Marianne and Fons Aaldering's aspiration to produce one of South Africa's best wines began to come into fruition in 2004 when they bought a 24-hectare estate in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch. Read More...
This was the birth of Aaldering Vineyards & Wines, a company focused on delivering premium quality wines to wine lovers all around the world. Along the years a devoted team was gathered which characterizes itself as being young, professional, dynamic and international. And the wine they're making? Quite impressive! This Cab/Merlot is complex, flavorful and endearing. The nose is rife with dynamic earthy terroir, mixed plums and berries, black pepper, mint, eucalyptus, a touch of cedar and cigar box. The palate combines forward fruit, dried cherries and cranberries and kriek lambic, with earth and spice: baker's chocolate, gravel, river bed. Moderate tannins and ample acidity keep the lush viscosity buoyant and clean.

quite powerful and concentrated, with slightly rustic aromas of tree bark, spices and faint flowers intermixed with notes of dark cherries and flavors of black cherries and licorice, with abundant, fine-grained tannins. A powerful red with balance to age. Drink 2014-2018."

STEPHEN TANZER'S INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLARS 92 POINTS - "(70% Samso and 30% Garnacha): Opaque ruby color and highly aromatic scents of blackberry and blueberry liquer, licorice and a hint of lavender. Enters lush and rich on the palate, with impressive freshness, offering flavors of bitter cherry and dark berry liqueur. Finishes long and sweet, with floral note clinging tenaciously."

This is a newer discovery and we are happy to be able to bring this fabulous wine into the store! Acustic Celler is the project of Albert Jané who grew up helping tend vineyards and learning the craft of winemaking from his family. He worked there until he was 33 years old when he fell in love with the rugged landscape and ancient vineyards of Montsant, an area of north-eastern Spain which surrounds Priorat. Albert left the security of the family business to start his own adventure, Acústic Celler. He chose the winery name to reflect his desire to keep his wines, “unplugged.” In other words, to let the terroir and grapes speak for themselves. The old vines provide an amazing nectar of fruit, which is fermented using natural yeasts. Cautious use of barrel-aging helps the wines achieve maturity without hiding the character of the grapes from which they have been made. The flavors of this wine dance on the tongue and somehow manage to achieve richness and lightness at once. Bravo!

some outstanding wines. And so they set out contracting with 135 tiny vineyards with 50- to 85-year-old vines and started to make wines from the native varietals of the area. Soon, their farmhouse was turned into a winery and the demand for the wines became more than they could supply. This unique red is made from old vine Callet, Mantonegre, Fogoneu and Syrah fermented in a combination of stainless steel and concrete, aged for over just a year in a combination of French and American oak.

A unique aroma of savory spices, violets and smokiness leads to silky and intense flavors great for duck or stuffed pork chops. If you are a person that is intrigued by the less-than-obvious, this one is for you

of Domaine Des Deux Roches in the Mâconnais. Looking to expand, they focused on Languedoc where land prices were much better than in Burgundy. Antugnac quickly became the clear choice. The domaine is roughly fifty miles west of Carcassonne in a lovely, isolated mountain valley hidden in the Pyrenean foothills, anchored by the old village of Antugnac (its church was built as a kind of bastide, or fortified building, to protect the villagers from marauding bands in the middle ages). The vineyard parcels start at the village but the majority climb the heights of the south-facing flanks, growing between 280 and 530 meters above sea level in meager limestone soils.

In 2000, the partners installed David Serodes as manager of the estate. It proved to be an inspired choice—Serodes understood at once that what this location offered was Languedoc’s southern exposures tempered strongly by mountain coolness. “Aux Bons Hommes”: The translation is “to the good men,” which comes from Languedoc’s past when it was the region of the Cathars, a religious group that was known for its asceticism and good works and thus earned the moniker of the good Christians, or good men (although the Church rulers thought otherwise and finally decided to kill them all, which it did with a crusade in the 13th century; thereafter Languedoc, heretofore a progressive region of high culture and tolerance, fell into a long economic decline).

The nose on “Bons Hommes” is touched with notes of brown spices, dried plums, sea salt and tilled earth. The palate is filled with lush, ripe red fruits, berries and excellent viscousity-- upfront acidity lends structure as soft tannins round it out for balance. The finish is long and sweet with more orchard fruits, earth, spice and a light herbal tone. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah.

Moderately tannic, very forward and opulent with a ravishing, polished finish, this is a very modern, svelte Cabernet/Shiraz that is well crafted by winemaker Mary-Lou.

The wines of the small Priorat zone near Barcelona seemed to get endless press 5-10 years ago and with good reason—the vineyards were almost all rocky, steep, dangerously low-yielding, and fantastically good for quality. Now the spotlight seems to be moving to the adjacent Montsant zone which offers the same mix of old-vine Grenache and Carignan, the same slate soils, and much of the depth of Priorat—but at prices 50%-75% less than Priorat. Famed Spanish importer and vineyard hound, Jorge Ordoñez, has made a splash in the Montsant region with his newest project, Zerran. Another unbelievable value from Spain...

In the holy pantheon of Spanish red wines, the big, full-bodied wines of Priorat can contend only with Rioja and Ribera del Duero for excellence and prestige. Cabreo Il Borgo debuted in 1985 with its 1982 vintage. Just above Greve in the Chianti region, the Cabreo holdings include 50 hectares planted to Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grown to produce Il Borgo. Chianti’s famed stony soils are ideal for making wines with great aging potential. At 300 meters in elevation, the densely planted vineyards produce low yields of grapes with concentration and complexity. Fermentation at controlled temperature with extended maceration enhances the wine’s rich body, color and texture. After malolactic fermentation, the wines are blended and matured in oak barrels and spend at least six months in bottle before release. The word 'borgo' refers to a small village, Montefioralle, that overlooks the vineyards. The nose on this wine is incredibly expressive: spicy fruit, raw meat, moonlit garden, plums and passion fruit, saddle leather and sea salt are among the multitude of wonders that arose from our glasses. The palate followed up quite well, from our notes: "Beautiful. Sweet, but not overly so-- ripe fruit, good tannins, herbals, notes of pencil lead darting between hints of ripe red plums, blackberries, black pepper and underbrush. So tasty! Balance-- a fine line strongly crossed over, a high wire act between being reserved and ebullient: very assured wine."
