WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "The 2011 Brao is a dark, meaty red produced with a mixture of 70% old-vine Carinena and the rest Garnacha from equally old vines, Read More...
quite powerful and concentrated, with slightly rustic aromas of tree bark, spices and faint flowers intermixed with notes of dark cherries and flavors of black cherries and licorice, with abundant, fine-grained tannins. A powerful red with balance to age. Drink 2014-2018."

STEPHEN TANZER'S INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLARS 92 POINTS - "(70% Samso and 30% Garnacha): Opaque ruby color and highly aromatic scents of blackberry and blueberry liquer, licorice and a hint of lavender. Enters lush and rich on the palate, with impressive freshness, offering flavors of bitter cherry and dark berry liqueur. Finishes long and sweet, with floral note clinging tenaciously."

This is a newer discovery and we are happy to be able to bring this fabulous wine into the store! Acustic Celler is the project of Albert Jané who grew up helping tend vineyards and learning the craft of winemaking from his family. He worked there until he was 33 years old when he fell in love with the rugged landscape and ancient vineyards of Montsant, an area of north-eastern Spain which surrounds Priorat. Albert left the security of the family business to start his own adventure, Acústic Celler. He chose the winery name to reflect his desire to keep his wines, “unplugged.” In other words, to let the terroir and grapes speak for themselves. The old vines provide an amazing nectar of fruit, which is fermented using natural yeasts. Cautious use of barrel-aging helps the wines achieve maturity without hiding the character of the grapes from which they have been made. The flavors of this wine dance on the tongue and somehow manage to achieve richness and lightness at once. Bravo!

was born. Sharing a rarefied position, with vineyards intimately proximate to the origin of this most famous super]Tuscan wine, the Pellegrini family, the owners of Aia Vecchia, have been grape growers in the area for several generations. Owning seventy]four acres of the estates under the Bolgheri DOC, in some of the most favored locations, Aia Vecchia is not only emulating, but surpassing the quality of their more famed neighbors with their brilliant rendition of a super]Tuscan Bordeaux]style blend: Aia Vecchia Sor Ugo.
Characteristics: a long lasting, intense wine continually unfolding in aroma, with notes of spices and forest fruits; its great concentration and structure, the natural expression of the warmth and strength of its territory make it powerful, mineral, rich, complex and evident on the nose and palate.

some outstanding wines. And so they set out contracting with 135 tiny vineyards with 50- to 85-year-old vines and started to make wines from the native varietals of the area. Soon, their farmhouse was turned into a winery and the demand for the wines became more than they could supply. This unique red is made from old vine Callet, Mantonegre, Fogoneu and Syrah fermented in a combination of stainless steel and concrete, aged for over just a year in a combination of French and American oak.

A unique aroma of savory spices, violets and smokiness leads to silky and intense flavors great for duck or stuffed pork chops. If you are a person that is intrigued by the less-than-obvious, this one is for you

It is an exciting time for Spanish winemaking and particularly for the Priorat region which continues its evolution as a producer of thrilling red wines. Although winemaking has taken place in Priorat for centuries, the region really caught the public’s attention in the 1990’s when several producers blazed a trail, focusing on quality. Today, this area is thriving and the demand for its wines continues to grow.

One of the great names associated with winemaking in Spain is Juan Gil, maker of the hugely popular Clio and El Nido wines, which sell out quickly once we get them in the store. One of Gil’s newer ventures is his exciting project in Priorat which he calls Bluegray, named for the color of the slate soils in his vineyards. Bluegray is a blend of 45% Grenache, 30% Mazuelo (Carignan) and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, which is lush and powerful, yet artfully balanced with pure fruit flavors augmented by minerality imparted by the soils. It is made in a ripe, fruit-forward style which seems tailor-made for the American palate.

Deep ruby with heavy staining of the tears, the nose shows focused ripe black fruit and cherry flavors accented by fresh autumn spices, mineral and spicy notes. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied with very smooth tannins. The fresh fruit flavors on display include blackberry, cherry, currant and blue plums. This shows good balance and drinkability with a long, lingering finish. Enjoy on its own or with grilled and roasted beef, aged cheeses and hearty dishes.

s still plenty of energy, acidity and freshness, and powerful fruit flavors that pulse with vibrancy. The best vintage of Pleret to date, this wine benefits from Buil & Giné’s oldest plantings of garnacha and cariñena (over 40 years), blended with cabernet, merlot and syrah."

