more lively with air. Finishes juicy, supple and long, with sneaky tannins adding shape and folding smoothly into the wine's fruit." -- Josh Raynolds

When the Hi-Time staff tasted this beautiful Chateauneuf du Pape from Chateau Fortia, the reaction was universal. We all wanted more! This is a delicious wine loaded with an alluring nose, incredible fresh fruit and silky tannins. As one of our wine buyers noted, “This is the taste that put Chateauneuf du Pape on the map.” As an added bonus, very few wines from this great appellation come in at such a great price. It continues to be an outstanding value, which has been a hit with our customers throughout the years.

This is traditional Chateauneuf du Pape at its best from a winery known for their commitment to quality. After World War 1, Baron Le Roy Boiseaumarie led the effort to restore the devastated winery as well as the region. He was selected by his peers to initiate and lead a new organization of producers in Chateauneuf du Pape. As President of the organization, the Baron established strict standards regarding permitted grape varieties, allowable yields and the boundaries of the appellation. These eventually became the template for the AOC laws in the appellation. Enjoy the fruits of his labor with this wine which is absolutely delicious now, but capable of aging as well.

Chateauneuf is ready to drink much younger than the traditional tough wines. Their 100 acres are planted in a simplified mixture of Grenache, Cinsault, Mouvedre and Syrah together with a small proportion of white varieties.
A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and a light note of Cinsault. The wines are full bodied, rich textured and soft at the same time able to change according to the vintage from sweet black fruits, red fruits, exotic fruits, kirsch, ripe plum mixed with spice notes, leather and smoked: a rich style with mouth finals long and heady. Wines made for aging but can be drunk from their fourth year up to their fifteenth year and often longer for the best vintages.
