is a blend of 80% tank-aged Grenache and 20% barrel-aged Mourvedre. A big, massive wine, with decadent roasted herbs, black and red fruits, licorice and scorched earth, this full-bodied, mouth-filling and brilliantly concentrated effort doesn’t lack for texture or richness, yet remains fresh and very drinkable. It should drink well for 15-20 years. Drink 2014-2032."

the glass, reinforced by a core of cassis, cherry and plum pâte de fruit, hoisin sauce, warm ganache and well-roasted apple wood notes. Hefty, but suave and seamless. The finish lets graphite and licorice elements glide through. The structure is dense, polished and perfectly integrated, resulting in lovely length. Should be a beauty after cellaring. Best from 2017 through 2032."

eROBERT PARKER 95-98 POINTS - "Tasted from multiple foudres, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape is stunning! Showing surprising depth and concentration in the vintage, with full-bodied richness and texture, all of the samples showed perfumed, complex aromatics, fantastic mid-palates and serious back-end structure. Less forward than the 2011, with plenty of oomph, it will most likely require short-term cellaring to come around, and have a broad drink window."

and sweet black cherry aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and already approachable, it nevertheless has the tannic structure and concentration to evolve for 10-15 years.

This 120 acres estate, under the leadership of the Maurel brothers and oenologist Philippe Cambie, continues to fashion some of the most profound wines on the planet. Their 2012s, which is a vintage compared to a mix of 2009 and 2010 by Vincent, fall just short of what was accomplished here in 2010 and 2007, but are incredible wines that certainly rank at the top of the vintage. Readers should also check out the retrospective from this estate in Issue 214 to get an idea how these wines evolve."

WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "A dark, loamy style, with warm tar and espresso notes underscoring the core of black Mission fig, Black Forest cake and steeped plum fruit. Juniper and singed alder hints add texture and contrast on the finish. Best from 2015 through 2027. 500 cases imported." –JM

VINOUS MEDIA 90-92 POINTS - "Opaque ruby. High-pitched raspberry, floral pastille and Asian spice aromas are deepened by notes of cola and licorice. Deeper and darker in character on the palate, offering sweet cherry and black raspberry flavors and a suggestion of spicecake. Finishes silky and long, with exotic spice and floral qualities and smooth, well-knit tannins." -- Josh Raynolds

The famous appellation of Chateauneuf de Pape in the Southern Rhone has had a string of excellent vintages, but encountered challenges during the 2013 growing season. The spring was one of the coldest and wettest in recent years, greatly affecting the quality of the Grenache grapes, which are the dominant grapes in most Southern Rhone wines. As a result, many producers are not bottling any Chateauneuf de Pape wine from the 2013 vintage. Fortunately there are some excellent 2012s still available, which Chateauneuf fans would be wise to stock up on.

An excellent example comes from the terrific producer, Clos Saint Jean. Brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel make delicious wines sourced from old vines of the famed La Crau vineyard. In fact, the Clos Saint Jean bottling has been one of our best-selling Chateauneuf de Pape wines for the past several years. The critics have spoken and gave very consistent scores and praise for this delicious wine. This wine delivers full-bodied, hedonistic pleasure in a glass and should not be missed!

WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS: "A flashy style, with red licorice and warm fruitcake notes backed by flavors of plum sauce and boysenberry preserves. Singed apple wood and licorice details fuel the finish. Best from 2015 through 2025. 2,665 cases made." –JM

VINOUSMEDIA 91 POINTS: "Bright violet color. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, lavender and garrigue, with a smoky nuance adding complexity. Fleshy and broad on the palate, offering sweet blueberry and cherry compote flavors that become more lively with air. Finishes juicy, supple and long, with sneaky tannins adding shape and folding smoothly into the wine's fruit." -- Josh Raynolds

One cannot think of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the most celebrated cru of the Southern Rhône, without thinking of Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe. The Brunier family is legendary in its own right, Read More...
having been rooted to the enigmatic plateau known as “La Crau” for over one hundred years. The wines of Vieux Télégraphe evoke the concept of terroir in its purest form: they reflect their dramatic climate, the rough terrain that defines the soil, their full sun exposure at a higher altitude, the typicity of the varietals with an emphasis on Grenache, and of course, the influence of their caretakers, the Brunier family. For many, La Crau is Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s grandest cru.

The Bruniers’ story begins in 1898 with Hippolyte Brunier. A modest farmer who lived off the land, Hippolyte kept less than a hectare of vines to make his own wines. His small vineyard was at one of the highest points in between Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Bédarrides, a stony plateau called “La Crau”. The elevation of this terrain had prompted the construction of a communication tower in the late 18th century to transmit telegraph messages between Marseilles and Paris. Otherwise, the allure of this barren landscape is not immediately discernable—there is nothing but galets roulés, or rounded stones, as far as the eye can see. Up so high, the vineyards are exposed to all kinds of elements—rain, hail, scorching sunshine, and especially the unruly Mistral. This was unwelcome terrain where only the toughest vigneron dare plant, although the notorious mistral works wonderfully to prevent rot.

eROBERT PARKER 93 POINTS: "Lastly, the flagship 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape is a classically structured, elegant effort that will evolve gracefully on its balance and harmony. Showing the telltale seaweed, currants, olive, licorice and ample minerality so common in this cuvee, it’s medium to full-bodied, lightly textured and focused on the palate, with plenty of tannin. It needs 3-4 years of cellaring and will have 15-20 years of longevity."

Coming from 100% Grenache and miniscule yields of 22 hectoliters per hectare (which is basically nothing), it offers gorgeous black raspberry, black cherry, herbes de Provence, pepper and Asian spice to go with a medium to full-bodied, silky, refined and elegant style on the palate.
