The palate possesses more structure and backbone compared to the 2009 with blackberry, salted licorice, cracked black pepper and black olive vying for attention. "Perched in the Helshoogt Pass in Stellenbosch, Tokara is blessed with a stunning vista. All of Tokara's wines are sourced from their own vineyards in Stellenbosch, Walker Bay and Elgin. Winemaker Miles Mossop took me through their protfolio of wines that includes some of the finest Cabernet-based blends that I have tasted and a stunning Sauvignon Blanc. I was shocked that Tokara in not currently imported in the USA." Wine Advocate

dried in the nose, it's fully lush and even more alive on the palate. The fruit leads to a rich earthiness on the palate with more spice (cinnamon, cardamom) toward the mid-palate and finish, which is completely borne aloft by a gorgeous layer of acidity-- suddenly, you realize that this is kind of a serious wine at the sub-$16 price point. Vilosell definitely has some gravitas and, while we were pretty happy just tasting it solo, a bit of appropriate food would really let this wine shine through (think BBQ, beef, hearty autumn/winter fare, stews, charcuterie, rich tapas).

Tormentoso is a range of premium, vineyard-focused wines produced by the team at MAN Vintners. "Cabo Tormentoso" (translated as “Stormy Cape” or “Cape of Storms”) is the original name Read More...
for the Cape of Good Hope given to it by the Portuguese explorer Bartholomieu Dias who first rounded the Cape in 1488. The story goes that upon his return home, the Queen of Portugal took an immediate dislike to the name and changed it to “Cabo da Boa Esperança” – the “Cape of Good Hope” as we know it today. There are multiple readings of the word Tormentoso: drama, torment, struggle. All of these seem apt when you consider where their grapes are grown. The vines grow in a dry area with little or no irrigation, but the rocky shale soils of the Agter-Paarl region allow the roots to penetrate deeply, to get to the moisture reserves. The vines have to endure a certain amount of struggle to ripen their grapes, and it's this torment that produces distinctive wines with concentrated flavors and aromas. The nose is a mélange of briar and bramble, earthy tar, dark plum, pepper spice and a subtle minerality, like the scent of oncoming rain. Light brown spices, vanilla bean and grated nutmeg, bring pleasing secondary notes. The palate leads with dark berries and fruits, peppery spice, leather and vanilla oak. Excellent tannins course throughout. A touch of Côte Rotie meets South Africa.

and five spice powder. Stains the palate with intense boysenberry and cherry compote flavors, given spine and lift by a zesty mineral nuance. Densely packed yet lithe, finishing with outstanding thrust and smooth tannins that build slowly."

Legendary Australian Winemaker Chris Ringland and partner Jorge Ordonez have set out to make explosive, rarified bottlings twice before, with Alto Moncayo & El Nido “Clio.” Triga is the newest of these partnerships, this time centered on a local partnership with Tarima/Tarima Hill in Alicante, Spain. The blend is very similar to the early bottlings of El Nido “Clio,” made primarily of extremely low-yielding Monastrell (aka Mourvedre), from mountainside vineyards (the oldest planted in 1925), with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon added to the blend (planted in 1981).

Triga is the hedonistic luscious masterpiece that fans of Alto Moncayo and El Nido “Clio” would expect. Look for an inky, purple black color; ripe blueberry and liqueur-like blackberry fruit complimented by a range of exotic spices. Triga overflows with richness and power, but the vineyard sits on a mountain of fossilized chalk. This limestone influence shows with added minerality and a vibrant, red currant-like raciness underlying the fruit. The Triga has not been scored yet by Wine Spectator, but we’re quite sure it will score as big as it did with last years inaugural release (94 Points). Josh Reynolds at Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar, on the other hand, has jumped on the new release of Triga with a score of 93 points!

Two years ago we discovered the Viña Ventisquero line from Chile. At the time we wrote, “WOW, what a lineup-- pure, multi-layered wines at unbeatable values,” adding several wines across many price points. At a recent trade show, we tasted the full line again and knew it was time to buy up, but this time we were most impressed with “the best of the best” selections from the “Grey” Gran Riserva tier and a few prestige bottlings. Ventisquero owns over 4,000 acres across top growing areas in Chile, from Casablanca, Maipo, Apalta, and more. The “Grey” wines represent the best blocks in the best vineyard from Ventisquero’s vast holdings. Winemaker Felipe Tosso is a star in Chile, but for these higher tier wines benefit from the added assistance of consultant John Duval, famed as the man entrusted to make Penfolds Grange for over 20 years. This collection is impressive and drinks well above their price tags that seem downright modest in the American market.

The 2010 release of Fattoria del Cerro Vino Nobile was a winner here at Hi Time—a Sangiovese based wine with classic Tuscan sunshine and red cherry fruit, pure, fresh, and deliciously tart. We’ve known the wine for years, but the 2010 was the first to climb the heights and win Gamberro Rosso’s coveted Tre Bicchieri. The 2011 Vino Nobile from Cerro surprised us with a brighter, fresher, deeper flavor profile than the highly touted 2010 vintage, then the 2011 also won Tre Bicchieri. Two years in a row is a major achievement for any Italian producer, but it’s exceptionally rare for a wine that costs less than $20. We think this Vino Nobile will cross categories nicely and please a lot of wine drinkers. Chianti lovers will appreciate the suave red fruit and bright, savory balance, but Fattoria del Cerro’s Vino Nobile also hints at the darker depths and age-worthy structure of a powerful Brunello.

Australia's roots in Rhone grapes go back to the founding of the Barossa Valley in the 1840's and 50's. There are Shiraz/Syrah vines in Barossa that are over 150 years old alongside similar pockets of old-vine Grenache and Mourvedre. A "Chateauneuf-style" blend is a natural for Australia, but in the past, these wines were usually bottled by varietal. Yalumba has been at it longer than most (163 years!), but this is the first release for "The Strapper" blend. We had to wonder what took them so long! The pretty red fruit of the Grenache adds brightness and elegance to some powerful, spicy notes from the Mourvedre (aka, "Mataro.") This wine is serious and responds nicely to a bit of air-time, moving from brooding black fruit to high-tone pomegranate, rose petals, and kirsch. There were only about 300cs for the US market-it will go fast.

The ‘Tito’ bottling pays homage to Sebastian’s father and is comprised primarily of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is one juicy, delicious wine which is definitely a crowd pleaser!

We recently sat down with Jose Alberto Zuccardi to enjoy his wines and learn more about his family’s winery. We were thrilled as the Zuccardi’s are taking Argentine winemaking to the next level of quality and refinement by pioneering single vineyard, micro-climate wines in the Uco Valley. Looking forward, customers should begin looking for regional bottlings as well as sub-zones and single vineyard designated bottlings from Argentina as indications of quality. Jose Zucardi’s father originally planted vines in the arid Uco Valley in Mendoza, Argentina. The high altitude vineyard at the foot of the Andes was meant to showcase his irrigation system, which he hoped to sell to others in the agricultural business. Up to that point, the area had been inhospitable to most crops, but the experiment proved to be a success as the grapes flourished, producing outstanding, flavorful wines.

Jose made the wines for many years, but now the primary responsibility belongs to his son, Sebastian. Together, they have brought Argentine wines to new heights and received world-wide recognition for their efforts.

To better understand the soil composition for each plot of land, Sebastian dug numerous holes in their vineyards. This information was used to plant grape varieties in the soils best suited for them. The Zuccardi’s attention to detail extends to all areas of their winemaking with results you can taste in the glass. His passion is evident in the delicious wines he produces and he likes to say, “The identity of a wine comes from a unique combination of vines, climate, soil and people.”
