the estate has an air of calm and serenity. Since the 1970s, it has been in the hands of the Bunan family, now with its third generation of winemakers. With love and passion, the family strives for excellence, combining tradition and modernity to produce wines of character. The family’s respect for and commitment to the vineyards have naturally led to the use of organic and biodynamic farming to protect the grapes and the land. Crops grow on terraced vineyards facing the Mediterranean, featuring Triassic-era soil suited to the perfect expression of the Mourvèdre grape.

by the Cabirau 2011 Cotes du Roussillon Malgre les Functionnaires proof against any negative effects of its nearly 15% alcohol. Tar, Latakia tobacco and black pepper incisively accent this smoky, rich blend of Grenache with roughly 20% Syrah and 15% Carignan, leading to an infectiously juicy and positively mouth-shaking finish. Here is a wonderful example of the vivacity and energy that can be conveyed by ripe Roussillon fruit, not mention an exceptional value. I expect it to drink well through at least 2017."

9 hectares and are planted on a gentle slope of clay and limestone soil with a north – northwest exposure. After a manual harvest, the grapes are destemmed and pressed; the fermentation continues for three weeks in cement cuves at a temperature controlled 18 degrees Celsius; the wine is vinified completely dry. The malo-lactic fermentation is blocked to preserve the freshness of the wine and the wine is normally bottled at some point between May and July of the following year. Total annual production is on the order of 40,000 bottles; somewhere between 6,000 and 9,000 bottles per year are dedicated to the US market." MADROSE.COM

I don’t see any upside here and would enjoy bottles over the coming handful of years."

ROBERT PARKER 96 POINTS - "Two brilliant successes are Brunel’s cuvees of 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. His limited cuvee of approximately 500 cases of Read More...
the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Centenaire (made from 80% Grenache aged in foudre, and the balance Syrah and Mourvedre aged in one- to three-year-old small barrels) comes primarily from a parcel of 120-year-old vines in the northern part of the appellation in the lieu-dit known as Farguerol. This cuvee has only been made in vintages such as 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, and now 2007. Deep ruby/purple in color, the wine exhibits very up-front, precocious, sexy plum, black currant, and sweet cherry notes intermixed with some floral hints, licorice, and garrigue. It is dense, full-bodied, much more supple and silky-textured than the 2005 or 2001, but seemingly more concentrated than the 2000 version of this wine. It is a brilliant, full-throttle, seamless Chateauneuf du Pape capable of lasting for up to two decades, although few people will be able to resist its exuberant youthfulness. A moderately-sized estate for Chateauneuf du Pape (just under 44 acres), this is always a benchmark for the quality of any given vintage thanks to the energetic and very talented proprietor, Andre Brunel. He produced two of the best 2008s I tasted."

the most complex and concentrated wines of the vintage. An extraordinary perfume of white chocolate, roasted Provencal herbs, lavender, licorice, black cherries and sweet black currants is followed by a broad, expansively flavored wine with a superb full-bodied texture, terrific purity and a 40+ second finish. In fact, the tannins are such that 1-2 years of bottle age may be beneficial. This 2008 should evolve for 15 years. It is almost impossible to believe that something like this could have been achieved in this vintage."

The southern Rhone has seen some very good vintages over the past few years. Robert Parker rates 2007 as a 98 point vintage, 2009 a 93 point and 2010 another 98 pointer. Clos Saint Jean has been one of the top performers in all of those vintages. They have been given outstanding scores for their 3 top bottling’s. Sanctum Sanctorum, Deus Ex Machina, and La Combe Des Fous have grabbed an amazing nine 99 or 100 point scores from 2007 thru 2010 combined. Unfortunately there is never enough wine to go around (only 1 case and a few mags for the entire year). When we tasted the 2008 La Combe Des Fous, there was only one thing to say “we’ll take it all!”

Lost between the 100 point 2007 and the 99 point 2009 is the absolutely stunning 2008 La Combe Des Fous. This Cuvee is made from a single plot of mostly Grenache in tank and 20% Syrah in demi-muids. This is a pure, clean, full bodied beauty. Don’t miss your chance to treat yourself to one of Chateauneuf Du Pape’s finest wines. Take one home for the upcoming holiday feast.

It is expansive and full-bodied with copious black cherry and black raspberry fruit notes intertwined with hints of licorice and incense. This seductive effort is irresistible."

about 10%) Mourvedre, the latter aged in small oak barrels. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color and a more modern style than the traditional cuvee or the 100% Grenache cuvee Cornelia Constanza reviewed below. Despite its so-called -modern leanings,- which some people deplore, this is a beauty. Dense purple, with elegant blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as hints of garrigue, vanillin and spice box, it is dense, full-bodied, yet wonderfully precise and fresh, given the vintage's liveliness and vibrancy. In light of some noticeable tannins, give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15-20+ years."

It can be consumed anytime over the coming 10-12 years."

WINE SPECTATOR 94 POINTS: "This features a dark, warm ganache spine that holds the cherry compote, plum sauce and steeped currant fruit together. Smoldering charcoal and tobacco notes line the finish. Shows solid muscle for the vintage. Best from 2015 through 2025. 650 cases made." –JM

Located in the southern portion of Chateauneuf du Pape, and comprised of 55 acres of mostly sandy soils, Domaine Saint Prefert burst onto the scene in 2003 and has since produced outstanding wine after outstanding wine. Run by Isabel Ferrando, the style here is up-front and perfumed, with silky, elegant textures that carry serious amounts of richness without ever seeming heavy. While both 2011 and 2012 are strong here, these showed slightly more straightforward, mid-weight profiles than previous vintages. In addition to these Saint-Prefert releases, she also produces a 100% Grenache cuvee under her own Isabel Ferrando label, Colombis. In addition to the Chateauneufs, don’t miss the Cotes du Rhones from this estate as they give insight into the style and quality here."
