roasted meats and licorice that flow to a full-bodied, concentrated Chateauneuf du Pape that possesses a core of sweet fruit, gorgeous texture and a heady finish that seems to go on and on. Fully mature, with completely integrated tannin, it is certainly not for the low alcohol crowd, yet offers up a thrillingly rich drinking experience. I don’t see any upside here and would enjoy bottles over the coming handful of years."

ROBERT PARKER 96 POINTS - "Two brilliant successes are Brunel’s cuvees of 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. His limited cuvee of approximately 500 cases of Read More...
the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Centenaire (made from 80% Grenache aged in foudre, and the balance Syrah and Mourvedre aged in one- to three-year-old small barrels) comes primarily from a parcel of 120-year-old vines in the northern part of the appellation in the lieu-dit known as Farguerol. This cuvee has only been made in vintages such as 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, and now 2007. Deep ruby/purple in color, the wine exhibits very up-front, precocious, sexy plum, black currant, and sweet cherry notes intermixed with some floral hints, licorice, and garrigue. It is dense, full-bodied, much more supple and silky-textured than the 2005 or 2001, but seemingly more concentrated than the 2000 version of this wine. It is a brilliant, full-throttle, seamless Chateauneuf du Pape capable of lasting for up to two decades, although few people will be able to resist its exuberant youthfulness. A moderately-sized estate for Chateauneuf du Pape (just under 44 acres), this is always a benchmark for the quality of any given vintage thanks to the energetic and very talented proprietor, Andre Brunel. He produced two of the best 2008s I tasted."

the most complex and concentrated wines of the vintage. An extraordinary perfume of white chocolate, roasted Provencal herbs, lavender, licorice, black cherries and sweet black currants is followed by a broad, expansively flavored wine with a superb full-bodied texture, terrific purity and a 40+ second finish. In fact, the tannins are such that 1-2 years of bottle age may be beneficial. This 2008 should evolve for 15 years. It is almost impossible to believe that something like this could have been achieved in this vintage."

The southern Rhone has seen some very good vintages over the past few years. Robert Parker rates 2007 as a 98 point vintage, 2009 a 93 point and 2010 another 98 pointer. Clos Saint Jean has been one of the top performers in all of those vintages. They have been given outstanding scores for their 3 top bottling’s. Sanctum Sanctorum, Deus Ex Machina, and La Combe Des Fous have grabbed an amazing nine 99 or 100 point scores from 2007 thru 2010 combined. Unfortunately there is never enough wine to go around (only 1 case and a few mags for the entire year). When we tasted the 2008 La Combe Des Fous, there was only one thing to say “we’ll take it all!”

Lost between the 100 point 2007 and the 99 point 2009 is the absolutely stunning 2008 La Combe Des Fous. This Cuvee is made from a single plot of mostly Grenache in tank and 20% Syrah in demi-muids. This is a pure, clean, full bodied beauty. Don’t miss your chance to treat yourself to one of Chateauneuf Du Pape’s finest wines. Take one home for the upcoming holiday feast.

and 10% small barrel-aged Syrah from 40- to 85-year-old vines) is a richer, fuller, more intense and compelling example of the traditional cuvee. Given the voluptuous nature and opulence of the 2009 vintage, this wine can be drunk now or cellared for 15 years. It is expansive and full-bodied with copious black cherry and black raspberry fruit notes intertwined with hints of licorice and incense. This seductive effort is irresistible."

about 10%) Mourvedre, the latter aged in small oak barrels. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color and a more modern style than the traditional cuvee or the 100% Grenache cuvee Cornelia Constanza reviewed below. Despite its so-called -modern leanings,- which some people deplore, this is a beauty. Dense purple, with elegant blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as hints of garrigue, vanillin and spice box, it is dense, full-bodied, yet wonderfully precise and fresh, given the vintage's liveliness and vibrancy. In light of some noticeable tannins, give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15-20+ years."

The other half of the vineyard is composed of Syrah and Mourdèvre which produce a very colorful wine, almost chocolate-flavored, with notes of black cherry and blackberry.
The wine presents an intense and deep dress. Nose reveals a bouquet of red berries with pepper notes. It is generous and harmonic in the palate, with elegant tannins.

Made from 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre, it has perfumed kirsch, black raspberry, licorice, dried flowers and roasted meat-like qualities soaring from the glass. It can be consumed anytime over the coming 10-12 years."

WINE SPECTATOR 94 POINTS: "This features a dark, warm ganache spine that holds the cherry compote, plum sauce and steeped currant fruit together. Smoldering charcoal and tobacco notes line the finish. Shows solid muscle for the vintage. Best from 2015 through 2025. 650 cases made." –JM

Exhibiting plenty of sweet spice, red licorice, fruit cake and raspberry-styled notes on the nose, it is medium-bodied, nicely textured and rich on the palate, with a forward, low acid profile geared for drinking over the coming 2-4 years. Drink now-2017.

This 25-acre estate is owned by the Canto family, with the wines made by Jean-Louis. While they normally release three red Chateauneufs, they only produced one cuvee in 2011."
