parcel sits on a slope of exposed granite and river stones directly uphill from the famed Clos Apalta vineyard. This Grenache-based wine shows the varietal’s core prettiness with pomegranate and exuberant red cherry. Zesty, mouth-filling, and purely delicious.

Two years ago we discovered the Viña Ventisquero line from Chile. At the time we wrote, “WOW, what a lineup-- pure, multi-layered wines at unbeatable values,” adding several wines across many price points. At a recent trade show, we tasted the full line again and knew it was time to buy up, but this time we were most impressed with “the best of the best” selections from the “Grey” Gran Riserva tier and a few prestige bottlings. Ventisquero owns over 4,000 acres across top growing areas in Chile, from Casablanca, Maipo, Apalta, and more. The “Grey” wines represent the best blocks in the best vineyard from Ventisquero’s vast holdings. Winemaker Felipe Tosso is a star in Chile, but for these higher tier wines benefit from the added assistance of consultant John Duval, famed as the man entrusted to make Penfolds Grange for over 20 years. This collection is impressive and drinks well above their price tags that seem downright modest in the American market.

comes from the steepest, highest two ridges of the Apalta Vineyard and combines equal measure of Carménère (Felipe’s specialty) & Syrah (John Duval’s signature variety). The result is a wine that is both inky and immensely full-bodied and graceful with surprisingly pretty notes of violets and boysenberry. The stony, granite-based soils show most clearly in this wine with a long mineral finish and firm, fine-grained structure. Two years ago we discovered the Viña Ventisquero line from Chile. of silky tannins and hazelnut on the palate. Better in 2016."

The 2010 release of Fattoria del Cerro Vino Nobile was a winner here at Hi Time—a Sangiovese based wine with classic Tuscan sunshine and red cherry fruit, pure, fresh, and deliciously tart. We’ve known the wine for years, but the 2010 was the first to climb the heights and win Gamberro Rosso’s coveted Tre Bicchieri. The 2011 Vino Nobile from Cerro surprised us with a brighter, fresher, deeper flavor profile than the highly touted 2010 vintage, then the 2011 also won Tre Bicchieri. Two years in a row is a major achievement for any Italian producer, but it’s exceptionally rare for a wine that costs less than $20. We think this Vino Nobile will cross categories nicely and please a lot of wine drinkers. Chianti lovers will appreciate the suave red fruit and bright, savory balance, but Fattoria del Cerro’s Vino Nobile also hints at the darker depths and age-worthy structure of a powerful Brunello.

briar and cedar wood with a light touch of mixed spices and tobacco make for a more complex, rich aromatic milieu. The palate continues with the red and dark fruit flavors, suspended in an unctuous body and mouthfeel. Notes of charcuterie and leather meld with silky tannins and appropos acidity leading to a layer of spice and underbrush. The finish is lengthy, tasty and memorable. Bodega Vistalba was built in the year 2002 on a family farm in the heart of Vistalba (Luján de Cuyo), Argentina. The architecture style is “Criollo” or Argentine native style. This blends perfectly into the classic Mendoza terroir. Following the heritage of his ancestors and the traditional winemaking that the first Italian and Spanish immigrants brought to Argentina, this is where owner and winemaker Carlos Pulenta developed his personal undertaking of blending wines involving members of his family, advisors, enologists and a highly-esteemed group of people who knew his land well.

is one of the richest and most opulent vintages of The Signature in the 41 years since the first was made. While the blackcurrant and blackberry fruit flavours dominate the oak, the wine has a certain elegant juiciness that offers drinking at any stage over the next 20+ years, as the tannins are supple and fine, the overall balance perfect."

WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "Blended of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Shiraz, the deep garnet-purple colored 2012 The Signature (Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz) is a benchmark example of this classic South Australia blend. Giving scents of ripe black cherries, blackberries and cassis with underlying cloves, vanilla and menthol hints, it fills the mouth with ripe, seductive but never heavy fruit. Medium-bodied and well framed with firm grainy tannins and balanced freshness, it finishes long and youthfully taut. Always a great value Aussie icon, this vintage is right up there with the best and is certainly one for the cellars of Aussie wine lovers!"

JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS - "A balanced, complete red with currant, spice, meat and berry character. Full body with polished tannins and a long, long finish. Very structured and layered. Turns spicy and flavorful. This is a great wine. Try in 2018."

In April, Jane Ferrari of Yalumba visited Hi-Time and we sampled the astounding 2012 "Signature" Cabernet-Shiraz blend from the Barossa Valley. This sneak peek knocked our socks off so we ordered big and awaited its arrival. Well, the wait is over and the wine is here! The reviews from the wine press have also come in with a trio of critics awarding scores of at least 95 Points. They used words to describe this wine such as elegant, seductive and having overall perfect balance. This delicious red blend is an Aussie Icon whose hallmark is incredible balance and purity of fruit.

The Smith family has been making wine at Yalumba for over 165 years and has produced The Signature for more than 5 decades. Their "Signature" wine is only produced in very good years and 2012 was an exceptional year. It is deep and complex, displaying the silky texture that is the calling card of Yalumba’s red wines. The polished tannins of this remarkable wine make this one which can be enjoyed now, but also one which can be aged for several years. Enjoy!

The ‘Tito’ bottling pays homage to Sebastian’s father and is comprised primarily of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is one juicy, delicious wine which is definitely a crowd pleaser!

We recently sat down with Jose Alberto Zuccardi to enjoy his wines and learn more about his family’s winery. We were thrilled as the Zuccardi’s are taking Argentine winemaking to the next level of quality and refinement by pioneering single vineyard, micro-climate wines in the Uco Valley. Looking forward, customers should begin looking for regional bottlings as well as sub-zones and single vineyard designated bottlings from Argentina as indications of quality. Jose Zucardi’s father originally planted vines in the arid Uco Valley in Mendoza, Argentina. The high altitude vineyard at the foot of the Andes was meant to showcase his irrigation system, which he hoped to sell to others in the agricultural business. Up to that point, the area had been inhospitable to most crops, but the experiment proved to be a success as the grapes flourished, producing outstanding, flavorful wines.

Jose made the wines for many years, but now the primary responsibility belongs to his son, Sebastian. Together, they have brought Argentine wines to new heights and received world-wide recognition for their efforts.

To better understand the soil composition for each plot of land, Sebastian dug numerous holes in their vineyards. This information was used to plant grape varieties in the soils best suited for them. The Zuccardi’s attention to detail extends to all areas of their winemaking with results you can taste in the glass. His passion is evident in the delicious wines he produces and he likes to say, “The identity of a wine comes from a unique combination of vines, climate, soil and people.”
