RADIKON "S" 2010 PINOT GRIGIO

From Fruili, Italy, comes a stunning wine from the iconic winery Radikon. This is a Pinot Grigio unlike you have ever tasted with elegance and complexity. Radikon is located in Oslavia, near the Julian Alps and Adriatic Sea. Eleven hectares of vines planted on steep slopes of marbled limestone clay are biodynamically worked with as little human intervention as possible. The wine is made in “ramato” style, an ancient way of producing Pinot Grigio (which, lest we forget, is a russet-colored grape) with some skin contact, thereby giving the wine a pink hue. The grapes are picked at full ripeness, placed in barrels for over a week to ferment and macerate on its skins. The copper-tinged wine is then aged for about eighteen months in large oak barrels. The result is truly remarkable. Radikon 2010 “S” Pinot Grigio has a distinctive red berry quality, with a Burgundian-like texture. Think of this as a white wine made as a red wine, but with citrus, spice and grapefruit notes. It benefits from a good decant to really strut its stuff, but the results are profound. This is also known as an “orange wine,” and is unofficial mandatory tasting for every “Student of Wine.” It is also downright delicious, and requisite drinking for any lover of wine.
