ROEDERER 08 BRUT BLANC DE BLANCS

We have long held that Roederer’s Blanc de Blancs is the performance sleeper of the firm’s lineup as it often rivals their flagship “Cristal” bottling at a fraction of the latter’s price. For this 100% estate bottled Chardonnay Champagne, Chef de Cave Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon combines equal parts Mesnil-sur-Oger and Avize with a dollop of Cramant fruit that gives the blend an additional touch of acidity. The early assessment of the 2008 vintage in Champagne is that it’s an outstanding year that will contend with 2002 as the best of this young century. You can imagine then how eager we were to wrap our palates around this wine. As it turns out our lofty expectations were more that exceeded. In a nutshell this is a simply thrilling, out-sized Champagne that billows with aromas of white flowers, lemon drops and baking spices. Luscious and silky on the palate, this Champagne shows remarkable depth and generosity with abundant flavors of yellow fruits infused with elements of honey, toast, sea salt and chalk. Its abundant fruit carries through the long finish lending an impression of sweetness though its dosage (8-10 g/l) is well within the Brut range. It is also worth noting that Lecaillon has fashioned this jewel with just 4 atmospheres of pressure (instead of the usual 6) which works to further enhance this Champagne’s lux feel. As a note to the wise, we should also point out that this Blanc de Blancs comprises only 5% of the Roederer’s production so it is very likely that once our small allocation is gone it will be gone for good.
