by the Cabirau 2011 Cotes du Roussillon Malgre les Functionnaires proof against any negative effects of its nearly 15% alcohol. Tar, Latakia tobacco and black pepper incisively accent this smoky, rich blend of Grenache with roughly 20% Syrah and 15% Carignan, leading to an infectiously juicy and positively mouth-shaking finish. Here is a wonderful example of the vivacity and energy that can be conveyed by ripe Roussillon fruit, not mention an exceptional value. I expect it to drink well through at least 2017."

roasted meats and licorice that flow to a full-bodied, concentrated Chateauneuf du Pape that possesses a core of sweet fruit, gorgeous texture and a heady finish that seems to go on and on. Fully mature, with completely integrated tannin, it is certainly not for the low alcohol crowd, yet offers up a thrillingly rich drinking experience. I don’t see any upside here and would enjoy bottles over the coming handful of years."

ROBERT PARKER 96 POINTS - "Two brilliant successes are Brunel’s cuvees of 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. His limited cuvee of approximately 500 cases of Read More...
the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Centenaire (made from 80% Grenache aged in foudre, and the balance Syrah and Mourvedre aged in one- to three-year-old small barrels) comes primarily from a parcel of 120-year-old vines in the northern part of the appellation in the lieu-dit known as Farguerol. This cuvee has only been made in vintages such as 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, and now 2007. Deep ruby/purple in color, the wine exhibits very up-front, precocious, sexy plum, black currant, and sweet cherry notes intermixed with some floral hints, licorice, and garrigue. It is dense, full-bodied, much more supple and silky-textured than the 2005 or 2001, but seemingly more concentrated than the 2000 version of this wine. It is a brilliant, full-throttle, seamless Chateauneuf du Pape capable of lasting for up to two decades, although few people will be able to resist its exuberant youthfulness. A moderately-sized estate for Chateauneuf du Pape (just under 44 acres), this is always a benchmark for the quality of any given vintage thanks to the energetic and very talented proprietor, Andre Brunel. He produced two of the best 2008s I tasted."

and 10% Syrah). Made from 50- to 100+-year-old vines and aged 18 months in small oak barrels, it is potentially one of the longest lived wines of the vintage. This exquisite, dense purple-colored effort reveals intense but restrained notes of cassis, kirsch, lavender, licorice, and graphite. A wine of great intensity as well as remarkable finesse and elegance, is a full-bodied Chateauneuf that will require plenty of patience. Give it 3-4 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 25-30."

and Mourvedre. Full-bodied with lots of kirsch, blackberry, raspberry, camphor and licorice, this is a classic example of both Chateauneuf du Pape and Provencal viticulture. the most complex and concentrated wines of the vintage. An extraordinary perfume of white chocolate, roasted Provencal herbs, lavender, licorice, black cherries and sweet black currants is followed by a broad, expansively flavored wine with a superb full-bodied texture, terrific purity and a 40+ second finish. In fact, the tannins are such that 1-2 years of bottle age may be beneficial. This 2008 should evolve for 15 years. It is almost impossible to believe that something like this could have been achieved in this vintage."

The southern Rhone has seen some very good vintages over the past few years. Robert Parker rates 2007 as a 98 point vintage, 2009 a 93 point and 2010 another 98 pointer. Clos Saint Jean has been one of the top performers in all of those vintages. They have been given outstanding scores for their 3 top bottling’s. Sanctum Sanctorum, Deus Ex Machina, and La Combe Des Fous have grabbed an amazing nine 99 or 100 point scores from 2007 thru 2010 combined. Unfortunately there is never enough wine to go around (only 1 case and a few mags for the entire year). When we tasted the 2008 La Combe Des Fous, there was only one thing to say “we’ll take it all!”

Lost between the 100 point 2007 and the 99 point 2009 is the absolutely stunning 2008 La Combe Des Fous. This Cuvee is made from a single plot of mostly Grenache in tank and 20% Syrah in demi-muids. This is a pure, clean, full bodied beauty. Don’t miss your chance to treat yourself to one of Chateauneuf Du Pape’s finest wines. Take one home for the upcoming holiday feast.

effort possesses more stuffing than most of its peers. It reveals this estate-s tell-tale notes of earthy garrigue, herbs, licorice and seaweed, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, soft tannins and more depth than many 2008s. whith a supple palate. It translates perfectly the flavors and scents of the garrigue, it presents a wild taste, always surprising. The other half of the vineyard is composed of Syrah and Mourdèvre which produce a very colorful wine, almost chocolate-flavored, with notes of black cherry and blackberry.
The wine presents an intense and deep dress. Nose reveals a bouquet of red berries with pepper notes. It is generous and harmonic in the palate, with elegant tannins.

it is beautifully integrated with kirsch, roasted Provencal herb, espresso and black currant aromas. This full-throttle, masculine and rich wine possesses sweet tannins as well as good integration of structure and acidity. It is built for the long haul, yet can be drunk in 2-3 years or cellared for two decades."

WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS: "This isn't shy, with flashy mocha, toasted raisin, cinnamon and pastis aromas rushing forth, but there's sleek, integrated structure and solid layers of linzer torte, plum pâte de fruit and bramble to fill it out. A tarry edge lingers on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2026. 700 cases made." –JM

VINOUSMEDIA 91+ POINTS: "Opaque purple. Ripe, smoke-accented aromas of blueberry, cassis, violet and vanilla, with a peppery topnote. Lush, deeply pitched dark fruit flavors pick up a bitter chocolate nuance in the glass, along with a hint of licorice. Dusty tannins build with air and add firm grip to a long, spicy finish. This wine possesses strong material but needs some time to stretch out." -- Josh Raynolds

about 10%) Mourvedre, the latter aged in small oak barrels. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color and a more modern style than the traditional cuvee or the 100% Grenache cuvee Cornelia Constanza reviewed below. Despite its so-called -modern leanings,- which some people deplore, this is a beauty. Dense purple, with elegant blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as hints of garrigue, vanillin and spice box, it is dense, full-bodied, yet wonderfully precise and fresh, given the vintage's liveliness and vibrancy. In light of some noticeable tannins, give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15-20+ years."

the Syrah in new oak. This wine displays loads of toasty vanillin notes in a very modern style and is my least favorite 2010. The wine is certainly very good but seems to lack some of the typicity we expect in these wines from Chateauneuf du Pape, and especially a southern French dry red wine. Nevertheless, it is well-made, medium to full-bodied and capable of 10-15 years of aging potential."