In the holy pantheon of Spanish red wines, the big, full-bodied wines of Priorat can contend only with Rioja and Ribera del Duero for excellence and prestige. A historical appellation dating back to the 12th Century, Priorat, or “priory,” takes its name from the Carthusian Monastery of Scala Dei founded in 1194 to commemorate the spot where, legend has it, a shepherd had a beatific vision of angels ascending a stairway to heaven. Buil & Gine, a family domaine founded in 1996, has quickly risen to preeminence in the appellation, and is widely considered one of the best young producers in Priorat.

the noble Bordeaux grape. The 2010 Nicolas Catena Zapata is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Malbec sourced from La Piramide, Domingo, Adrianna and Nicasia. The fresh and balanced 2010 produced good ripeness of the fruit but the acidity was also great and the wine finished with 6.5 grams of acidity and a natural pH of 3.5, as the grapes are selected from cold soils. The first vintage was 1997, but this has to be one of their finest. This has the intensity of the Catena Alta Cabernet and the verticality and austerity of the Adrianna Malbec. It has very good acidity and intensity, while it has some velvety tannins. For a minute I was trying to remember the varietals as the sense of place, the freshness and the earthy sensations clearly take over. A superb bottle of wine. This is a wine to age. Drink 2016-2023. The blend changes with each vintage and in 2010 they had very good Petit Verdot so the percentage of it is higher than ever. It's a blend of 60% Malbec and 20% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The wine shows great integration of the oak, with notes of blackcurrant and spices (black pepper), showing restraint and incipient elegance along with underbrush and hints of truffles. I think I've never seen such an elegant Cheval des Andes. The palate reveals very good balance between power and elegance with ripe, fine-grained tannins, good length and freshness. Stronger balsamic notes emerge with time in the glass. This is one of the finest vintages of Cheval des Andes, challenged maybe... by 2011! Keep an eye open for these two vintages. 60,000 bottles produced."

We just received an allocation of one of the most compelling and sought after wines from Argentina. The 2010 Cheval des Andes is a wine of power, grace and depth and is considered one of the best red wines produced in South America. Even better, we are able to offer this high-scoring wine at an unbelievable price, making this one of our best buys of the year. The exceptional quality of this Malbec-dominant blend sets it apart and it consistently receives rave reviews from wine critics. This full-bodied wine is beautifully textured, concentrated and rich and showcases tremendous purity of fruit. All the flavors come together seamlessly culminating in a long, polished finish. This wine can be enjoyed over the next 5 years or more, but is drinking so well now it’s hard to resist.

Cheval des Andes is a partnership between two exceptional estates and a perfect reflection of the Franco-Argentine style. This unique alliance combines the world-class winemaking of the great Bordeaux producer, Château Cheval Blanc (remember Mile’s dream bottle from the movie Sideways?) and the high altitude terroir of Terrazas de Los Andes. The unique location of Luján de Cuyo in the foothills of the Andes gives rise to the production of an intense, expressive and refined wine. Cheval des Andes symbolizes the perfect synergy between the French art of blending and New World creative innovation. Enjoy this expression of world-class winemaking at a quality to price ratio which is hard to beat!

2009 vintage. It is my convinced impression that 2010 offers a very showy and flamboyant interpretation of this 80-20 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend. The density is a bit deeper and the aromas are a tad brighter. Compared to the other wines in its blind flight, the Guado de- Gemoli appeared the darkest and most endowed with Indian spice, black soya, espresso and blackberry essence. Finely chiseled mineral tones of granite and smoke snap it back into immediate focus. Give it another ten years of cellar time. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028."

Giovanni Chiappini is a winemaker who owns a small family run estate in the rich countryside of Bolgheri. Giovanni was born in a farmer’s family, which immigrated to Bolgheri from a small village in Marche in 1954. His parents, Nilo and Rosa, bought 6 hectares of land in the Ferruggini county from the aristocratic family Della Gherardesca. After six years of working experience as a workman in 1978 Giovanni bought his own first piece of land near Strada Bolgherese, which is located right beside the famous Ornellaia estate. During next 18 years Chiappini acquired more land nearby which today form an estate’s production area, where vines and olive trees are mostly cultivated following the local tradition. In the year 2000 the first bottles of wine were put on the market, and since then the family has made its good name not only for the good olive oil but also for the excellent wine.

Giovanni Chiappini believes that it is the vine that makes the wine and therefore everything around them has to be looked after perfectly. Together with Bordeaux varieties traditional Sangiovese and Vermentino are also cultivated. His wines, due to the position of his land, reflect Bolgheri style, matching structure, perfume and elegance. Chiappini is in his way a “simple-guy” winemaker, who succeeded to transform his vast agricultural experience into ability to create noble wines, connecting modern Bolgheri style with an old Tuscan tradition.
