bottled right after my visit, the 2010 Beaucastel had already been put in bottle. This is a gorgeous wine, a classic blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise and the balance the other permitted varietals in the appellation. Deep purple, with loads of bouquet garni, beef blood, blackberry, kirsch, smoke and truffle, this wine is full-bodied, rich and showing even better than it did last year. I still think it needs 3-5 years of cellaring, and it should last for 25-30 years, as most of the top vintages of Beaucastel do."

and loads of raspberry and black cherry fruit. It is a full-bodied, slightly more reserved and less exuberant effort than the 2007 was at a similar age. It will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and last for 10-15 years."

WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "Densely packed, but deliciously racy, with linzer torte and blackberry confiture notes coursing along, supported by mouthwatering toasted anise, roasted apple wood and graphite notes. The long finish flashes a Turkish coffee edge but remains silky overall. Best from 2015 through 2025. 750 cases made." –JM

Made from 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre from 55-year-old vines, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a stunning perfume of creme de cassis, kirsch, incense, licorice and a vague notion of beef blood and roasted Provencal herbs. All of the fruit comes from vines planted in the northern end of the appellation. This exquisite, full-throttle Chateauneuf du Pape should drink well for 15 or more years. It is a major star of the vintage, and probably is reasonably priced as well."

“Winemaker Coralie Goumarre is the first woman in 9 generations to take the reins of the family estate. Her modern approach has brought new energy to the Domaine. She symbolizes a balance between knowledge and creative freedom, wine’s fullness and lightness of the poetry, constancy and defiance. Elegance and femininity clearly indicate Coralie’s personal style.” Imported Heritage CA importer. Coralie is also involved with Femmes Vignes Rhône, an association for women winegrowers, makers or those working in the wine business in the Rhône Valley. Their aim is to promote the role of women in the traditionally masculine environment of wine.

of this offering comes from the famed terroir in the northern Chateauneuf du Pape sector known as La Gardiole. Yields were 15-20 hectoliters per hectare, and the 2010 tips the scales at 15.5% natural alcohol. It displays a slightly darker ruby/plum/purple color than the traditional cuvee along with deep black currant and black cherry fruit intermixed with Christmas fruitcake, cedarwood, spice box and garrigue notes. A classic wine of Provence as well as Chateauneuf du Pape, with firm tannins in the finish, it is slightly less exotic and open-knit than its sibling, but it is very concentrated with impressive potential as well as longevity. It is good to see this cuvee return to form after a somewhat indifferent showing last year. This wine should drink well for 15 or more years."

The Cuvée Alexis Establet introduced in 1997 and named after one of the family’s ancestors is made 100% of the fruits of the 95 year-old Grenache vines. The wine ripens for 12 to 18 months in old and new barrels. It is produced only in the best harvesting years and needs an extraordinarily long aging period in the bottle.

Bold but balanced, strong yet refined, immense but contained. This is one that will be fun to watch evolve. It drinks beautifully now but has the potential to grow further with a bit of time. The nose is chockfull of sweet fruit, mostly ripe berries from raspberry to olallieberry, a bit of cherry, red plum. Elegant earthy spice and a touch of bacon and midnight florals seem to frame the rich depth of concentrated fruit. A touch of bramble as well. In the mouth, sweet fruit dominates but not in a totalitarian way-- the democracy allows for co-stars and is kept in check by excellent acidity and tannins. Ripe berries are in the spotlight with, again, cherry and red plum fruits, white pepper, a hint of anise, back bacon smoke and forest floor. The palate weight is full but lively, the sweet concentration of fruit lasts and lasts in a glorious finish that slowly exits the stage, exultant.

ROBERT PARKER 90 POINTS: "Not surprisingly, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape (Domaine de Vieux Lazaret) possesses more power, concentration and substance. Dense black raspberry, garrigue, licorice and floral notes are found in this pure, impressively full-bodied 2010 along with lots of fat, glycerin, flesh and succulence. ROBERT PARKER 92 POINTS: "The best value from this estate is the sensational 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape, a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre from 50-year-old vines aged in concrete tank as well as old wood foudres. Copious aromas of garrigue, seaweed, ground pepper, creme de cassis and kirsch jump from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied, multidimensional, rich, pure 2010. the Syrah in new oak. This wine displays loads of toasty vanillin notes in a very modern style and is my least favorite 2010. The wine is certainly very good but seems to lack some of the typicity we expect in these wines from Chateauneuf du Pape, and especially a southern French dry red wine. Nevertheless, it is well-made, medium to full-bodied and capable of 10-15 years of aging potential."

is a blend of mostly Grenache and 20% Syrah, with 80% aged in old wood foudres and 20% in small barrels. The alcohol level came in at 15.5%. Classic black raspberry, black cherry, garrigue, and lavender notes hit the palate with considerable authority. The Syrah component provides a slightly deeper purple hue to the color than is apparent in some other vintages. The extra level of concentration due to the tiny yields has resulted in a full-bodied, rich wine with super purity. It is already accessible, and should keep for 10-15 years."

With 25 acres in Chateauneuf du Pape and even more acreage in surrounding Cotes du Rhone areas, this exceptionally well run estate has been producing high quality wines under the Bonnet family regime for at least a decade. The three 2010 Cotes du Rhones I tasted all merit consideration. The 2009 Chateauneuf du Papes are largely drinkable, with the exception of Les Hesperides."
