of raspberry, cherry and black currant fruit and beefy, meaty, subtly herbaceous notes in its aromatics. This spicy, peppery, rich, full-bodied wine was fashioned from vines 40 to 63 years of age. Drink it over the next 12-18 years.

ROBERT PARKER 94 POINTS - "The top cuvee, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Alexis Establet is 100% Grenache from nearly 100-year-old vines. Most Read More...
of this offering comes from the famed terroir in the northern Chateauneuf du Pape sector known as La Gardiole. Yields were 15-20 hectoliters per hectare, and the 2010 tips the scales at 15.5% natural alcohol. It displays a slightly darker ruby/plum/purple color than the traditional cuvee along with deep black currant and black cherry fruit intermixed with Christmas fruitcake, cedarwood, spice box and garrigue notes. A classic wine of Provence as well as Chateauneuf du Pape, with firm tannins in the finish, it is slightly less exotic and open-knit than its sibling, but it is very concentrated with impressive potential as well as longevity. It is good to see this cuvee return to form after a somewhat indifferent showing last year. This wine should drink well for 15 or more years."

The Cuvée Alexis Establet introduced in 1997 and named after one of the family’s ancestors is made 100% of the fruits of the 95 year-old Grenache vines. The wine ripens for 12 to 18 months in old and new barrels. It is produced only in the best harvesting years and needs an extraordinarily long aging period in the bottle.

Bold but balanced, strong yet refined, immense but contained. This is one that will be fun to watch evolve. It drinks beautifully now but has the potential to grow further with a bit of time. The nose is chockfull of sweet fruit, mostly ripe berries from raspberry to olallieberry, a bit of cherry, red plum. Elegant earthy spice and a touch of bacon and midnight florals seem to frame the rich depth of concentrated fruit. A touch of bramble as well. In the mouth, sweet fruit dominates but not in a totalitarian way-- the democracy allows for co-stars and is kept in check by excellent acidity and tannins. Ripe berries are in the spotlight with, again, cherry and red plum fruits, white pepper, a hint of anise, back bacon smoke and forest floor. The palate weight is full but lively, the sweet concentration of fruit lasts and lasts in a glorious finish that slowly exits the stage, exultant.

ROBERT PARKER 90 POINTS: "Not surprisingly, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape (Domaine de Vieux Lazaret) possesses more power, concentration and substance. Dense black raspberry, garrigue, licorice and floral notes are found in this pure, impressively full-bodied 2010 along with lots of fat, glycerin, flesh and succulence. Enjoy this beauty over the next 10-15 years."

the Syrah in new oak. This wine displays loads of toasty vanillin notes in a very modern style and is my least favorite 2010. The wine is certainly very good but seems to lack some of the typicity we expect in these wines from Chateauneuf du Pape, and especially a southern French dry red wine. Nevertheless, it is well-made, medium to full-bodied and capable of 10-15 years of aging potential."

is a blend of mostly Grenache and 20% Syrah, with 80% aged in old wood foudres and 20% in small barrels. The alcohol level came in at 15.5%. Classic black raspberry, black cherry, garrigue, and lavender notes hit the palate with considerable authority. The Syrah component provides a slightly deeper purple hue to the color than is apparent in some other vintages. The extra level of concentration due to the tiny yields has resulted in a full-bodied, rich wine with super purity. It is already accessible, and should keep for 10-15 years."

saddle leather and underbrush. Coming from tiny yields (which were down 50% from 2010), this medium to full-bodied 2011 is gorgeously textured and has solid mid-palate depth, terrific purity of fruit and ripe tannin. Relatively approachable and enjoyable even now, it should nevertheless evolve gracefully for 15-20 years. Drink 2015-2031."

WINE SPECTATOR 94 POINTS: "Very sleek and refined despite the obvious heft, featuring steeped red and black currant fruit studded with bergamot, blood orange, sweet tobacco and alder notes.
